I have wanted a new vehicle for awhile now but we were holding out since my van is not worth much. Last week we found out that the compressor is not working so decided to look for a new one. There is not a lot of variety in used vans around here--basically the choice is between a Caravan and a Town and Country, and what features you want. I would really like one with more features, like rear camera, Bluetooth, etc (don't have any of that now, though, so I am not used to it). But I can't decide if I want to pay more for those features. The payment is already higher than we pay now (but the same as what we paid in the past for our other vehicle) and we would like to get a new house in the near future as well.
I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but am wondering what features you find to be "must haves"? If I don't get Bluetooth or the camera, will I regret that in the future?

Get a used car (1-2 years older) and get it fully loaded. Cheaper and all the options.

DH's SUV has the backup camera and I really like that. I don't care about bluetooth and actually prefer a wired input with a 1/8" jack or USB so I can play music from my phone without using bluetooth, which runs the battery down quickly. I don't take calls in the car so don't care about being able to do so through the car's speaker system.
For me, I would look at safety, reliability and ease of maintenance before I cared a lot about extras. And don't forget - if you don't find the selection you want locally, places like Carmax (and probably others) will ship a car you like for free within 500 miles or so. Do a web search to expand your options.

We've been very casually looking for a different vehicle for the past few months trying to figure out what I want next. I think my must haves are:
Leather seats-absolutely not negotiable Bluetooth Backup camera Remote trunk opener
My would like to haves: Good interior lighting with possible lights in the cup holders Heated seats in the rear
Absolutely don't need but don't care if it's included: Sunroof. Am I the only person in the world who NEVER uses the sunroof?!

Regret is such a personal thing. Is the new house a "must" to get out of a declining neighborhood, get the kids into a better school district or is it a "want" with no urgency behind it? My only "must have" on a car is power mirrors. I use my bluetooth some but would be fine without it. I don't use my phone a lot while on the road so pulling over to make a call is very doable for me. I don't have a review camera.

Right now we are trying to decide between three--
2015 caravan with no Bluetooth, DVD, navigation or camera. 30,000 miles. It is priced slightly lower than we have seen elsewhere.
2013 town and country with heated leather seats, DVD, camera (not sure about navigation). 30,000 miles.
Or 2015 caravan with 17,000 miles, leather seats, no DVD (but they could add it since it already has a track to put it on), Bluetooth, camera. Same price as the town and country above.
The payments would be $60-70 more per month for the second and third options.

We just purchased a new-to-us used vehicle. I opted for the one with fewer fancy features because I figured more extras means more things to break and repair in the future. We keep our vehicles for a very long time.
I've never had heated seats or a hatch that opens with my foot, so I decided I wouldn't miss those features. I also couldn't justify the cost.
However, my new car does have Bluetooth and I'm appreciating its ease - I push a button and say "Call DH" - magic.

I'll add DVD to my "don't need" category. Your kids are younger than mine but it's a feature that rarely gets used in our current vehicle. Everybody has their own devices and it's not needed.
The DVD player was nice on one road trip because Redbox was plentiful and we'd just switch out movies at the next stop. By the time we took the next road trip we had to hunt for Redbox locations and the time wasn't something DH wanted to add to the trip.

Most kids watch TV or video on their mobile devices now and DVD players in a vehicle have become kind of obsolete. Heated leather seats. If you live in a cold climate, they're really nice. Back up camera -- in a bigger vehicle like a van or SUV, I consider it an absolute necessity. Love mine. It also has lines that help me parallel park and back into a space. Bluetooth - I use it almost daily.

I would not buy a car without a backup camera and Bluetooth, especially if I was planning on keeping it a long time. I didn't think I cared about a backup camera until my husband put one in his car -- makes crowded parking lots and tight parking spaces so much easier. I love Bluetooth for running music through my car without a cable (never in a convenient location), and in my personal case, I take a lot of long conference calls where I don't need to talk, but I do need to listen. Having Bluetooth is so nice for that.
When my husband sold his car, he installed his after-market backup camera and bluetooth in my 2004 car, and I love it. But it doesn't hold a candle to the built-in systems in his 2010 or in the newer cars I've rented. My after-market is slower, clunkier, not as good sound quality.
I will drive my current car until it's not reliable anymore, but those extra features are some of the biggest temptation to me to look at upgrading. The relatively small upfront cost now (compared to the total cost of the car) versus how long you'll own it -- totally worth it.
I do not think Navigation is worth it - in many areas, the maps get outdated super quickly and are a PITA to update, it's a PITA to input your destination, and overall doesn't work as well as Google Maps/Waze. I'd want the Bluetooth so my phone could give me navigation, but the actual built-in navigation has no value to me and is actually kind of an annoyance. Depends on your driving style though.

I agree about the backup camera. Now that I have it, I don't want to be without it. My car has a smart cruise control that adjusts to cars slowing down in front of me. I like that feature a lot. Heated seats are nice in winter,

I like my backup camera because it's easier to see if someone is walking nearby in a parking lot. Navigation isn't that big a deal to me -- my phone has more capability than my car in that department. I've never used DVDs since my kids are 18+.
My personal "must have" is all wheel drive because of my steep driveway in the winter.

