Because now you the only other person who has watched it-did you like the first half or second half better? I thought the first fifteen minutes were excellent, then it dragged a little (for me), but the last 25 minutes--there's my story! I had no idea how the story would be told so I have to admit that as much as I enjoyed the first half, the thought "is this a Jamie'less show?", kept rolling in my head. And it was not until that beautiful transition that I could sit back and enjoy. But then when I watched it for a second time, I was so caught up in the scenes between Frank and Claire-they were so intense, so well done. Tobias literally had tears dripping onto Claire, my goodness that was not the direction I was expecting, but such a great moment for the adaptation. Sam Heughan was on Live! with Kelly and Michael. Be still my heart-I think every person in that audience camped out for a week to be there.

I need to watch it again. I spent the first half so confused, I was screaming in my head but, but, what about Faith? She had Faith before she went back, where was the war that happened before she went back....Then when they did the hand off I was all happy. And like someone posted I was able to relax. Andrea

so-it's a tie.

Just watched it and I thought they handled it perfectly! My husband was as confused as I was the first time I read DIA. I pulled up Diiana Gabaldon's website and read him what she says about DIA,
"DRAGONFLY IN AMBER (novel)—It doesn’t start where you think it’s going to. And it doesn’t end how you think it’s going to, either. Just keep reading; it’ll be fine. (1968/1744-46)."

Edited to add:
I loved seeing wee Roger!

Tobias Menzies is an amazing actor. The subtle nuances of behavior between Frank and Jack are amazing to watch. He is able to separate them and it comes across so well on the screen. I love how they transitioned between past and present also. Very well done in my opinion although I didn't get to see enough of the hotness that is Jamie Fraser.

My husband was sooooo confused by the opening. He kept talking through it, and I finally told him I'd explain at the end.
He couldn't understand why I was crying, either. That's one disadvantage for the non-readers in the crowd -- when I first read DIA I certainly didn't have that reaction. I just thought it was Gabaldon's way of writing since it was the last book. (It was before the internet, OK?)

(It was before the internet, OK?) My husband wouldn't shut up either. I almost told him to leave the room because he was making me crazy and then he wanted me to explain the entire plot line from the book. Um dude, the book is ginormous so just no. Watch the show and hush!

I haven't read any of the follow-ups to Outlander so I am really confused about what was going on last night with the time-travel. Can someone please do a hidden spoiler and tell me how Claire went from a ship sailing to France last season, to waking up at Craigh na dun still pregnant but not showing to then being in France still pregnant but not showing?

My Dh always asked a million questions too. That's why I always watch it a couple times before him and then tell him no talking, I won't answer any questions during the show. But he was dying the first half of the show. He was super confused.
The only thing that I didn't have an answer to is about the ring. Anybody have an answer/theory about the ring. I've read Voyager and beyond and know about the gem stones and time travel, but didn't think they came into play until later.

peano, the opening scene was from the future. The scenes from France are what happens before she gets back to Craigh na dun. Hope that makes sense. Just keep watching and it will fall into place.

This. The answer about the pregnancy is actually pretty simple too. Havent watched yet, but it sounds like the season opener left as many confused as the beginning of DIA did for me. I swear I thought I had somehow skipped a book when I first read it .

My husband was confused too but I gave him the synopsis that you would read on the book's inside jacket cover. I really enjoy how the writers stay true to the story in some ways and then make creative decisions on others. It's been a couple of years since I read Dragonfly in Amber so I can't recall every fine detail.
SPOILER...in case you haven't watched...
I gasped when Claire tried to take off her wedding ring from Jamie. I didn't remember that but read in an article that was something Ronald Moore wrote in.
I do love this series and it makes me happy that my husband enjoys watching it too....except for last season's last 2 episodes. LOL!

I listened to the Scot and Sassenach podcast and they had a great theory about the third ring. Putting it in spoilers though` The third ring is a ruby ring that has been seen in promos on Jamies hand. Because the ring was found apart from Claire she must not have been wearing it. So they suspect when, at the very end of the season, we see what leads to their separation,Jamie gives Claire the ring as she is being taken through the stones. And I think that answers that question for me.

I don't recall if this was part of the 2nd book. Are you saying this was added?

They said there will be significance to the ring, but because it was added, it's all speculation.

It's been awhile since I read "Dragonfly in Amber", well last year-but with my memory problems I was really confused with the first 30 minutes of the show last night. I kept trying to figure out what was going on in sequence of the story. Once it got back to the part that she was back with Jamie, about 15 minutes into it I put it all back in place. Oh yeah...I get it, I told myself. Although those 30 minutes before I was going nuts, thinking, "but what about... and this isn't supposed to be happening now".
When Claire was taking off Jamie's wedding ring I actually yelled at the TV saying, "Don't take off his ring!" because I didn't want that to happen, and I remembered all through the books how she'd look down at her hands and see both rings on them. I really wish they hadn't added that part. Yes, it showed that Frank was being generous and accepting, but personally I don't think it was necessary.
Other than that-I absolutely adored this episode! I think they did an amazing job with it and it far exceeded my expectations. I am so happy Outlander is back on TV! Yippee, oh how I have missed it! I've been watching the old episodes at night trying to re familiarize myself with them-I should have done this a month ago. Yes, I read all of the books, but like I said, I have memory problems due to some medical treatments I had a few years ago. I should read the books again, and I intend to, would love to and will but not right now.
Debbie in MD.

I LOVED IT, I loved this book and the story it told. I was crying watching Frank come to terms with all of it. Husband smiled watching me watch it, he said I love watching you enjoy it more than watching it. I have two favorite parts...when Frank gives his conditions (he was blunt but it was done with care) and how they transitioned back to Jamie. This season will be interesting.

Admittedly I am only a little more than halfway through book two, but I watched the episode anyway. She's more pregnant in the book than in the beginning of the episode? Right where I'm reading she's five months along, but when she put on her coat in the episode she wasn't showing at all.

I know he was up against a lot of other actors, but I think he should have won an Emmy last year. Would definitely watch anything else he performs in, in future. He's fascinating to me, and so versatile in his roles all of which he does well, like Alan Rickman did.

I want THOSE characters! But it's acceptable the way that it is. I just paused the show a few times to answer my husband's questions. And a few times I told him to wait and see.

Well, as I told my husband to appease his curiosity -- the book does open in the future, but not that point. It's 1968 and she's finally free of her promise, so she's telling the story to someone else. Frank's conditions, the reasons they fled to Boston are all in there, but not something you experience ... just something you learn from Claire's telling the story to her daughter.
I guess it was too good on the drama side for Ron Moore to pass up that scene, though.

I was just NOT liking Claire during the whole first half. I thought she was really insensitive to Frank. I love the books, the story, really do enjoy the show, but I'm just not Claire's biggest fan. I wish Jenny was a bigger character!

My3freaks, a friend watched it with me tonight and she said Catriona is playing Clair as a bitchier character than the one she read in the books. Sounds like the two of you would have a lot in common!
Because it's all subjective, I don't see it that way. What I saw was a woman so deep in grieving, she couldn't reach outside herself to recognize/deal with another person's pain.
That's the fun part about discussing a series, I think. We see and feel different things.

At the same time, she was chose to speak to Mrs. Graham,a relative stranger, and other than one little moment, she did speak/act more kindly. But let's be honest, I think Claire is a bit of a bitch-interactions with Rupert and Murtaugh, Dougal, Jenny, Jamie after their return to Castle Leoch-hmmmmm am I missing anybody? Lol So I don't think it was out of character at all to act that way with Frank.
