I think they did then her friend was in that really bad accident. Right and her mother tried to keep them apart.... I just thought it was resolved last season.. I was having a bit of deja vu..maybe it was just finally put to rest this episode. It bothered me she even came back, but at the end it sounded like she would be staying with the rest of the midwives. I hope they don't get caught. It's still the early 60's.

Did anyone catch the comment at the end, as the parents were looking at the baby in the stroller? How her deformity would cause a scandal or something like that? Earlier in the thread someone mentioned thalidomide; I assume that's what they were referring to?

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned thalidomide; I assume that's what they were referring to? Yes. They provided the context and cause. Thalidomide. Lots more babies would be born with effects before it was figured out. In an episode last season, they started giving it to women for severe morning sickness. It was a miracle drug until the link was made.

I like how this show can make you cry without being too melodramatic.

i don't know if anyone saw this but just now on call the midwife's fb page they announced chummy will be back briefly in the christmas special and will be back next season I just saw that same page and was heading here to post, since Chummy is such a favorite. Great minds! Here is the entirety of what was shared: Hello all!! This morning we are delighted to tell you that our beloved Miranda Hart will be returning to Nonnatus House as the brilliant Chummy Noakes!! We’ve been bursting to share the news that Chummy has now left the Mother and Baby Home and is heading back to Poplar for season 6! We’re thrilled to be once again featuring Miranda Hart and her fabulous blend of warmth, strength and vulnerability, as Chummy gets to grips with the medical and social challenges of the 1960’s. Restored to Nonnatus House, Chummy will relish being back in bustling world of the East End. Miranda appears only briefly in our forthcoming Christmas Special, but returns to centre stage in Season 6 Episode One, when Chummy is called upon to support a local mum in a challenging situation. She will appear frequently throughout the new series. Call the Midwife Christmas Special will air in the 2016 holiday season across the world, followed by season 6 early in 2017 :-)

It was a miracle drug until the link was made. I know I was asked if my mother took Thalidomide while pregnant with me when I had my own prenatal appointments. I think they were tracking the possibility of second generation affects.

I took Thalidomide with my oldest. Fortunately, my morning sickness was so bad that nothing stayed down. Not even the water I drank to take the meds. So, it came back up as fast as it went down. Thank goodness.
