Such cool names. I haven't done much family research yet as all my ggparents came from Poland/Prussia so there's not anything more in the US to research. My favorite uncle was named Rufus. Love that name now.

But mostly, due to a huge portion of my family tree is Italian or Irish, I have 112,700 relatives named Mary or Maria. And they're all close cousins, no doubt. ![](http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/r481/2peasrefugees/Smilies/roflmao.gif) Of course! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Because Mary or Maria was the grandmother, who had a dozen kids of her own, then 8 her dozen kids named one of their kids Mary or Maria. And in a few families they actually went as far as to name one kid Mary and her sibling Maria! It's a nightmare! Trying to find them in the old papers is especially a treat. You find 12 articles about Francis Flannery and you have no idea which of the 20 Francis Flannerys they are talking about most of the time, and the only things they may say to identify them are "Son of John" or "of Connor Street". But 50% of them have fathers named John and 75% of them live on Connors Street! Ugh! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I have Sephoria and a Nimrod as well! I also have a Murzy, Melquiades, Mordecai And then there's the Knight, Duke and Doctor. I love the different ones, unfortunately huge chunks of my family couldn't think beyond Joseph, Patrick, Bridget and Mary or Maria and Jose - well in fairness to the latter, they all had different middle names that they actually used but some census records are utterly impossible to use as there are 150 pages of Maria and Jose as they only used their first "real" name which was actually only used at baptism. I know what you mean. I 've got a lot of German names that all "start" with their baptismal name of Johannes, Anna or Maria. It makes it really confusing when someone's real name is Johannes, Anna or Maria and they are in a German family. I have a line like that. Johan Michael, Johan Jacob, Johan George, etc. And Anna Elizabeth, Anna Catharina, Anna Margaretha, etc.

Eh I'm boring all I've got is Edwina and Buck
Everyone else has very traditional names right down to the countless Irish Catholic Marys all differentiated by their middle names. Generations of Marys

In my family tree I've seen several men named Ransom, and Reason. The worst ever showed up the other day - Orange Peel. Huh? That CAN'T be right!
DH is hispanic - loads of names like Severanio, Primitivo, Ninfa, Faustino, Apolonio, Policarpio, Olivama.

Also a great great grandfather named Garnet, like the stone.
My grandfather's middle name was Lapsley. He was named for a circuit riding preacher.

Mine are all pretty boring. I did notice that, since a lot of records I saw were handwritten, some names were written incorrectly when people typed them up--eg, there is an Amy misread as Anna, so a lot of her records say Anna.

my grandfather choose the middle name of Elmer... my mother's family is all welsh...and it is the same twenty names over and over and over.. and lots of double names..like thomas thomas. Same here. Then there's the nicknames; big red, little Tom, big Tom... BUT there's also other family names because I come from Mormon pioneers. It would be easier to find a name people didn't think was unusual.

There is a woman named Daughter way back in my father's family tree. At first I just thought it was a note for a known female child with an unknown name. But then found church records that listed a marriage and sure enough it was Daughter Last Name married whoever. Kind of seems sad that it appears she never really got a name. From what I can find looks like a large family where the 2 children immediately before her didn't survive infancy. Wonder if they didn't expect her to survive either.

My great great grandfather was named Littleberry. Oddly enough there are several more Littleberrys in our family line. Why would you pass that name on??
My great grandfather was Napoleon.
My Grandfather was Oakley Homer- that got slaughtered in the census records, most of which list him as Oklahoma.
I also have : Charmie- female Jeter - male Qube- female Precious-female
My cousins and I have the most common names ever! Debbie, Rhonda, Linda, Sheila, Shirley, Jeff, David, Kim, etc... I wonder if 100 years from now someone is going to go Wow what odd names!!

My sentimental favorite is Thankfull (two Ls). I have a 7th Great Granmother that was Thankful (one L) born in the early 1700s in the US. Some things don't change I guess, it sounds more like something someone would use now.

One of our families on the German side had 13 kids. The daughters all had Maria as their first names. I think there were 7 of them.

rainangel: Ahasverus (or, more commonly, Ahasuerus) was the King of Persia to whom Queen Esther was married. You can look up the story of the Purim holiday for more info. The most unusual name I've seen is in DH's family: Euclydus. I've found many relatives with different versions (or misspellings) of the name: Euclid, Euclidas, Euclides, Euclidus, Eucledus, Euclydus, Ecledus, Euclaides, Eucloidas, Eucloides, Eucloridas, Euclideus, Euclodes, Eueltus, Uclides, Uclidus, Yuclydus, Hughclidus, Clidus, Clyde, and Ulisis. These ancestors were Quakers in the Philadelphia area, but I know that some relatives with the name migrated to South Carolina.

I've also uncovered (all these are from my dad's line): I have a Millard Fillmore Lastname. I guess that kind of tells you when he was born! He gave his son the same name. Being Armenian on both sides, it's a wonder I have a normal name.
My paternal grandparents were Garabed (M) and Kayane (F), naming sons Berj and Sooren. How my dad was named John is beyond me. He also had a brother Jack and sister Dorothy. So he wasn't the only one with an "American" name. Strangely, it was the two youngest who had the Armenian names.
My maternal grandparents were Levon (M) and Meline (F). Extended family members were Araxie (F), Anoush (F), Armen (M) and Vartan (M).
This week my brother hosted cousins visiting from Argentina. Here is what he posted on Facebook today:
"A mother and her children escaping genocide. Her husband had been shot in the streets. Two of her children die in the wilderness. She ends up in Philadelphia with one daughter. Her other daughter ends up in Argentina, unable to emigrate to the US. Her great, great grandchildren finally meet."
The woman referred to in the first sentence was our great grandmother. The old lady in black in My Big Fat Greek Wedding reminds me of the one picture I've seen of her. It wasn't until our cousin's last visit (father to of the girls who came this time) that he realized she had survived and made it to the states.

I was getting so frustrated with my English/Irish/Scottish family - so many repeated names, so many children named the same thing as an older sibling who died. One line was all Annas. There were way too many Marys, Johns, Georges, Margarets, Williams, Jameses, Thomases, etc. I was getting so annoyed.
And then I found him... Epaphroditus!
It's a name that shows up once in the Bible and relates to Aphrodite and means something like handsome. But I was just happy for a completely different name! He named his son James, btw.

I have a great aunt Drucilla and the kids all called her Aunt Drudie.
Beyond that, I have no idea as I haven't done any of the research. Both of my grandmothers were in the DAR, so I know the family trees have been done at least to that point, but I don't have any of that information.
