I have several savings goals. Medium to long term is retirement. Then there are 2 reno projects - updating kitchen and 1 bathroom - that's in the medium term. Short term goal is spending money for UK/Europe trip at Christmas.

We're saving for a couple of things atm. A deposit on a house, we've always rented but the rent situation in Ireland is getting completely ridiculous so we're going to buy (oh my god I'm a grown up ) The other thing is a holiday to San Francisco

We have cut back on eating out as well, not only to save money but also calories. I find it more difficult to lose weight when we eat out frequently. Right now I am building up my travel fund for a big trip next March to celebrate my 60th. The plan is to go to Cape Town and hopefully add in Botswana and Namibia. In addition to cutting back on eating out, I am going through the house and doing a big purge. Anything that is worth anything is being listed on eBay and the money from sales added to the travel fund. Travel fund here too. We cancelled a huge trip last year; unfortunately most of that fund got swallowed up by a UK relative's ongoing housing problem. We hope to get that back, eventually... Namibia floats my boat- if you are still considering options please Google Wolwedans Private Camp. Hands down one of the most special places on the face of the earth. My sleeping husband had his rear end (in a hammock) nosed by a curious, totally unafraid Oryx while I leopard-crawled across the floor to get the shot. Absolute magic.

do you have anything fun that you are saving your money for? I'm saving towards a downpayment to buy a house someday. I also don't eat out almost ever.

This is my area of expertise!!
Every February (the shortest month and a great time to recoup financially and health-wise from Christmas indulgence), our family does a no eating out challenge. Nothing, nada, zilch - like I'm talking not even a soda from a vending machine. Back when the kids were little, we had an incentive for them like a new toy at the end of the month if there was no complaining. :-) They are older now, and there's no reward, but they can also spend their own savings/allowance to "break" the challenge. They generally choose not too.
This past February, I also tried to "spring clean" the pantry and get really creative with meals. We saved $725 in one month using both methods. WOW!
I have since decided that the February challenge kind of kicks my ass a bit - especially during a gloomy time of year. SO, the new plan is we do the challenge one week per month Friday to Friday. We will actually be saving more money over the long term, but it won't be so hard on me.
Is there a way to IM through the board - I don't want to share it here because it links to my full name, but I have a board on pinterest of all the recipes I've made and my family loves. I have 231 currently, and they are all tried and true winners. Would love to share with you!
As for us, our long-term goal is building a log home on a nice piece of property. We plan to buy the land in 5 years and go from there.
Good luck!!

jassy.. you can send a private message by using the Messages Button at the top. One thing I do when trying to avoid eating out... to save money and calories is to buy "treats" from trader joe's. If I want to go out for a curry... I get Trader Joe's indian food, pizza same... The other thing is I use Blue Apron. $10 a person a meal. Much cheaper than eating out... good food easy to prepare. I'm saving for a house... and to take my daughter to Paris.

We've drastically reduced our eating out. I always keep some quick meal options in the freezer for emergency meals that take the place of pizza or takeout. I also plan leftovers and in general cook smaller portions because we used to waste a lot of food.

Otifications, etc.) and type I the user name and send the link to the board that way-I would love to see it. I understand about having your name out there. friends of ours have a log cabin in Front Royal, VA. It is really beautiful up there-good luck!

@yubon...thank you! I love that y'all do this because I see so many learning moments in this for kids - ie, dreaming and planning and working to make those goals are just as important as buying food and keeping the lights on, KWIM? What a great gift to him that he will remember always!

I grew up in Bowie, and my parents still live there. My grandmother owned a condo on 133rd st. so our family went for a week every summer. They rented it out, so we didn't get to go more often. It was so much fun! I grew up in University Park (near UMD) but went to Roosevelt for high school. It was a magnet school so many of my friends lived in Bowie. We live in Severna Park now, so really just 15 minutes to the Bay bridge I would love to be able to get a place at the beach. I would love to be in Bethany but until the kids are out of college, that isn't going to happen! I'm in Rockville and I would love to meet any and all peas in the DC area!!!!

I'm not sure what would be better - the shot you got, or a video of you leopard-crawling across the floor! That's even better than the time the leopard walked within a foot of my side of the Landcruiser! Best Easter Sunday of my life! I so miss Africa and really need a trip back. We are just starting the planning, so I will be checking out Wolwedans. I'm open to suggestions for both Cape Town and Botswana as well!

We are trying to save money because my husband's bonus was much less than usual and our tax return was almost nothing. I haven't had a real job in 20 years or so. We are in a bad enough situation for me to have to have a job but still need to watch our spending.

We mostly eat at home but we've always been more likely to eat at home than go out. When we want to cut expenses we do cut down on eating out. Lately it's a crapshoot whether I'll feel like eating anything at all so the family has a lot of 'fend for yourself' nights where they make omelets, sandwiches, quesadillas, or something else easy and cheap. Eggs are a big staple here because we have seven laying hens and we always have an excess of eggs. I think there are eight dozen eggs in my fridge right now. And when the garden gets going, there will be a lot we can eat out of there. We're already drowning in asparagus and later this summer I have a feeling there will be a lot of eggs+veg meals which will be homegrown and (nearly) free. We were saving up to remodel the kitchen which is dated but has a pretty good layout. We wouldn't need to rip the whole thing out and start over but we do want to reface the cabinets, get new countertops and backsplash, move the dishwasher, and update some appliances, and get new flooring. But then I got sick and our kitchen fund paid for cancer instead. We are stuck with our 1980's Olive Garden-looking kitchen for the foreseeable future but there are worse things. We did manage to save up enough to cover our upcoming trip to NYC (a bucket list item for me) and at the moment it feels much more important to make good memories with the family that it does to fix up my house or buy something or eat out. Should I croak, my kids are not going to remember that we had awesome flooring in the kitchen but they will remember seeing Hamilton on Broadway with their mother. So.
