I get a real manicure every month or two just because they do a good job shaping and a good job on my cuticles. It only costs about 15 bucks. At home I wipe my nails with rubbing alcohol before applying a base coat, color, and top coat.

I can't seem to have a mani last more than a day without chipping, so I just paint my toes now. Then I bought the gelish stuff but it just peels off after a few days. I think I'm nail challenged.

Thanks everyone. I will have to see what I can find tomorrow for polish.

Thanks for the recommendation of Seche Vite. I needed to run to Ulta for something else today and picked up a bottle. Holy dry fast!! Awesome!

After filing and buffing I wipe each nail with nail polish remover or acetone to remove any residue. That seems to help the polish last a bit longer. My sister swears by spraying Pam on her nails to help them dry quickly after polishing, although I have never tried it myself.

It's really a matter of finding the best base coat for you, and that's often trial and error. You might try a sticky basecoat like Orly Bonder. Or you might need a strengthener, or a moisturizing bc. I find my polish actually lasts just as long if I oil my nails before polishing, rather than making them as dry as possible. Let it sit, wipe off the excess, apply bc, polish, then a good quick dry top coat like Seche Vite or NYC Grand Central Station. Oiling them keeps my nails from peeling, plus I use Barielle with Argan Oil base coat (I get it at Sally's). The drier my nails are the worse the peeling and then my polish doesn't adhere as well. For me personally, I get the best wear out of Zoya creams. I also tried the new Revlon Gel Envy recently and got 8 days of wear with just two tiny, not noticeable chips before I got bored to death of the color and took it off. But Revlon bubbles on me and if you don't use base coat, as they advertise none is needed, done of the colors will stain your nails I'm going to try the newer "gel like" Sally Hansen next. These are polishes that aren't light-cured gels but use a tc that strengthens on its own, esp in sunlight (so, sort of UV cured, but a separate light isn't needed). I wonder if this is my issue with peeling nails ... do you just use a cuticle oil on your nails?

"Sticky" base coat --I get it at ulta, it's greenish tinted! My polish lasts 5-7 days when I use it!

I'm totally a Jamberry fan as well. My first application lasted 2 weeks. I just reapplied last night with white French nail tips and two accent nails. Much easier and neater to apply than polish and far less expensive and less damaging to your real nails than acrylics.

One thing that I would do is really make sure that you clean your nail bed thoroughly and make sure that cuticle is pushed back. Prep your nail bed with alcohol to make sure it is dry before applying polish. However, polish is going to chip within a day or two regardless. Also, after your mani, make sure that you are continuing to moisturize your hands daily. Use cuticle oil and hand lotion. As someone said, Jamberry nails will last longer than polish. They say you can get up to two weeks out of them, but I am hard on my nails and get about 10 days out of them. They are heat and pressure applied nail wraps. Heat with a hair dryer and smooth to the nail. They come in over 300 designs, from subtle to busy. Metallics, glitter, clear designs (that look great over top of polish), matte....you name it. If you go to www.anailrevolution.com you can see the designs. If you are in the US, ignore the pricing because it is lower than the Canadian prices that show up. Also, here are *my hands* with Jamberry nails on. Oooooh, those look so much fun Give them a shot! The sheets give you two full manis and two full pedis. The sheets are buy 3, get 1 FREE. When you sign in, your US prices should show up. Go take a look. Jamberry Nails

Just got Marc Jacobs Enamored extreme wear and am so impressed! I've been working in the warehouse recently changing some shelves out in our store and no chips. The color is fluorescent beige and it's a gorgeous neutral against my tanned skin colour.

Don't laugh, but I will swear by QVC's perfect formula polish/coat along with Sally Hanson gel polish. Lasts for weeks

I have done my own nails for years. It takes time and patience! Clean/dry nails Base coat: Nailtique 2 coats of polish: OPI Top coat: Nailtique
Daily: top coat Nailtique (it drys quickly) I put this on when I start to read the paper and by the time I'm done it's dry!
I do this about every 3 weeks. Yup! I don't have to do it earlier and I can wait another week if I have to. My polish doesn't chip, it's my nails growing out that makes me have to take it off and manicure them again.

