Hi my washing machine has developed a stale or musty smell. I don't know how or why but it has. Should I do a load of wash with vinegar? Should I do an empty load with just vinegar? Any advice would be great. I can't ask you know who...but she would know, of course.
ETA it is a top loading kind.

Is it a top load or front load machine?
Once a month on my HE top load Whirlpool Cabrio washer I do the clean cycle. No clothes but I do add vinegar.
If its front load, you may have mold or mildew in the flaps.

Is it a front loader? There are a couple of products on the market that you can use to clean the machine. Otherwise, I would just run an empty load with hot water and vinegar or bleach. Also, wipe all of the gaskets with a rag and get under the rims. Leave the door open after you wash.

I should have said it's a top loading kind. Will edit my OP.

Are there restrictions which kinds of fabrics it is safe on? I was "told" it's just for setting dark colours. I have never done this before so it's all new to me. I don't remember this happening before either.

We have a top loader. To clean it we use a product call Affresh. It's a washing machine cleaner.
Also, when we finish a load and move items to the dryer we don't close the lid to the washer, we leave it open to air out.

If I wanted to clean a musty smell from my washing machine, I'd run a cycle on hot with a cup of baking soda. When that finished, I'd run again with a cup of vinegar instead of baking soda. I don't know if it works for cleaning the machine, I just know that's how I get the musty smell out of towels.

Leaving the lid open so the innards of the machine can air out and dry between uses will make a huge difference, but that's assuming it smells clean to begin with. Doing the baking soda/vinegar loads will help a lot. We have a sanitize cycle on our front loader, so that's what I use along with an extra tub rinse.

do an empty load with cold water and bleach. let it swish around good. then drain and leave the lid open so the drum can dry out completely. leave it open for days if you have to.

No soap or anything just vinegar and the sheets? Do they come clean with just water and vinegar? I will try this.

Imagine if they made laundry pods in pink, blue and green with just vinegar and gelatin. Kids could eat that, get a rude awakening and never try them again.

Oops, the nothing else means I do not use vinegar with clothes. I use Gain origional as it doesnt cause eczema for dd, ds, and myself. Te vinegar is used to soften and get rid of musty oders.

It doesn't smell horrendous it just smells musty.
