For me, driving a stick is like riding a bike. I learned on one and no matter how long I go without driving one, it all comes back to me… until I get stuck on a really steep hill, then I have to really think about it.

No clue how. I don't think I'd be able to manage one with all the hills and stop and go traffic here.

Yes. I learned on a Volkswagen from my college boyfriend.

Yes, I can. My parents owned two 5 speed Hondas in the 1980's when I was learning to drive. I had no choice. We also live in an area with some steep hills and tons of snow. We still joke about the block my Dad used to make us drive around because it had a stop sign on a hill. So we all learned how to drive a stick and how to properly stop on a hill without rolling back.
In my young 20's, every guy I knew had a stick so I always got invited to go along in case they needed someone to drive home. My Army roommates also had manual transmission cars and trucks so I got to borrow their vehicles when I needed/wanted to.
I think it's important to learn, but I am not as good at teaching it as my Dad. I am chalking it up to my DH's mustang having a sticky gear shift. It's really easy to grind the gears. DH usually makes me drive it when we go somewhere together in it, because I am way better at it than he is. I get frustrated with him, because he doesn't listen to the car and change gears like he should. My Dad taught me to listen to the engine to hear when to shift.

Yep. I wasn't allowed to get my license until I could drive one.
My first 5 cars were all manuals.
I have paddle shifters on my new car now that I haven't tried out yet, but I'm kind of excited. It's still not the same though as jamming that clutch in, dropping a gear, and flying past someone on the highway. LOL
If I ever get another sports car, I would love for it to be a manual!! So much fun!

Yep - I had to learn on a 63 Chevy Nova, 3 on the column in 1974. Unfortunately it had been the car my Mother and older sister learned on so the Stick was broken and I shifted with a large Craftsman Screwdriver! We made sure all three of our girls could drive a stick just in case too!

Yes I learned to drive with 4 in the floor. Drove a stick shift for years and we also had a Jeep Wrangler with a stick. Fun!

Yes. I bought my first new car which was a standard and learned to drive it on the way home LOL. I haven't driven stick shift in years but I'm sure it would come back to me quickly.

Yes. My first three cars had a stick shift. I only switched because we had to buy a bigger car when I got pregnant and it happened to be an automatic. Since then we've had automatics but we're going to make sure our kids learn to drive a stick.

I've driven a stick shift in parking lots but never on the open road. I know when to change gears when my husband is driving so I think I could do it in an emergency.

Most newer MTs have a little break (?) To keep the car from rolling back (called hill start assist for Hondas). I don't think it's fool proof but it's a little better than older MTs. My first sick shift also did not have power steering, needless to say, my arms got really strong driving that car.

Yes, I know how. It's what I learned on and I drove a stick shift car until 1996.

no I cannot. I very patient ex-boyfriend tried to teach me once but I just didn't want to learn it. I don't regret no knowing how to drive a stick shift. haven't had a need to so far.

I'm 56. My father insisted all 4 of his children learn to drive a stick. Actually back then all of our cars were stick shifts. I have always preferred them and every car I have bought has been a stick shift including my 1999 Honda Civic that I bought brand new back then and am still driving today. It has less than 100,000 miles on it and I adore it.
I hate automatic cars and that's another reason I'm so adamant about not wanting a new one-stick shifts are getting harder and harder to find in new cars. I feel like I have more control with a stick shift and they are more fun to drive than an automatic which makes me feel like I'm an old lady driving to church. With a stick shift I can shift up and down quickly as I zoom around and it's fun!
I think everyone should know how to drive a stick shift because you never know when that skill may come in handy. When you travel overseas sometimes the only rental car that is left can be a stick shift. Or in an emergency the car you might have to drive could be a stick shift. You just never know when you may need that skill and once you know how to do it you'll know forever.

No, I never did learn how. I could have had my Dad or siblings teach ne but I had no desire to learn. DH wants me to learn -- he's a truck driver and just thinks it's a skill I should have. And my 2012 Taurus has paddle shifters but that was NOT a selling point. In fact, they are in my way and I'd like them gone!

My father insisted that all seven of us kids knew how to drive a stick shift. So can I drive one? yes. Can I drive one well? no. Because I avoid it like the plague. DH car is a stick shift and I have driven it, but it is a royal PITA when you are in stop n go traffic on a SoCal freeway.

Yes. I even purchased a brand new Honda (years ago) with manual transmission. I wanted better gas mileage. I drove that car until the wheels fell off, figuratively speaking.

I learned how to drive on a stick shift and drove one for 12 years. I never drove an automatic until we bought a car when oldest DS was born. It took me forever to figure out what to do with my left foot. I hit the brake so many times when I thought I should be pushing in the clutch,LOL. I had to hook my foot around the seat so I wouldn't do that.

Yes and I love driving a manual car. Unfortunately I had to give mine up this winter due to a partial torn rotator cuff in my shifting arm. I love my new car but I miss my old one.

Yes. One time on Christmas Eve our car broke down on the highway. We got towed into a dealer and down the road was a rental car place closing up. They saw us with 2 little kids on Christmas EVe and said, "If you can drive a stick we have a car in the back." I was so grateful I knew how to drive one. It was like riding a bike. I didn't forget a thing.

Yes I can, but as I haven’t driven a car with a manual transmission for about 25 years I dare say it would be a bit of a bumpy ride at first! When I first got my licence I swore that I would NEVER buy a car with an automatic transmission, auto cars were for people not as cool as I was. But these days I say that I will never buy a manual again in my lifetime. Especially having to drive in peak hour traffic every day. When you sit your licence test in Australia (or in my state at least) you have to choose whether to do the test in a manual or auto car. If you get your auto licence you are not allowed to drive a manual car until you’ve had your licence for over 4 years. DD got her licence earlier this year. When she was on her learner’s permit, her dad was adamant that she had to get her manual licence. I argued against it because we don’t know anyone with a manual car, so how on earth was she going to be able to practice?? He finally caved and “let” her get her auto licence.

I learned how to drive on a manual transmission, but it's been around 18 years since I've driven one. I assume yes (like riding a bike), but can't say for sure.

I learned to drive on a stick. My first few cars were also.
I haven't owned a stick shift in 20 years, but I had to drive one about 5 years ago for a few days, and it came right back to me. I'm confident I could do it easily if I needed too.
My son will be old enough to start driving next year, and I'm hoping to find someone to borrown one from to teach him. I think it's a skill everyone should know in case of an emergency.
