10 is not really THAT old. He could live at least another 5-8 years! I'm sorry he had heartworms, and hope he heals up quick! For such a big dog, it actually is very old. Smaller dogs live a lot longer than the bigger breeds.

Thanks so much for all the warm wishes! Olaf is not only the biggest dog in Seoul, he is the happiest- all day, he just stares at me and smiles. He is a wee bit obsessed, lol, but I think he is just so overwhelmingly happy to have a "job" protecting a family. He is a bit too over protective of the house and car (it is apparently Olafs car and Olafs house...) but we are working on that. outside the house he is a perfect dog- quiet, gentle, well behaved. So many people stop us and do things like pick up his feet and put their hand in his mouth to see his teeth, and he is a to,errant gentle giant.
He is ok with the cats now, he finds it ridiculous we love them but respects our right to be dumb and keep vermin. My old cat is 18 and walks around now when Olaf is laying down, she still stays in the bedroom if he is active, but it's a start. She also knows how slow he is, that helps. the upstairs cats (we have 3 upstairs that pick on my old one so they are separate) venture down occasionally and the really mean fat one doesn't even run if Olaf starts towards her. Olaf is a smart dog, she is 20 plus pounds of mean, so he stops and goes the other way like he meant to the first time, trying to save face. It's hilarious.
I am so hopeful the heart worm treatment goes well because his teeth must be done. He may be toothless after that- his canines are broken and most of the other teeth as well. Maybe chewing a chain? Maybe just eating food scraps (common diet in Korea- you should see him drool for dried seaweed and kimchi!) for so long, and he will have to be neutered, he had a growth on his back end that is hormone related and neutering will fix it most likely. Can't know for sure as he can't be put under to do a proper biopsy, unfortunately. Right now it's low on the priority list! But without the heart worm treatment, he can't go under for anything- x rays, biopsy, dental, so it has to happen. I just hope he is ok. He is so happy now, I want him to be pain free and happy for as long as possible.
