I shut the box down, as it kept asking me if I want to upgrade. Fast forward about an hour it's configuring Windows 10. Holy hell, I didn't ask it to do that. I quickly powered off, but when I power back on, it says it's configuring Windows updates. I don't want Windows 10, how do I stop it? HELP!

Sorry, can't help you, but if it's any comfort, this has been happening to a lot of people according to an article I read recently, and not just home users, but office users too, and it's wreaked havoc on office systems. ETA: Since this spontaneous upgrade has been happening to a lot of people, a google search may find you a solution. Good luck.

Thanks! Crisis averted. Powering down, it just made it do regular Windows update, and now I'm back to normal. DH just came in and said it's like they are forcing you into an update.

If you do accidentally upgrade, you have 30 days to reverse it. I don't know how, but know our IT guy had to do it on a computer at one of our businesses because one of the employees said yes to the upgrade.

My tech people at work recommended this Windows 10 BlockerI installed it and it has blocked not only the update to windows 10 but also stopped the reminders.

My family has had no problems at all with Windows 10. I have no reason not to like it.

My new computer has windows 10 and no issues. But I'm sure dealing with an upgrade probably brings all kinds of problems.

Shelia already suggested the GWX program which is what we use on some client computers who want to stop getting the nag notices and prevent automatic upgrades. That's a good way to go.
Can I ask why you are resisting? Do you have an older printer that might not work?
The interface is remarkably Windows 7-like and I've not encountered any horrendous problems. I do use the Old IE browser instead of Edge, I also use Chrome and Firefox.

This computer is old, and some of it's programs are sometimes unstable. I'm just keeping it up and running, hoping to hold out until fall with the back-to-school sales or maybe Black Friday. I've also heard people have had trouble with files missing/disappearing. And now that you mention it, I may need to see if my printer will work.

a message on my computer at home says it's been trying to "schedule" the upgrade but i keep clicking "don't schedule". I had the same message right up until an automatic update that started the update for windows 10 while I was in the shower and couldn't stop it. Stupid windows forced it without me agreeing to it. On the flip side though, I don't hate it is as much as I thought I would. So far it hasn't been a bit of trouble.

Thank you Sheila for the link to the Windows 10 blocker. I let my older laptop upgrade to Windows 10 and got the black screen of death. The laptop I have now is new and I don't want to take a chance. I am such a chicken when it comes to techy things.

My son't school computer has done this twice - despite supposedly being configured to not automatically update. It takes forever for it to update and then he has to go back to the previous configuration. I'll have to tell him about the blocker. Unfortunately there's some program his school uses that isn't compatible with Windows 10. I haven't had any problems with Windows 10.

We turn off automatic updates on computers we maintain. Also, I've been having to go through the updates individually, as Microsoft keeps trying to slip in Windows 10 update sneaks (nags and such) every month, it seems like.

I have a friend who was forced into the upgrade and she absolutely hates is. So do most everyone I know who has upgraded. So far I have been lucky. I'm sure if I am forced into it I would also be forced into having to replace all my software and that is not an option at this time. It is crazy rude to force people to upgrade to something they do not want. Why is Microsoft forcing the issue? I don't understand such a bad business tactic.

My laptop is 3 years old or so, and I'm due a new one soon but in the meantime I decided to upgrade. I haven't lost any files and it all seems fine. DH has an iPad but I refuse to change

Losing files scares me. I use two different backup services but even so, I have so many files that it might take a while before I knew they were missing. The cloud based backup services I use only mirror my drive so if they're gone from my computer they'll soon be gone from my backup as well.

Backing up my files now. This update scares me, and I don't want it. One of my daughter's had it happen to her this week, and now her files are corrupted. It is a known problem. She is taking it to IT support tomorrow at school. It has been a huge mess.

I just tried to do the "stand alone" of the GWX and it just stops my EI an makes me restart. UGH! I hate how this is being shoved down our throats.

Were you guys running Windows 7 or 8? Or are they just trying to force everybody? I'm wondering if I'm next!
That seems like a bad business tactic. But then again, who is their competition really?
Android? Linux?

Knocking on wood!! So far the blocking link that Sheila posted is working. I haven't had any more Windows updates popping up. Does anyone know how long the block will last?
