So we have a house to the east of us.. there is a greenbelt area then the house. This poor house.. in the 17 years since we moved next door, nobody has ever loved it.. Even the original neighbors...everyone that has either owned it or rented it, has done minimal to keep it up. It is an HOA community so they get by with just the basics.. don't even think about the backyard even being tended to.. anyways, it far enough where we have always been able to ignore it... and with the greenbelt between us.. well we just don't really associate with it or really anyone that has lived there. I mean we have not been mean or ignored people but yeah.... So the last guy that lived in it was young and his girlfriend lived there and she had a baby. She stayed there about a year or a little longer. They broke up and she moved out. (my neighbor across the street is the real Mrs. Kravitz and tells me all this).. so the guy lives there with his buddies for about another year. Parties and such. We ignore it all. About four months ago, we notice his truck that he drives doesn't ever move (it sits in the street).. not a bad looking vehicle.. an older SUV... but it does move like once a week. You never see the guy. One day the truck is there and it's gone a few hours and then never leaves again till the following week. Okay, whatever. We do notice he isn't living in the house though. No lights are ever on. No nothing, except the vehicle. Strange but whatever. Then other people show up on Sundays. Just for about a 1/2 hour. Take out trash (LOTS of trash) and leave. Truck is still there. No guy. Truck moves. Comes back. I feel like I am watching every move because it is just so strange. Now today about five people show up (I would say it would look like parents to me, but I don't know, but it isn't a bunch of young people except for the guy and some girl) to move more crap out of the house (plastic lawn furniture, lawnmower, etc.) They are there for hours but not really doing much. Just standing around outside. The guy is with them. Two of them are sitting in a car and looks like smoking pot. Pretty soon they are ALL gone and truck still there. And it was weird the way they left, like someone was chasing them. I AM the nosy neighbor.. I want to know what they are doing and what the story is. HAHA.. The real Mrs. Kravitz told me at one point he lost his job and was selling the house. There was a For Sale Sign in the yard for about a week then it was gone. That was four months ago when the real weirdness began. We did look up the house on Zillow and they wanted $248,000 for it, but the A/C was broken, the garage door broken, needs painting on the out and inside, and more. (this was all listed on Zillow).... NO one in their right mind would pay that much in this area for a fixer upper. So who knows.. I just have never seen such strange activity in a normal quite country suburban neighborhood. Not my business, I know that... but still...

Well, the part about it looking like no one is there, but people showing up to remove trash on weekends does sound like he's trying to empty it out. Maybe he's leaving the vehicle to make it seem like someone is there to outsiders??

Maybe he doesn't have insurance for the vehicle. SUVs are expensive.
I would be curious to know what my neighbors think of dh and me. He works from home, I don't. We maybe got out a couple times a week. We're up at odd hours. Unless they see the light from the kitchen or TV or hear it (we never hear them, and they have a toddler), they'd think we were dead.

Could be, but if anyone casing the place could tell he wasn't there. I thought of that... and why isn't he moving the stuff out? He's an able body young guy. And the stuff they moves out today was totally junk stuff. Not even donation worthy. Why save it or why not throw it in the trash? Maybe something physically wrong that I can't see, so I am not judging him, but from all his past comings and goings, and he was able to party hard with his buddies... but who knows.... like I said not my business....but living next door you just notice this stuff.
I just hope that someone will buy it and love it. I don't have to be friends, I don't care what they do... just love the poor house...

See now that wouldn't seem that strange to me, at least you have lights on and off and even a couple of time out a week is not that strange. I have a neighbor who she works full time and her husband may or may not go to work.. there are times we don't see them at all for a week straight especially if he doesn't go to work. I wouldn't put it pass him if there is no insurance. That is a good point!!!

workingclassdog--that's the reason why a lot of cars that run are left lying around that I've known about.
My guess is that a single guy with no job amasses a lot of trash and doesn't clean.
The first apartment that dh and I had in a tony suburb of Detroit had been owned by a single guy. We could tell because when we painted the kitchen wall, we discovered HUNDREDS of beer bottle caps on top of the cabinets!

Bake some cookies and run over there when you see him out next. Apologize for not being neighborly sooner. If you go when the are several people there, you might get more of the story!

Hoarder Foreclosure (Zillow usually says foreclosure or bank owned) Lost job, forced to move in with parents Brief jail time?
Dh hates it when I speculate about neighbors or random houses we pass on our walks. I like making up stories.

Initially, I was going to guess that the guy passed away in the house & wasn't found until a considerable time later. That was debunked when I read that you saw him with the others.

