Dogs all the way. We have 4. And we have had 8 over our 27 years of marriage. Hubby is extremely allergic to cats plus we don't like them. Sorry cat lovers.

Cats. Dogs are too needy. That said, we had 2 cats until one passed a few weeks ago, and I already told my son, no more pets, we are going to be a single cat family now. Disclosure: I am a dog person. I am allergic to cats. I couldn't resist asking: are cat owners, those that let them roam (all present company excepted, of course, no Pea would ever be so selfish!) under the impression, maybe, just possibly, that their cats are not needy because they are getting their needs met elsewhere? Before 7am this morning I have had two out of the three neighbour cats I am familiar with "visit" me. The grey one was waiting at my patio door as I opened it- tried to come in. Half an hour later I went to open up my husband's home office (separate entrance) and the ginger was waiting to be let out. Mine is indoor only as I live in town. He does go out on a leash occasionally. I would say if your neighbor cats are bothering you, just say something to them. They might think you enjoy their cats, just like all the dog owners whose homes I visit think I love having dogs jump on me.

That's okay, I really don't care for dogs, but I usually don't tell people because they think you are a horrible person if you don't like dogs. And if you really want to gross me out, just let your dog lick your face....

Dogs. Love them and always have. I am not a fan of cats. But, for some reason, when I'm visiting someone who has cats, they get all chummy with me, even the cats who supposedly hide whenever there are guests in the house. Those cats will climb right up on my lap and start purring. Weirdos. I know what you mean. I'm probably the one person in the room who doesn't care for dogs, doesn't have an interest in petting them, yet I'm the one person they will not leave alone. It's like the dogs can sense it and are determined to make me like them....

I love dogs, but I'm definitely a cat person.
No desire to own a dog, but we have 3 cats & I would've loved to have a 4th. But now that Xander is diabetic, we have our hands full. I just can't resist those sweet little kitty faces & the fuzzy little tummies.

I have a very strong dislike of dogs. Their smells makes me gag and unfortunately, I can smell them in nearly every house that I go into that has a dog, no matter how clean. I also don't like to be locked or jumped on and can't stand barking. If I could get past the smell thing I could probably see enjoying my own dog but doubt I would ever want someone else's dog jumping and licking and smelling me.
I'm ok with cats.

I was strictly a dog person for many years. The only cats I'd known were the kind who scratch, bite and hide.
But 10 years ago my dad died, leaving behind a 15-year old cat. I didn't have the heart to put him in a shelter, so we took him in. (Fortunately, my husband likes cats.). I had to learn everything from scratch because it's so different from a dog-how to pet them, what they eat, what their tail movements mean. Hell, I even had to learn how to clean a litter box, because the first time I dumped the scooped poop in the toilet.
Well, I fell in love with that old fellow. He stole my heart and lived another five years with us. Toward the end he got senile and would cry from the other room, and I'd go get him and hold him. I cried so much when he finally passed over.
These days I have a new cat along with my dog. I've become a cat and a dog person.

The owners either don't seem to care or don't get it that others don't love their dog as much as they do and rarely do anything about it. I usually do have to say "I'm not a dog person" to hopefully get them to do something about it. These experiences have led to me disliking dogs even more.

depends on the dog, depends on the cat. i dislike cats that have an attitude, bite, hate their owners, etc. i dislike dogs that are too "exuberant". so it's all about the individual personality for me.

Dogs for sure! I am allergic to cats and while I do love them anyway (huge animal lover!), there's just something about a dog. They're not called "man's best friend" for nothing, you know!

I know some people have had bad experiences like I did with cats when I was young. And my dogs have been taught not to jump up. It's one thing I despise especially with big dogs (which we have). I laughed at one of them the other day. Hubby had a piece of meat on the counter. The pup had his nose touching the counter just sniffing. His head comes up to the counter top when he is on all fours. He wanted that meat so bad but he didn't jump up to get it. I was SO proud of him. Training can do great things. And I don't let dogs lick my face either. ICK!!!!

I have spoken to them, have taken it up with the managing agents of both complexes. No help. I am here quite a bit, they are not, which is no doubt part of the problem. The family of the worst offender, the grey one, believe I should keep my doors and windows closed to keep their pet out , summer and winter. I appreciate how unpleasant it is to have a dog jump on you when you visit someone, as a dog lover I am not crazy about that either. However, having the local cats choose me as their companion and my home as their hangout is really not the same as me visiting their home. Anyway I wish all cat people were like you.

Yeah, those are shitty neighbors. Have you tried any cat repellents? I know I've read they don't like certain scents. I think citrus is one. If they are coming in your windows try spraying with lemon or orange essential oils. I'm sure there are some other non harmful ways as well.

I can tolerate being around them, but I swear some dog owners think it's cute their dogs are so jumpy.

I prefer cats because:
1) I don't have to walk a cat in rain, sleet, snow and cold 2) I don't have to wash their paws every time they come in the house 3) I don't have to hose them down after they roll around in the mulch 4) they have just as much personality and uniqueness as a dog 5) they wash themselves 6) I only have to scoop a litter box, not pick up poo from my yard every week 7) they don't bark at all hours of the day and night to annoy neighbors 8) they don't scare runners and walkers by charging an invisible fence

Both. A home really isn't a home without a cat or a dog... it's weird how impersonal a house is without a furry friend.
I also totally question the motives of people who don't like cats or dogs. I understand and respect liking one versus the other, but actually hating both? That's really questionable.

Yes, what REALLY amazes me is at the dog training center where we go (which is awesomoe), other dog owners say it's okay for their dog or my dog to jump on them. No it's not. Ever! It's an all or nothing deal. You can't say it's okay to jump on person A but not on person B. They either can jump or not jump. I hated when I was training my boys and they would jump and people would say "It's okay. Our dogs to it too." No, I am training them. I would even ask that they not pet or touch my dogs if they were not sitting. Other dog owners had no problem with it. Our trainer gets frustrated with some of the owners too. And our vet said that he had a dog come in one time and the owner was complaining that the dog kept growling. Then the husband walks in, hugs his dog, and begins growling at him. My vet said, now we know why the dog thinks it's okay! Ugh!!! A lot of times it's not the dog, it's the owner.

I like both and I've had both, but I prefer cats. They are so much easier to take care of. I'm lucky to be owned by two diluted calicos.
