Wow!
I watched my sister and her husband blow through a one million dollar inheritance while the rest of my family was scraping by. Really makes you shake your head sometimes!

Well she was telling me the things he has already bought and if he doesn't slow down, it's going to be gone. He did pay off his grandparent's house, where he lives and helps takes care of and bought an airplane (he is a pilot and flies all the time)....and a garage to put the plane in. I am sure that was a huge hunk of change. She said she told him he better slow it down... then he proceeds to tell her not to worry about her college he would help her.... big heart, but told her she better think long and hard about it.. and to mention I needed a few bucks!! (j/kidding with her)

It's really tough all around isn't it. I left a job Id been at for 5 years for a better opportunity. That turned out to be the job from hell. After 4 months there I found a new job I loved and was laid off after 4 weeks. My karma sucks. The Starbucks was for a barista. I'm over qualified. Lmao. And there are several Saturday's I can't work because I have class. I am getting desperate so started applying for retail jobs just to have something coming in. Turns out retail jobs don't like you not being able to work every day of the week. I give up. Can we start a club?

If you have a Fred meyer's near you, the deli is always hiring.
It isn't much but some of them are so desperate for help they are pretty flexible on hours.

starbucks really want flexibility when you start..2 weeks of training..then you often get the 4 am shifts .. once you get by that, then you can often work around something like saturdays.. because they are one of the few coffee shops who will take those without any experience.. and they have benefits. so when your class ends, you might try it again. or say you have open availability then get hired, then work around whatever.

I did Target for awhile as a cashier. I am getting to the point I might have to do something like that again. My dd got a job at our local hospital as a food server and is making pretty decent money just serving food or acting as a barista in the coffee shop. I think almost 12.00/hr.

Are you willing to work for low wages st this point? I know dh's hospital is often hiring food workers and environmental people (clean up crew). The pay isn't great, but they get the same insurance which is pretty good

I hope he has some set aside for paying taxes. That could get ugly if he blows it all and then finds out he's going to owe a bundle to the government.

He inherited it? Someone just had to die. How lucky he is!??! Yeah it was an aunt that died. He got a good chuck of change and so did his mom. I don't know the whole history of his family cause he has a sister and not sure if mom is just holding onto sister's part or if the sister didn't get anything? She is only 17 but sounds like she is a mess.. ran away from home, living with some older guy and she is still in high school. DD boyfriend stays out of the drama... he lives with his grandparents (well now just grandpa...grandma died six months ago or so)... he takes care of the house and pays the mortgage (well until now...lol) but he is good to his grandpa. He is a good kid, even if he does blow through it.. he is hard working and basically good to DD.

Why can't I have riich relatives. All od mine are poor. You know sometimes things used to be tight. When my husband lost his job six years ago, it was only five months, but we were scared to death. It help to think life is all about ups and downs. To appreciate the ups more, we have to have the downs. Don't worry. It will soon be up again for you.

I guess I don't see how investing in a home by paying off the mortgage and buying a plane when he is a pilot, is "blowing through" it. And frankly, it seems a little bit terrible to be jealous that someone got an inheritance. He lost another family member. Someone died.

Our Walmart is offering $11.50 to start or $13.50 for graves.

Check with your local school system. They often have clerk, food service and custodial openings.

No I think the things so far are okay but he if keeps it up... there won't be much left.... I not jealous at all... just funny how things are. (I don't think he was close to this aunt from what we know)... He had no idea about it or his mom. Yes someone died and that is sad. I am happy for him.. it's just perspective how I was at that very moment wondering how to get by next week and this happened.

I mean, I guess...but I think that wholly depends on what you mean "left". I read it as you seeing it as frivolous/wasteful spending, but I don't view his use of the money in that way. (And if I did it wouldn't be any of my business, but I think it's only human to sort of speculate on it anyway). I see it as a kind and loving gesture to his grandfather, and a way in which to free up income for other things, like long term savings. I think he sounds very money savvy. And then to also offer to help your dd with college? He just seems to be an all around really good guy who is really smart about money. (Minus the paying for a girlfriends education, I actually don't know that I would call that a smart move, but it's kind and it's never a bad thing imo, to help someone become more educated, so I would just be eternally grateful for his offer). OP, I'm not sure your post is what got my hackles up on this one, so much as what the next two responses were. I think it's poor form to comment on what other people do with their money, and it's why even my sisters who I am very close to have no idea how much money we have, or what we do with it.

Hugs to you and I hope you find the answer and/or find a job, stat!!! I'm in the same boat, although I was just a Nanny, earning some $$ in exchange for food. I'm disabled but do anything I could to put food on our table. Now I'm desperately searching for some similar setup......... It truly means limited food and now I'm 2 mos behind with cable (phone/internet). I use my internet and phone for potential jobs, so, this sucks........ Hope you find the answer......... or the BIG win!
ETA: I used to be a Paralegal for many, many years. Then I dropped out of it because it was far too much stress and I noticed that I was in more and more pain (chronic, severe pain from a bad accident in '74). I took years off and then began a new career in diet/nutritional counseling, which I LOVED. Worked at Jenny Craig for a few years, but even that began to take a toll......so I had to quit. That's when i decided that I was truly disabled. I don't know if i'll wake up and have to be bedridden for the day, or if I could get thru an entire day in moderate pain (thanks to my meds). I "work" with people I know--I Nanny their kids in exchange for food. To go from being a Paralegal to a Nanny is quite a change, but I love it. I did go on 2 GREAT interviews this past week and was deciding in my head which one to take. Well, no need--i didn't get either one!!!!!!! I don't know if it's due to my age (55) or what, but I'm severely bummed too. Hope everyone on here gets a break-soon!

I mean, I guess...but I think that wholly depends on what you mean "left". I read it as you seeing it as frivolous/wasteful spending, but I don't view his use of the money in that way. I think the things I would consider frivolous are things that are inherently not sustainable over time or things that will significantly depreciate in value in a short time. Paying off the house you're currently living in wouldn't be frivolous (provided you are able to continue to pay the taxes and upkeep on it). Going out and buying an expensive house, a new car, boat, plane? It would depend on how much it cost and how long you expect to be able to use it, as well as the costs to use or maintain it. An airplane is a nice thing to have, but if you spend all of your money buying it and have nothing left to pay for the storage of it or fuel for it in a year or two or five, it's not really sustainable in the long term. You wind up selling it for less than you paid for it and that's money right down the drain. People do stuff like that all the time. Just look at how many people have gotten the extreme tv makeovers on their houses and then have to sell them because they couldn't pay the higher property taxes. It's the same exact thing.

He needs to make sure he sets aside money for taxes. I didn't get nearly as much when my mom died in 99 but those taxes kicked my butt. I invested in mutual funds but those tanked after 9/11. I didn't know about inheritance tax. ( To be fair I was only 23 and super stressed out/mourning the unexpected death of my mom. But seriously I hope he has a good tax accountant. I was audited by the IRS and it was a disaster. Thank goodness I had invested though even though I lost half of it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had money to pay the taxes. It made for a very stressful time.