Maybe their flipping it? Family helping out or moving in. Or drug deals? Either way it would get curiosier and curiosier as they say. We have one neighbor we tend to worry about if we don't see for a long time as it's just her. She has a sister/friend that comes and goes every so often and landscapers. She's middle aged so not older but she's the only one on the street we don't know very well. We say hi to her when we see her or wave. As do most of our neighbors we know most everybody. I love our street.

Well a white truck showed up about 2 days later for about 1/2 hour. Black truck still sitting out there not moving until today. It's been gone most of the day so far. I have been in and out.
I don't think foreclosure yet because I haven't seen the 'signs' for a foreclosure.. like notices on the house or a lock box.
Funny I didn't mention before which is also a VERY strange thing.. the power company came over to the house about six weeks ago. He knocks on the door and no answer. Then apparently leaves and he leaves no notice or anything. The next day I notice a ladder in front of the house going to the roof, but no one is there. Ladder is out for one whole day.. the next day, the power company truck pulls up and he is on the roof. WHY would the power company need on top of the roof? Makes no sense. There isn't power lines (all underground).. AND even more funny WHY was I home and was able to see all this.. HAHAHA.. I feel like I sit and stare out the windows all day and I really don't!!!
Meth house? I don't 'think' it was.. POT? for sure yes.... but I don't think meth (but I could be wrong.... drugs are not my expertise..

How does Gladys across the street find out things? Yes, keep us posted. Yeah I haven't seen Gladys in awhile (she got a full time job recently) so I haven't been able to talk to her. She is a sweet thing though.. She knows EVERYBODY'S name and is kind to everyone and helpful. But she likes to let me know what is going on as well. LOL... I love her... and their yard is always spectacular!! So we can't lose our Gladys!!

Oh, we were totally that way about our neighbors. We watched their every move. Woman never mowed her backyard, the grass was 2 feet tall. She kept taking her dog out without a leash and he'd run away. She was an idiot.
The woman lost the house to foreclosure. She moved out and dumped all her trash, unbagged, on the side of the street. Then AFTER she moves out, she lets her high school senior throw his graduation party in the empty house. At 2 in the morning, parents start showing up to pick up their kids and they come to MY door. Then the cops show up. What a mess. And this woman was a realtor. Unbelievable the way she handled it. So tacky. It used to be a really nice house, in a very family-friendly neighborhood.

We have very anti-social older neighbors on one side. Every day at about noon, their adult son who lived at home would storm out to his truck and drive off (often with potty mouth going full force). 1/2 an hour later to an hour later he'd come back. A few month after we moved in we had cop cars all over the neighbporhood, and I had to look it up but he was arrested for selling pot (about 6 months before it became legal here). Haven't seen him since... although his dad was out there washing the son's truck every few weeks and the truck disappeared one day...
Meanwhile the same neighbors adult daughter has moved back in, doesn't seem to work, also swears like a sailor...
My point is neighbors shouldn't give us nosy people so much to observe!

We have a tendency to think the worst of people, but sometimes they have troubles you can't even imagine. A poster above called him an able-bodied young man. I just wondered how you could assume that. There are a lot of diseases that can strike a young person, leaving them disabled or impaired. Then again, there is the pot.

It 'could' be, but we have seen him and no signs of illness. True he still could be, but knowing this kid and his past history, I don't think it is the case. I don't think the worst of him.. just pondering....

I never cared what my neighbors were up to until we bought our house, now I am Mrs. Kravitz!
I have my immediate neighbors on text and if I see anything out of the ordinary I text them. I also watch them and know the cars that belong and do not belong.
I spend 95% of my time at home and the main window sits behind me, so I can look out plus the laundry room is on the other side.. I hear SO MUCH gossip this way. Learned my next door neighbor was 7 week pregnant, have heard about other neighbors and all sort of stuff.
My DH tolerates it but I think it annoys him a little, but bless his heart - he listens and engages me whenever I want to share something. He makes a effort to say hi to people so that he will know who I am talking about.

Maybe he's like me. I have debilitating migraines and leave the house maybe once a week to either grocery shop or maybe go to an appointment. My neighbors in town across the street from me told their son who lives in another state but is a friend of mine that they were worried about me last summer because they hadn't seen me in about a month but knew I was living there at the time. He explained to them that I'm sick every day.
Maybe your neighbor is sick too and his parents came over to help him get some clean-up done. Maybe he's got bad anxiety or depression and isn't functioning as he used to.
Glad you figured out the truck part of the mystery.
