Ugh ds is sick, 6 hours away! He was complaining of lightheadedness and dizziness mainly, but with a general upset stomach. No vomiting, etc. Just feels like crap x3 days now.
Went to campus health and they didn't find much, just did balance test, blood pressure, etc. He sounded pretty horrible and told me he just wished he could see his doctor - so I told him to have someone take him to the local ER. They did EKG, no bloodwork, but otherwise checked him over and said likely virus.
Some kids on campus have had flu, but he doesn't have any cold type symptoms or body ache type stuff. I'm stumped. He's a healthy 23 yo who generally eats right and doesn't drink, smoke, etc. Anyone know of anything like this going around, have thoughts on what it could be?
Editing to add: ER said no dehydration.

We have the same thing at our house right now. Fever and body aches with the worst stomach pain - but no V/D. Very odd combination. The 3 year old didn't have the fever but was vomiting. She has been just miserable whining about her belly hurting for 3 days now. I (a RN) have no doubt it is a viral something that the kids brought home from school. Just wish it was a 24hr bug and not a 72hr and counting one!

Virus or dehydration. The only reason I think of dehydration is that my DS recently had similar symptoms and it turned out that he was severely dehydrated. Hope he feels better soon!

No but I hope he feels better soon. I imagine it is difficult for you with him being so far away!

I'm guessing virus as the ER said they thought it was, but being so far it's hard to tell what is going on with him. Today he's saying he wishes he could see his primary care....so I know he's feeling bad if he'd like to see a doctor. In addition to being sick, i'm sure he's bored and has no one around to really take care of him. So difficult to assess what is what.

Symptoms say virus to me, especially if the flu is going around. Everyone experiences it differently. I'd wait a week and see what happens.

Is he tall? My dh is 6'4" and would get really dizzy and lightheaded. Turns out that if he doesn't get enough salt in his diet that he has problems maintaining his blood pressure. The drops make him dizzy. He increased his salt and fluid levels and it went away.
Being sick and not feeling like eating could increase this.
Tall people have more distance for their blood to travel, so it's easier for them to have vasovagal issues. It's not serious, just annoying.
People tend to be salt phobic these days, anyway. Salt isn't bad--only if you have high blood pressure.
Dh would drink gatorade if he didn't feel like eating.

Does he have any other symptoms like body aches? If he didn't have the stomach issue, I'd say possible migraine or vertigo. With the stomach issue, leaning towards virus.

Mono?
When I had it I could not move, without wanting to faint.

For starters, I'd send a roommate out for some dramamine and motion sickness wristbands, see if that helps. (Vertigo makes me sick to my stomach, so absent some other gastrointestinal symptom, I would take that out of the equation and deal with the lightheadedness/dizziness.) Both of my parents have dealt with bouts of vertigo with no identifiable cause. It sucks.
Did they check your son for an ear infection?

Vertigo. All the spinning makes me terribly ill at my stomach. He can buy motion sickness pills and lay flat on his back see if ease up any. Vertigo sucks it can last for days.

Thanks for all the possible ideas. He has dehydrated quickly in the heat before, but not the case now. He was checked for dehydration and is good, they also check blood pressure.
The vertigo upsetting his stomach hadn't occurred to me. I'm going to text him about that possibility! Can't hurt to try some bands to see if that helps.
I assume they checked for ear infection since he was seen by two people (on campus as well as ER.) I really thought he was probably coming down with the flu, but he doesn't seem to have symptoms of it. Don't think it's mono just because he isn't more tired than normal. He slept some yesterday, but said he tried to nap today and couldn't.
Thanks for all the suggestions, hoping things improve quickly - think he's tired of not feeling well and a little bored at this point!

I am pretty proud of that picture (and the baby too ). I took it myself when the photographer we use didn't get a good pic of her in that wrap. Had to capture those blue eyes in all their glory for posterity!

I had what you describe in February and it was the worst feeling. I had a friend in another city and she ended up with it in March. It seems to be a nasty virus that has worked its way across the country. I have vertigo from time to time and though it is similar, I knew that wasn't the case but trying the meds for vertigo might alleviate the some of the symptoms for him. I hope it is just the virus and beats a hasty retreat. You know they feel bad when they ask to see their doc.

Is he stressed out? That can cause lightheadness and upset stomach.

It does sound like a virus that's going around.
I'll sympathize with you. My DS had a horrible cough and flu like symptoms about a month ago. He's at university in St Paul, 1,300 miles away. The campus clinic had the number of a pharmacy that delivers. I called and got cough drops and Kleenex delivered along with the prescriptions. I also found a grocery store to deliver soup and Popsicles to him.
I hope he feels better soon.

My younger son had a virus a couple of months ago that involved stomach pain for a week, he also ran a low fever (around 100-101) for a few days. It has been going around here.
