I don't drive (never had a license) - DH can drive a manual and so can my DS. DD is still working on learning to drive in general but we'll try and find a manual trans. vehicle for her to learn that on also

I didn't have an automatic until 2000. The car I bought my 17 y/o (at the time) was a stick shift. It's hard to text and drive while shifting.....I wanted my dd to focus on driving and driving a stick will do that.

I learned to drive on a 68 VW bug, so yes. I haven't done it in a long, long time, but if I had to I know I could.

Haven't driven a stick in years, did have another after the Bug...hope it's like riding a bike and would comeback to me if the need arose. Will definitely make the kids learn when the time comes.

I used to know how. Really not sure if I still can! Haven't used a stick shift in over 30 years!

Funny story.....my second car was stick shift and I never drove one. My new BF (now DH) drove it off the car dealer's parking lot and taught me how to drive it the following weekend. I remember trying to turn left at a stop light and the light changed three times before I could make it through the light. To this day, I feel sorry for the drivers behind me that had to sit through the light three times!
i did enjoy driving a stick shift, but I'm too old to bother with it now. I wouldn't be able to text and drive using a stick shift! JUST KIDDING - I NEVER text and drive, it's a big pet peeve of mine.

I would guess that 80% of cars in the UK are manual Wow, it's the complete opposite here in Australia. I just googled and found an article that says only 13% of cars sold here in 2014 were manual. My next door neighbour was trying to sell his car, a really nice Holden Cruz, but no-one wanted to buy it because it was a manual. He had to drop the price again and again. If it had been an auto we would have bought it for DD. You mentioned in another post that manual cars are better for driving in the snow, so I wonder whether that's why so few cars here are manual - we don't have snow.I think it's just what one is used to. Besides ,automatics are more expensive to buy here and they're not so economical on petrol (gas). We obviously get more snow than you do in Australia but we don't get that much really. We also have the driving test element mentioned in my post earlier. It's expensive enough to learn and to take your test here as it is without having to sit it twice if you initially learn on an automatic car. We don't drive as far as you or the US do either. The length of Britain from north to south is not much more than 600 miles.

I have no idea how to drive stick. I've never had a car with stick, nor have any of my family. I'd be really up the creek with no paddle if it was my only option.

He and a couple of his friends were camping this weekend and he feel and broke his leg. One of his friends had to drive him to the ER and none of his friends had ever driven a stick shift before. One of them gave it a try, but it was a rough drive as the kid had to learn as he went. I think this is why I figure everyone should at least try...miss LavenderLayoutLady I would be happy to teach you. All the kids in the family come to me for lesson because I am the most patient one...so I won't yell or anything. And I always buy ice cream cones after the lesson.

I know how in theory and have done it before, but I avoid it at all costs. To me, it just makes driving more complicated than it needs to be and it's for boys This^^. I can but I hate it. I didn't learn til i was 21 and never got smooth with it, especially on a hill. If there were no other cars in the driveway for me to drive except the VW or the Jeep I could make it to the emergency room, but if I was just out of milk I'd wait til one of the boys got home LOL. However, as DD is learning to drive I have made DS and DH teach her how to drive one of the stick shifts while she's learning. I do think she needs to know, and I think learning it earlier than I did may make her better at it. She says she enjoys it more than the automatic.

My parents made me learn on a manual transmission. As in, they wouldn't let me drive the automatic car until I'd learned on the stick. Oh, and it had no power steering. My very first lesson, my mom drove me to a hill on a back road near a school and stopped on the hill. Then I got in the driver's seat and learned. Or tried to. Eventually, a month before my permit was to expire, they let me drive the automatic and I wound up taking my test in that. I did master driving a stick, and (not to brag) I'm really good at it. And enjoy it a lot (but not in heavy traffic). I'm proud to say that I am able to stop and start on the hills of San Francisco with almost no rolling backwards. (Funny aside story... This was in 1984, and the automatic was a brand-spanking-new Chrysler minivan. The minivan was a brand new concept then, and you didn't see very many of them on the road. So few, in fact, that when we took it to the test location, by the time I came out with my paperwork, the car was crawling with police officers (who did the tests back then) who had never seen one before. They actually had trouble deciding who would get to go with me for the test.) DD just got her permit on Tuesday and will have her first lesson with the licensed instructor on Friday night. Then we can start taking her out too. Both of our cars now are automatics, but she really wants to learn on a stick eventually, and I really want her to. DH's next car (whenever that happens) will no doubt be a stick, so she will learn, hopefully before she graduates from high school. I think it's an important skill to have. You never know...

Up until a year ago I had only owned and driven manual cars, but I bought an electric car to use to and from work and that one is obviously an automatic. But our family car is still manual. The automatic is wonderful to drive, but I still prefer to drive a stick. It gives me a better feel for the car and I feel I have better control over the car. In the weather conditions we have here control is a very good thing

Another UK pea here who drives a manual. All my cars have been manual. My next car may be an automatic because I'm hoping to buy my dads off him in a few years when I'm ready to change cars (mine is 6 years old - a Citroen C4 - and his is only a year old - Kia Cee'd). Takes the stress out of hill starts!!
