I signed up for an Instagram account because someone online suggested it was a good way for writers to connect with other writers (we are mostly introverts who don't leave the house...) and so far all I have seen is the same writing quotes and sayings that I see on Pinterest. I thought Instagram had to do with taking photos and sharing them ? I'm confused...
Also if you follow anyone great on Instagram want to share who you follow?

Pinterest is your bulletin board where you post all the things that interest you.
Instagram is the magazines and newsletters from friends which you may think post-worthy. It can also be all the magazines and newsletters ever, which you can scan through looking for eyecandy, and if you find someone you consider interesting, you get yourself on their mailing list.
I have a very diverse group I follow, from a woman in the UAE who posts her daily cup of coffee together with lines from obscure Persian poets, to a Russian guy who raises baby squirrels, lots of quilters and fabric designers, a bee keeper in CA, museums, African villagers, New York subway art, bread bakers, dogs, friends' vacation photos. If you have an area of interest, search it, or just scroll through daily images and look for things that grab you.

Instagram should be for sharing photos. Personally, I only follow photo sharing accounts. I think when it first came out you could only take a photo through the app and not post one through your gallery. Therefore it made it very insta sharing.
Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board. You can create boards for all kinds of interests and have them in a very organized manner. When you come across a great recipe you don't have to bookmark it you put it on your recipe board or more specifically your main dishes recipe board. Then later when you are looking for supper inspiration you go to that Pinterest board for ideas.
I'm TracyBzz on Instagram I just mainly share photos of where I live (and my cats) and follow people who do the same. Facebook is for my personal pictures of my family.

The pins on Pinterest (should) lead back to the original website. Pinterest is a visual list of website bookmarks. It is more about sharing and collecting ideas vs your personal life.
Instagram is more about sharing your photos but people do repost other's instagrams. To me instagram is more social because many people leave comments where as in Pinterest I don't see as many comments.

To the OP -- as a way to connect with other writers -- I guess it depends on what your needs/wishes are, but Instagram is primarily visual -- the photo, often with a lot of filters to make it more striking. Sure, people add text and there is verbal exchange in the comments, but it's primarily visual. I personally am not a big fan of the video addition. But I guess as far as connecting with other professionals, I'd not see it as the best site. What about Twitter? I follow several authors on Twitter, and while it's often just teasers to link you back to their blog or snippets that interest them, it's been fun.

I prefer Pinterest. I like that I can easily organize boards. I still can't figure out how to add another account to instagram. I only follow three people and don't want to have businesses, hobbies, and friends all in one feed.

I perfer IG over Pinterest but I do enjoy both. I feel like I can connect more with people on IG though because you can leave comments on their posts. Also if your interested in specific things like say you're interested in losing weight with Weight Watchers all you have to go is search hashtags #weightwatchers #fitfam #weightloss stuff like that and you will be able to find others who are into the same thing.
I personally follow crafty/papercrafting people, weight loss folks, makeup people and some celebrities that I like. Oh and bands I like.

a Russian guy who raises baby squirrels This is someone I'd like to follow! Like others said, Pinterest is like a visual version of your bookmark tab on your browser and it's web-based so you can be on any computer, log into your pinterest account and find whatever it is that interested you. Instagram is more phone app based (I have no idea how to get that link that gives you the instagram picture). You can share your photos that you took or through your gallery whether it's your cloud or downloaded. I follow a few people that have been posting a quote a day that they probably found through google search or their pinterest. The majority of the people I follow are either peas or yarnies.

DKnitter there is This_girl_is_a_squirrel which is a about a squirrel that someone took in after a storm and she now relies on human care-- she lives in a cat post and wears outfits sometimes. Then there is shirinsultanpasha who posts baby squirrel, often video, but sometimes stills. Now that I look at his account, I question my statement that he's Russian -- it says his location is Istanbul. I guess because many of the comments are in RUssian I made that assumption. Anyhow, it's fun to follow.
I love to travel, but it's not an option for me, so Instagram is like vicarious exploration around the world for me. I often follow people living in areas featured in a novel I'm reading, or a museum that has collections of interest to me. I also keep an eye out for blog or forum posts where people list their favorites-- and then I'll give those a try too.

rst - thanks for those! For me, Instagram is more about quick inspiration, as well as following the few friends who use it. I follow lots of quilters, some designers, fabric companies, travel and lifestyle bloggers I like (some have moved away from blogging to Instagram). I typically post photos of just general routine daily life - pets, plants, something funny I see out and about. Pinterest is more for saving things for future use/inspiration. I find that I go in spurts on how much I use Pinterest, pinning tons for a week or so, then not even going there for a few weeks. I'm in a 'not visiting Pinterest' mode right now. I've gotten really annoyed at all the Suggested by Pinterest pins that are 99% things I've already pinned. Another reason I don't go there as often is that I have the Pinterest button on my browser toolbar and can usually just pin something straight from a webpage.

My daughter is a writer. She is on Tumbler. She has connected with many writers on that platform.

Well while searching Instagram for people to follow I keep encountering porn, which almost never happened with Pinterest... I can't figure out how to block photos on Instagram so I guess I will not be using Instagram while my kids are in the room...

If I scroll long enough I always find porn also. I once was on a marathon scroll of nail art. After clutching my pearls I started using the "inappropriate post" button. I can't remember what it's really called, but you can report photos on Instagram.

My Instagram is mostly photography based. Very few quotes. And I share more pictures on Instagram than Facebook.

Never use porn in the hashtags search or in the hashtags you use, even for something innocent like #yarnporn. You'd be surprised at how many porn accounts start following you or liking your stuff. It's nuts! I report any account that I suspect is a porn account. From the first painting, photograph, etc, sex is always going to make an appearance.