When we bought my current SUV, I specifically picked one without a DVD because I didn't want the kids either constantly watching it or whining/crying/begging to watch it. We ended up with navigation (because it was in the same package as the back up camera- which was a deal breaker) and it is total crap. Runs off of a disk that is worthless (and they try to sell me a newer version every year for $$$$). It didn't even recognize major highways and addresses in our state capital ?! Plus programming it was a pain- I rely on google maps on my phone now. So I would test that feature out if it sways you one way or another.
Bluetooth is handy even though it wasn't even something I had thought about before. But for me, leather is a non- negotiable. And they have to be heated for our cold winters. Even my husband has that on his must have list for all of his work trucks now. And the backup camera is a big deal for me. My specific SUV has very limited visibility, which is why I felt like I needed it. But I do feel so much safer in the parking lot at my kids school with it, not sure I could do a bigger vehicle again without one.

On my short list would be a Honda -- non-negotiable, we are a forever Honda family -- and one that's newer than my current 2002 vehicle. Darn Hondas are made too well so they last forever. Personally I'd also like a radio that tells me what the song is. I'm forever asking Siri to identify songs, so if I could just glance at the radio to find out that would be great. I'd also like a jack/port/whatever to play my iPod without having to use one of those cassette tape converter things. (like I said, it's a 2002, lol) CD player because I like to borrow books on CD from the library for when I drive out of town. From reading this thread it also looks like I'd like a backup camera, although I've never had one so I don't know what I'm missing. Basically I'd just like something newer than 2002.

Leather seats are my only must have. Everything else is fluff-nice to have but not essential.
If I was saving for a house I'd just look for a reliable, safe car at a great price. I wouldn't get stuck on any particular model or feature-I'd just look for a great deal. To me, a house trumps a nice car any day.
Good luck in your search!

I would not buy a van without a backup camera! My last van we bought in 2004 at least had the sensors. We bought that car after my best friend accidentally ran over their 14 month and I won't drive a large car without them now.
I also can't believe no one has mentioned the push button start! I used to always end up looking for my keys and losing them all the time. Now they just stay in my purse and I love not having to dig through my purse when I have my arms full.
I also love my Bluetooth.

So now DH says that the prices at the cheaper place include the tax, title and registration so that would make the others even more expensive than the cheaper one. Most likely we will go with that.

It didn't work around here because we have too many stations out in the air waves. (at least that's what I was told when I took it back to Best Buy.) I don't mind using the cassette thing to play the iPod, it works fine. I'd just like it to be easier in our next vehicle.

A couple things I haven't seen mentioned - USB ports for charging things, I have a couple in front and a couple in back, they're useful. Coded door entry for when you don't have your keys is nifty if you leave the car to hike or run and don't want to carry keys. If you live in a place where heated seats are appealing, then remote start might be good too - I don't think you have to pay for that, it's standard on many cars. Push button start is nice when the program also includes opening the door if you are standing nearby with the fob. I don't have to press "unlock", just pull on the handle within a foot or so of the door and it opens. The sync/bluetooth feature on my car texts me when it needs an oil change. It's a big of a nag.

I think in the US all cars are required to have the back up camera. I also think all come with bluetooth wired in now. Our son purchased a "no extras" Escape (2015) and it has both of those features.
For me, having a built in GPS map system is a "must have." We do many road trips and that feature, with the 6" screen in Ford products, has become a must have. It beats the small screen of a phone. We drive to Canada twice each year and it is a must have for the cross country drive.
I like the heated seats, but we live in a moderate climate, so that is not a must have for me.

I just bought in January. My must-haves were heated seats (yes, I realize I live in the South) and a color (anything but silver or white). I assumed any vehicle I bought now would include Bluetooth or a USB connection, cruise control, etc.
My new vehicle also includes some things I really like. The blind spot detection is great - there is a light if someone is in my blind spot and a beep if I put on my blinkers while someone is in my blindspot. It has a ton of camera views, but the one I like most is the parking camera. I push a button and can see how well aligned I am in the parking space. I always though the push button start was a little silly, but I'll admit that I spend a whole lot less time digging through my purse for my keys now that I can just leave them in my purse all the time.
For me, GPS is not a must-have, though it is convenient. I like being able to see my tire pressure at any time, but I wouldn't pay extra for it.

I have 4 uses cars so for me must haves are reliability and affordable payment.
When i had younger kids i bought a new Pacifica because it came with a tv and headphones.
For a new car my must haves are few. Comfort, adjustable seat belt, seat raise and lower for comfort, good easy access dash board.

Ford products have the keypad entry. I love that feature. It allows me to lock up the car and not carry keys and sometimes that is a very nice thing to have.
Our latest car has USB ports. That is nice also on long trips.

My last few cars didn't have them, and while at first I thought I'd miss it, I never did. My current car has a moonroof that goes all the way to the back seat. I think in the 16 months we've had it, I've had it open maybe twice. I don't even open the shade much because then the sun bakes down into the car and it gets really hot. Add to my must-have list a good audio system. Tinny car speakers make my ears bleed. I need GPS - I'm totally directionally challenged. DH's car doesn't have it and I use my phone in that. While the map may be slightly more updated, the convenience of just having it in the car is huge. Mine runs on a hard drive, and I can update the maps whenever I want by downloading them. Not that I've done that, but it's an option.

Reversing sensors, power steering and electric side mirrors are a must for me. Oh, and it must be a manual car. I can't cope with automatic. As you might guess from my post upthread, my transmission sang it's death knell the other day. (We are waiting on the final verdict-but since it is my dad's mechanic who does the work on his off time, it takes a while.) So that I don't have to deal with renting a car, I am borrowing my parents work truck. It is a manual and it always takes me a day or two to get used to driving a stick shift again. This time though I am also going to take the time to teach the younger boy how to drive it too. While I prefer driving an automatic, I am of the mind that everyone should at least have a working knowledge of how to drive a stick shift-you never know when you may need it.
