How scary! Thank God you survived it as that was a very large tree branch. As suggested above, I would report it, too, if it happened in a public park. They may want to move that park bench or test the tree to make sure it's healthy.
So glad you are OK!

Who would have thought that reading in the park could be so dangerous. I hope you feel better quickly.

Omg, that is so scary! The tree branch does look healthy and I was thinking it might of been dead wood or diseased. When we camp I try to always look for trees with dead wood so I do not set up my tent there. But now it looks like even a healthy tree can drop a branch.
I really hope your ok and be sure and get lots of rest because you may have a concussion.

Random accidents like that are so frightening. We take so many sensible precautions in life and then something like this comes out of the blue. I'm glad you weren't badly hurt. A Huge branch fell out of an oak tree onto a car driving below in my town many years ago. The mother and daughter in the car were very badly injured and the car was totaled. A branch totaled my MIL's SUV a few years back. She was on her way to the vehicle to get in and go somewhere, and a huge branch fell from the wooded border area between her house and the neighbor's and crushed the top half of the SUV. I can only imagine how bad it would have been if she was in the car at the time. I'm sorry for the mother & daughter in your town. How awful for them. In her case there was a vine sucking the life out the tree and she didn't realize it, because it is in a wooded area, so she doesn't get a good look at those trees very often. But it was a large enough branch to reach her driveway from the edge of the yard. Now she sends her sons into that area to check on the trees. They also got rid of the vine.

That was exactly what I was thinking as the branch fell. When I heard it cracking and turned to see what was happening, my initial thought was "it's just a branch, no big deal." Then I thought "Wait! Branches crush cars! Branches kill people!" but by then it was already on me. Just really grateful I moved forward enough that it didn't fall straight on the top of my head.

hollymolly - While I suggested you call, I understand why you didn't. I'm the same way when I'm deep in an important project. I hope you get a chance to call tomorrow.

OH MY GOD!!! I am sure you were shaken! It looks like it is a beautiful day. YES, I hope you called someone or are doing so first thing in the morning. HOly Moly, girl! We're lucky we still have you!! What were you reading?!!? The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I was actually thinking I needed to stop reading and get back to do some work, but then I saw that I was only 12 pages from the end. So I stayed to finish the book, and that's when the tree fell. I lost my bookmark, but I knew where I was: 12 pages from the end.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Call them tomorrow when you can. Call them Wednesday if you have to. But do get the incident documented, just in case. Glad you weren't feeling TOO awful today.

Good enough that I barely notice a tree falling on me! And I totally get that you were too busy today. Some days I can barely think and then I'm like, DANG, I meant to call x y or z.