I have yet to try an Essie color that didn't chip after less than 24 hours. Even on my toes! That brand is horrid!

I'd try the Barielle with Argan Oil bc too. Do you keep your nails polished? Mine peel if I keep them nude. Frequent contact with water and hand sanitizers are peel-makers too. Pure acetone dries my nails too much so I use a nourishing acetone-based remover. Hope that helps

Apply a thin coat of polish Top with a coat of MATTE top coat (I like Sally Hansen) Apply the second coat of your polish Top with Seche Vita or Sally Hansen fast drying top coat
My nail polish lasts a full week.
I don't know why adding in the matte top coat makes such a difference, but it does! I first tried it because In Style magazine gave it as a tip for getting non-streaky finish with pastel polishes.

Clean nails Add base coat Paint first coat Paint second coat Add seche Vite This is what I do. I use Essie polish almost exclusively. OPI doesn't stay on my nails. I can get almost a week out of a manicure if I'm not real rough with my hands. I also keep my nails fairly short, and I think that helps as well. Oh and lighter colors seem to last longer. I like dark colors especially in the Fall, but they do seem to chip/show wear faster.

Maybe they are too dry ... thanks for the tips!

I get a full week out of my mani and 2 weeks out of my pedi. I am hard on my nails.
Take off old polish. Trim, shape nails. Push cuticles back. Base coat - Gelous nail gel (no light needed). 2 coats OPI color. Gelous nail gel. Fast drying top coat.
The secret for me was the Gelous nail gel. I buy mine at Sally's. I was never able to get a full week before I started using this gel coat. It is amazing! No light is needed.
Good luck!

Seche Vite changed up my entire mani at home game. It is incredible stuff. Looks like a gel mani but without all the fuss and nail damage.
Base coat, dry. Then first coat. Let that dry a while. Really dry. Second coat and Seche Vite right after I finish with second hand. Polish needs to be tacky when it goes on.
I love Essie polishes the best.

I'd say that is why - the 'glue' that holds the layers of nail together is drying out and the layers just peel apart. Moisturise as often as you think of it - the action of massaging in some oil (actually it doesn't matter too much what it is) will also increase blood flow to the area and stimulate healthy growth.

[HASH]Ceescraps, I think yours is the best tip so far. Are you really serious??? Every 3 weeks? OMG, I would so do this.
I finally gave almost all of my nail polish away as I splurge on pedicures and just Gave. Up. on manis.
Even so, I have decent nails, so I would definitely do my own manis if this worked.
TIA....

How do you trim your cuticles w/o hurting yourself? Everytime I trim I end up needing to use first aid cream for a few days. This is a very helpful thread.

Yuppers--every 3 - 4 weeks I do my nails. I am on the computer all day long Monday - Friday and a little time on the weekends. I believe it is the Nailtique that saves my polish. It has also enabled me to have the long nails I had always wanted.
I started with Nailtique back in 2001. When I initially told my dh about it I explained the price. It is now about $18 or $19 a bottle. Even back then he said that it was cheaper than having someone else do my nails. So, he encouraged me to try it. I used it then with very light color polish and a top coat daily until my nails got long. It took about 3 months or so to get my nails to be strong, and not split, peel and grow long. Since then I swear by it. Now, when I purchase it he doesn't blink as he sees that I have to now trim my nails and the polish lasts a very long time.
Ulta has it and sometimes Target carries Nailtique. It comes in a box the size of nail polish. There are different formulas based on what you may need. I still get formula 2.

Thank you again, Ginger. I have a coupon for Ulta and will try this soon! I already searched and saw that they carried Formula 2, and there is one close to me.

I followed This faux gel tand it works great and lasts about 10 days which is perfect for me. "Schwebel’s says recalled bread poses no health risk" You caught my mistake before I did. I fixed it, just took me a few minutes due to ipad issues. I was hoping I was quick enough.
