I was sitting watching the news last night and my DH and I got to talking.. is the world more aggressive or are we just hearing about it more now-a-days?
I watch the 11pm news every night and it is just getting worse and worse, at least that is what they lead you to think.
I also encounter this same aggressiveness of people in stores, on the road and just about every where else.
What do you think?

I'm not sure if it's getting worse or with social media what it is now, we just hear about every little/big thing. I've gotten to the point I don't even watch the news. It's all so negative and bad. It really does start to wear on a person hearing all that negative.

That's a good question. I'm not sure -- violence has always been around. We just didn't have 24/7 news, or social media. I think the abstraction and anonymity of the internet flows into other areas of life, stoking a lot of angry people.
ETA: I'm not sure about the aggression on the roads. But I have to say that when I drive to Boston, which is 15 miles away, and it takes me an hour and a half, I'm pretty close to road rage. Overcrowding frustration?

I think it's more self-centered, which shows up in many scenarios as aggressive. For example, rude drivers. "Oh, I need to get over now. I'm going to get over." It's not necessarily the aggressive driver who just wants to be at the front of the pack, it's just the clueless person who doesn't think about the fact that everyone else on the road is a person, too.

I think we are somewhat more aggressive than say, 30-40 years ago. But I think we also have a couple of generations who have been desensitized to aggression` they act in agressive ways without even realizing it. we have also faced a size able increase in population (205 million in 1970 to 350 million in 2015) I think crowding wears on the nerves of humans.

Well it seems that patience and the path of least resistance would be very beneficial at any time. But maybe more and more are noticing this at this time. And those who feel they have to rush and push things around may notice obstacles keep getting in their way. I know people like this and they are having a hard time with going "more with the flow" now more than ever.

Historically speaking, society is not as aggressive or violent as it has been through out time, but that's not saying much.
Where I see an increase in aggression is in social media. I'm constantly shocked and horrified by the terrible things people write online. I won't even read online public comments in online newspapers or on You Tube and such. There is very little restraint and people are so ugly for no real reason. There seems to be so much anger.

I think it's just all the media. I don't watch the news (too depressing) but today in the car I heard a radio ad for one of the evening news programs tonight about what if an earthquake hits during peak tourist season on the coast and 100,000 people "are in peril" or something like that (from a tsunami).
Not that that has to do with aggression, but you can't get away from the media. It's everywhere, it's like they want to scare everyone to death and tell you every bad little thing that happens everywhere.

I think it's just all the media. Think of the Civil War, WWI & II, the Crusades. Humans are nasty creatures. The media just makes money out of misfortune.

It really does start to wear on a person hearing all that negative. Yeah, I've stopped watching the news too - just got too depressing. I'm not sure if there are more horrible things going on or they're just in the news - and made as dramatic as possible.

It all feels more intense, immensely detail, redefining, very vocal and most of the time leaning toward chaos.
Almost everyone has something to say and believe it needs to be heard. The next person needs everyone to know they are very offended at what the other person said and before you know it that has made the news.
We have more than ever at our fingertips and available to us and it is all just too much. Too much of a good thing isn't a good thing.
Just my opinion.

It's 24 hour media. When it feels like too much, I disengage.

well the news is a tough thing to follow - "if it bleeds it leads" mentality. and we have access to so much so quickly now.
but i just read a crime story about a man who put 25 sticks of dynamite in a plane in 1957 that his *mother* was on to do away with her. f you look back, there was a lot of freaky shit going on all along. we just may not have known...

I don't think it is more aggressive per se, I feel like it is more selfish. I think people are more apt to look at how everything effects (and affects) their own world and proceed accordingly without considering how their actions impact others.
I don't care for it. Kindness is perceived at weakness, patience is seen as a liability ...

Actually there are now studies on aggression and global warming. For every degree above normal temperature, aggression goes up.
There are predictions of mass global riots and devastating civil wars if temperatures continue to rise.

People seem so entitled. Person not moving fast enough, blast your horn and give them the finger. Who cares if the slow person was trying not to turn left in front of someone else. (Happened to me last week).
Pull into a handicap parking space with a placard but it pisses someone off because you don't look handicapped so write a nasty note and put it under the windshield. Never mind the fact I am not handicapped but my 90 year old mother is and is with me.
As long as it's done anonymously or the bravado of the keyboard, then it's fair game and I (collective I) and can say/do whatever.
Get out of my way because I am more important than you.
Ellen says it best, "be kind to one another."

I live by the philosophy that you never know if you will cross path with someone either personally or professionally.. better to be nice and not regret and have to fix something later.
