Week 5 came out for the Mandala Madness CAL and I'd love to see anyone's progress. Well, mine has been frogged back to about 2/3 of week 1 and is now a not-quite-as-ugly hot pad waiting to go to the church.

I just finished this set last night. It's for an old high school friend to gift as he's just become a great uncle.

I just joined a "knit along" on Ravelry. I've never done one before. This was the first clue. I'm looking forward to start the second clue as there are some lace stitches in it.

Your placement of the colors is perfect. I've been following quite a few on the facebook page and elsewhere and it is amazing how different this can look depending on the colors you use. Some I really liked their first few weeks progress but then they worked in a few colors that my eye didn't really like. Yours definitely looks the most balanced and pleasing to my eye.
Thanks for sharing.

I love the mandala afghan and would like to make one. I have watched all the videos and would like to do the different combinations of stitches.
Do do you know what size it will be when completed and the yardage of yarn that will be needed? I love all the colors but I would probably do it in monochromatic colors. I have a huge stash of yarn but, of course, not what I need. I have been "enabled" once again.

I was wondering how do some of you block your work? Foam pads? Ironing board? I want to do more scarves with patterns that require blocking to truly show it off but I don't really have a surface to lay things flat on and pin in place.

I googled to see how they did it today and it hasn't changed much. You measure out the size of square. We make a wood frame and line it with pegs and then put the granny squares over those pegs.

that works for squares, but not so much for scarves that are 5 feet long... I've seen these blocking pins for sale but I guess I'm drawing a blank on what they pinned it to/in.

I blocked a large shawl by pinning it to towels laid on the floor, it wasn't a great method but it was the only way at hand at the time. A lot of people use the childrens foam blocks.

I use foam pads and blocking wires for shawls and scarves. For smaller things like blocks, I just pin it out on the foam rubber blocks.

I use foam pads and straight pins similar to THISIf I have a long piece, like a scarf, I will just block one section at a time

Here is Frida's Flowers so far. I not only did the second block this week, but then redid all of block 1s because I wanted the tension to better match my tension on block 2 which gave me the measurements called for. So, now I've redone bock 1 about a billion times. I'm trying to promise myself no more re-crocheting it.

I'm drawing a blank on what they pinned it to/in. In a couple of crocheting facebook groups now and what I see a lot of for blocking are those foam floor puzzle mats with the alphabet letters that look like this:
I haven't needed to block anything large yet (I did all my granny squares when they were small, so didn't block the whole finished blanket) but I think these are readily available at most toy shops and not too expensive. I think people like these because you can make it up to the size you need easily.

I just crocheted my first ever beanie:
I made this for a lady who breeds Russian Blue cats (hence the colour and the cat ears), she has a male cat who was in the same litter as my Angelique and he is one of her stud males. In the last few weeks she has been diagnosed with cancer and from what she posts on Facebook and my own medical knowledge it's pretty bad and it seems highly unlikely that she will have any long term survival as it has already spread significantly. She's in her late 40s. She just posted about losing her hair and shaving the rest of it off, so I thought it might combine something practical and a little fun and make her a Russian Blue cat beanie. I deliberately made it a bit longer as she said she hates having cold ears, so this way she can cover her ears, or fold it up if she wants.
What do you think? I'm second guessing myself a bit....although I do think that even if she doesn't actually wear it, she would still appreciate that I'm thinking about her. She lives right on the other side of the country, 4hrs on a plane, so I can't do anything on a more practical/daily basis for her.

pjaye, I agree with elaine. It's a lovely, thoughtful idea and I'm sure your friend will appreciate it. I go with the school of thought that you can rarely go wrong with being kind.

Thanks Elaine, Wellway & Lainey, I'll post it off to her tomorrow. I just had a moment where I felt like it might be a bit too cheesy.
I'm sure she will appreciate the thought behind it, it just feels like such a small gesture in the face if such a big diagnosis.
On a lighter note, making a beanie was so easy and it worked up so fast, I'm almost tempted to become a beanie wearer myself.
