Get the new dishwasher. We put in 2 new control panels in a less than 5 year old Samsung. Luckily (I guess) one was while under warranty. It would act up and start to error out when it was going bad and my husband said if it went out again he would get me a new one. Got a Bosch last fall.

Just bought a dishwasher last week because the one I had died last year. I just got the next to the cheapest one they had at Lowes, the one I just had that died was a more expensive one and barely lasted 2 years. the one prior to that was the 2nd cheapest one and lasted a good decade.seems I do better with the more simple versions of things than the more expensive versions LOL,we'll see how this one goes..but really they dont make anything like they used to anymore.. and this one is super duper quiet, my aunt has a kitchenaide one that is stainless on the inside, that she has had for for a few years and it has always sounded like an airplane taking off in her kitchen.
btw my 16yr old hooked up my new one, granted he's a terribly gifted kid when it comes to fixing things and doing stuff like that-we live on a dairy farm,he has also changed out starters and stuff on dump trucks and tractors and all sorts of other machinery work, so a dishwasher was small change to him.but Im thinking it may not be that difficult if you had a dishwasher prior, maybe someone you know would be able to install it for you instead of paying someone.

At 5 years old I wouldn't put another $300 into it. +1 More and more of my friends are having the control panel go out. I'd vote for replacing it.

If you have a dishwasher that's broken and just sitting there you now have a nice drying rack for all of the dishes you'll wash my hand. I'd get a new one. Something else will break on that one.

I know Goobernut2 mentioned Sears - be aware they (and their service plans) are not what they used to be. Sales people are on commission and their extended warranty plans are expensive. Worse their service department has really fallen apart. I know the old 2peas had discussions about them before. It's so sad to see what bad management has done to Sears.
We paid $79 for a 4 year extended warranty at Home Depot on our fridge. Our freezer is from Lowe's. Both places had free delivery/free pick up of old appliance and non-commission sales people.

The electric company fried the motherboard to my oven while they were installing a new meter. The cost to repair - $350. The amount I paid for the stove brand new, 2 years ago - $780 (including tax). I am currently waiting to see if the electric company will be reimbursing me without a fight. For a 5 year old dishwasher, if you can afford it, I would replace in a heartbeat.

New one, but I'd take it home and install it myself and save those fees. Is that an option?
Also, once you figure out where you will buy it from, go buy the gift cards for that store from a grocery store with gas and get the cents off (if you have those there)

I would look up the part online and see how much it is. It is literally a matter of unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one. The most intensive labour is unscrewing the front panel of the dishwasher (about 4 or 6 screws) and then screwing it back on).

Our 14 year old dishwasher died last year and I thought we could go without for awhile. About day 4 I was price shopping at Sears and Lowe's. Apparently I am the only one who could see the dirty dishes piling up-we are a fully capable dishwashing family of 4. Anyway, got a return from sears, the salesman was surprised that our previous one had lasted 14 years! DH is so NOT handy so unfortunately I had to pay extra to have it installed. I would not be putting $300 in to a 5 yr old dishwasher. Appliances just don't last like they use to.

I am going to suggest a new one. Our dishwasher was six years old when it fought out kitchen cabinets on fire. Yep if you are having issues. Buy a new one!

My Maytag's control panel has burned out twice. I've repaired it both times, but I am enraged that I had to do so. In your situation, I'd get a new dishwasher (NOT a Maytag) and call it good.

In my experience, if I get 5 years out of a dishwasher I'm doing well. We run ours twice a day, so it seems to wear out twice as fast, and the days of a dishwasher lasting 15 years seem to be long gone. Personally, I'd spring for a new dishwasher.

We just put $300 into ours and it is really frustrating. It is only 2 1/2 years old.

They're definitely not built to last anymore, I'd just get a new one.

Peasful1, we are totally not handy over here but on your advice I googled how to repair this & sure enough, it seemed really easy! I found a repair parts company that offers a 1 year no hassle return on parts & we managed to take the panel out. I'm shocked & feeling more than a little proud! Of course, it's not fixed yet - we wanted to see if we could even get it apart first - but this feels like a really good first step! So, thank you!

It's funny how people have such different experiences. I have a friend that bought a KithenAid dishwasher that died at right at a year. Our old JennAir dishwasher was at least 12 years old when it gave out. We replaced it with a Maytag, so far it's been great.

OH - there are two parts that could be bad. After looking at the parts, we think it's the touch panel instead of the control panel. Each part is about $150. As I mentioned, we can buy a part & return it if it's not the right part or we can't get it to work.
We're really happy with this dishwasher & I'd be very happy if we could fix it for $150.

It's very empowering to fix something yourself. Usually much cheaper than replacing or getting someone else to repair. Labour cost is the bulk of most services.

I would probably get a new one. If you can wait a little while I bet they will have Labor Day Sales at several stores.
I got a new washer about a year ago and already had to have a repairman come out. He told me that washers only last about 8 years. I was like, "EXCUSE ME??" I can't believe how crappy made things are anymore! (now I sound like my mother!!)

Keep us posted on how it works out. I think our Maytag's control panel is going/gone out as well and ours is only 15 months old It runs for now, but it runs continually on normal cycle only, as soon as it goes thru the dry cycle it restarts with a normal wash again. As soon as the door is closed it runs so I have to be there during the dry cycle to open the door Not looking forward to buying a new one or paying $300 to fix it
