A Facebook friend posted a unicorn on Saturday and asked if anyone who crochets would make two of them for her. I have 2 heads, two necks, two bodies and four legs made. I ordered safety eyes and gold metallic cotton for the horns. I hope to finish them before the weekend. They're definitely a labor of love.

I have to say thank you for the pea recommendation on the Addi crochet hooks. I bought one and I love it so much I just ordered a second one. Anyone who hasn't tried them really should. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk What sizes of the Addi hooks do you have, jeremysgirl? I bought one awhile ago to try, and it just isn't comfortable for me. I'd be happy to send you the hook I have -- I think it's 5.5mm.

Those who are working on temperature blankets, would you mind sharing how big you're making them, and how many colours you're using? I'm just starting to think about choosing and ordering yarn...

Those who are working on temperature blankets, would you mind sharing how big you're making them, and how many colours you're using? I'm just starting to think about choosing and ordering yarn... I am using 7 colors. I choose temperatures in 10 degree ranges. I am doing a single crochet stitch and I plan to end mine at the end of July. I figure it will be a nice size for a throw and when I last measured, I realized if I went all year, it would be very, very long. I am using my stash of Vanna's Choice yarn.

Those who are working on temperature blankets, would you mind sharing how big you're making them, and how many colours you're using? I'm just starting to think about choosing and ordering yarn... I think partly the # ofcolors may depend on what your temp range is. I'm in northern Indiana, and under a good (or bad ) year lol, we can conceivably go from -0 to 100*F. ok, 100 is a stretch, but mid 90's is very normal. We've had such a weird spring here that I'm not taking any bets on our summer weather. No idea what kind of weather ranges you have over there. Some that I've seen are very small ranges.
Anyway, I chose to go with High temps in 5* increments starting at 10* and up. When I started mine the 1st of march we had not had any days that the high was lower than 10*, so I used that as my start. I do have a color picked for 0-9, and theres a slight chance i'll get to use it for December, but that's doubtful. My ranges go10-14, 15-19, 20-24 etc.... I've seen some that go like 34-44, but that range just didn't make sense to me. I'm doing a rainbow type effect, which really as I look at it, reminds of a weather map. My darkest color was a deep purple for 0-9, a med and lighter shade of purple for 10-14 and 15-19, a deep blue and a baby blue for the 20s, dark teal and a turquoise for 30s - because these colors were all cold/snowy type colors to me. I've got 4 shades of green for the 40s and 50s - and then 60s starts a pale yellow. So far I've got 3 shades of yellow and then i'll go into orange. I may have 2 oranges? I can't say for sure. (it hasn't gotten that warm here yet). And then i'll go a couple shades of red, and probably throw in a hot pink or something for 90*+ temps. Still working those colors out in my head.
So there are a ton of colors, and I just bought one skein of each to start out. Of course I didn't have to order them, and its fairly easy to just run to Michaels and pick up what I need lol. I'm using a mixture of Vanna's yarn and the M's brand, impeccable or something. They're a very similar sizing and work well together for me. Mixing the 2 also helped me to get such a wide color range.
I'm using a repeat I stole off of someone else on facebook. It had a nice look to it, and I've been happy with how mine is looking. 4 rows sc, 2 rows hdc, 4 rows moss stich, 2 rows sc, and 2 rows with 2 hdc in first stitch, skip a stitch. I chained 200 to start and am using a H size hook. It's fairly wide - more than enough to cover my queen size bed. It may be a monster when I'm done, but I think it will be a great cuddle on the couch blanket.

Thank for posting your gorgeousness! I had to go check out that CAL and ended up spending an hour last night putting together a kit in Stylecraft Special DK that matches the Scheepjes Rainbow kit as closely as I could -because I can't spend $200 on a blanket. I will start that when I finish at least one of the three blankets that are in progress right now.LOL! i do love the intricate work and that I'll learn some new stitches with that one. Your week 1 is beautiful! Yea I bit on that one, too. But since I just bought the lily pond yarn, I couldn't justify another purchase so between my friend & I we were able to come up with enough "close-enough" super saver to get away with it. We were going out of town for the weekend so stopped at her house on the way and I had half a yarn store in my lap trying to figure out colors. My van looks like a yarn shop threw up in it lol.
THEN I read the instructions for week 1. I'm still going to try it, but am awfully glad I didn't spend any money.
You have to watch the videos! It makes it so easy to follow along!!! Mandala madness video instructions

It'll probably take me ages to make a final on colours, then I have to try figure out approximate quantities to order, and I have to allow for postage time.

And secondly now that you've started and are seeing more crochet posts etc...by the time you finish this blanket, there might be something you want to make more. Since joining that CCC Facebook group that spitfiregirl posted a few pages back, I see something I want to make every day and have to talk myself off the ledge! I'm saving lots of pages and patterns though, but I'm not letting myself buy more yarn until I'm ready to start making the next thing. I did learn something from the whole scrapbooking "product collection" fiasco!

Oh dear pjaye, what is the CCC Facebook group It's a world wide group where people post what crochet projects they are working on. The name of it is in this thread a few pages back posted by spitfiregirl, put the name into the search of FB and the group will come up. It's a closed group, so you'll have to join before you can see the posts.

I did buy two balls of cotton recently because I want to try it and see if I like working with it before committing to a whole project. I like the look of it when others use it...but I'll have to see if it works for me. I might give the mandala madness a try with my left over granny square yarn, I agree, it will be good practice and I also like the idea of learning some new stitches & techniques. I just have no idea what to do with it at the end, so I don't want to buy more yarn to do it.
And I was also just looking at those star blankets! This is the one I saved for future reference:
As I'm currently doing the ripple blanket, this pattern should be easy enough.

I love star blankets, I have two that I made last year. The pattern is really simple once you get in to the rhythm and it grows very quickly.

I love the star blankets. I made one a long time ago for my niece. They work up pretty easily. I am not an advanced crocheter and I was easily able to do this one. That pink to black one is stunning.

The colors aren't meshing for me. mine is about 20 inches.. i am using worsted weight and i just finished part 3. i think its going to be HUGE, but i can stop at any round i want. Its weird thinking about colors, because the blanket is a mystery. Theres no picture of the finished blanket. I was really hesitant about my colors at week one, but they've grown on me. Try not to worry too much about colors. By round 3 you may end up loving it!

if you make it to the end of the mandala madness, its over 5000 yards! So, you need more yarn ! lol. Cotton is tricky because it runs the gamut of niceness. Sugar and cream is dishcloth cotton, which is like a paper sack material . lol. Mercerized cotton, cotton acrylic mix, cotton and wool mix, and cotton and tencel microfiber mix... some is more splitty than others... I may order some cotton 8 by sheepjes

Those who are working on temperature blankets, would you mind sharing how big you're making them, and how many colours you're using? I'm just starting to think about choosing and ordering yarn... I am using 6 colors. Temps over 94 - Red 85 - 93 Orange 76 - 84 Yellow 67 - 75 Green 58 - 66 Blue Less than 57 Purple My foundation row is approx. 400 stitches long. I used the chainless half double crochet foundation row. I kept going until it was wide enough to be the width I wanted for my CA king bed. The blanket after the foundation row is a linen stitch. It goes really quickly but it is my bedroom project so I only work on it on the rare occasions I go upstairs before bedtime.
