Do you think if you worked for a company for 30+ years you would be told the same way Kelly was told about a change at work? either with your co-worker, or any other news that is specific to your day to day job? or would they call you in before hand and let you know?
I know for a fact my work would NOT. They would send out an email to everyone letting them/me know. I wouldn't get any special or private warning. This just got me to thinking. Maybe company I work for is just....cold? ha

The previous jobs, I had, no. Her situation is far from anything I've ever done. I think she should have been given a bit of a warning. It is her co-host.

While it may not have been handled the way she wanted it to, neither Michael or ABC had to tell her anything. He is searching for a new job, he didn't have to tell his co-worker. ABC is looking to hire someone, they don't have to tell her. Put aside the emotion of it, and it boils down to someone looking for work, and an employer looking for new hires. A normal company would NOT share this info with other employees. And the warning to her is the fact that he said he's staying until September, so technically she's been warned, and her employer knows to look for someone else by that time.
All that aside, maybe a little conversation from Michael to Kelly would have been nice...but maybe they don't like each other , so he didn't want to say anything? We'll never know for sure. But I thought I also heard that when Regis left she only found out 15 minutes before it went public too.

The last thing they would have wanted was Kelly discussing it on national t.v. I don't know how she held it in. But then again, she is an actress. I'm sure that helped.

There was a tv station (Hamilton ch. 11) that recently went either into receivership (?) and none of the staff knew of the news until it was announced 'LIVE'. A shock to everyone. The station is still on the air but is like a cable station. This is in Canada and there are CRTC rules.

I might not get that kind of heads up, but I am not a multimillion-dollar asset to a billion-dollar company. I certainly don't think she needed to know all of the inner workings that were happening, but to find out the way she did, with no warning or time to take it in, is absolutely not acceptable for a person in her position. Again, she is a huge asset to ABC/Disney, and she was treated pretty disrespectfully.
BTW I don't care much for her or the show, I just happen to agree with her here.

Well there are just two of us... so if my boss was going to quit.. I would want a head's up! When I worked at a job where the boss's leaving would make the news.... we were told in advance of a public announcement. I think it is nice to do. She could have had all sorts of reactions that they would not want made public.. I think they should have given her a heads up.. and Michael should have told her.

The other teacher in my department would give me the heads up, maybe even before they told admin. I would do the same. We work closely and rely on each other.
If she was being let go, I would not expect a heads up

Normally, no, I don't know about one employee leaving unless they share that information and most of the time they don't share they are job hunting until after they have given their 2 weeks notice.
If she is worth the salary they pay her she should be able to do her job with whoever shows up to work with her.

We recently had 3 top level execs that were let go on the same day. We were told about an hour after they were walked out of the building, before it hit industry news. A sibling of one works at our company. She was told an hour prior so that she could work from home and not have to be there for the big announcement. I thought that was nice at least.

It's not even like he was out looking for new jobs. I'd guess they have been silently testing him to see how he fits there. Or maybe they hate each other. Who knows. haha. She was given 5 months notice of him leaving; she was just mad that she only knew 20 minutes before the public knew. Which is one reason I said (in the other thread) that I think maybe ABC got word it was about to leak to the press, so they scrambled to tell her.

I know it's all the same company, but if you break it down to the simplicity of a person looking for a job, or being offered a job, and a company looking to hire, she didn't actually have the right to know along the way. It just makes the whole thing a blurred line that he's leaving one job and taking a new job all within the same company. But people do that all the time in the real world.

Regarding whether Michael should have told Kelly in advance...I heard that the head of Disney asked Michael not to say anything. It does seem that Kelly would not have taken the news well, so I don't blame him for not saying anything, especially since he is staying with the same company.
Now, I do think that Kelly should have been told in advance by her superiors. As others have said, he was a co-host with her on a national show. A little different than an average coworker, in my opinion.

My husband had to layoff 1/4 of his employees. He knew 4 months before the l/o were to happen. The office needed to finish a project. He was warned not to say anything or he would be fired and sued.

I simply don't think you can compare what happens in a normal 9-5 job to what the situation is with that show.
I'd be pissed too if I were her. In the end though, it's a TV show I don't watch so it's no skin off my teeth, so to speak.

I do sometimes have advance notice of some changes, but not always. I was apparently the first employee told when the previous owners of the company sold it. I didn't know before the day they closed on the sale that anything was going on. So I wasn't shocked when we had a staff meeting where everyone was told. 3 of us (out of like 10) were told in advance of the meeting - people that were considered key staff. But a lot of the time I have no idea what's going on before anyone else does.

I think there's a difference between certain employees (say long term employees) being told before other employees and all employees being told before it hits the public news cycle.
I do think that the employees should have been told before it became known by the public.
And unless he was under some sort of a restriction not to tell anyone, I think it was kind of a dick move on his part not to at least give her a heads up that there might be a change coming so that she wasn't blindsided. They worked as closely together as two employees can work - I think she was entitled to not have it sprung on her at the same time the general public and viewing audience found out.

Generally if someone is leaving on good terms, staff would be notified via email that the person is leaving and when their last day will be. If a loan officer or management gives notice, they are usually asked to leave that day (theoretically it's to protect against the person taking customer information with them or trying to poach clients during their two-week notice period, since everybody knows that's how it works in banking I don't see what good it does). Perhaps a co-worker who was a close personal friend might have knowledge ahead of time that someone was job hunting, otherwise job seeking is kept pretty hush hush as it would be grounds for immediate termination (right to work state). Again this applies more to lenders and managers. I work in commercial banking in a fairly small market (metropolitan area of less than 1 million) so other bankers mileage may vary. Additionally, I work on the commercial lending side, retail and small business banking may be handled differently.
ETA the employees immediate team members would be notified in a quickly called team meeting prior to the email announcement.

Even in far far less prestigious jobs the same thing happens.
In my previous job I was second in charge of a high dependency unit and we had a lot casual/contract nurses. One guy I worked with a lot and he was an excellent nurse, I never had the slightest doubt about him, his knowledge or his actions. I worked with him for over 3 years. I worked with him on Friday and came back on a Monday and all trace if him was gone, his name erased from the roster, his stuff gone.
I never knew a thing and found out everything in retrospect, it turns out on a shift I wasn't there, he made a decision to give someone a drug. A decision I would 100% have agreed with. The supervisor on at the time who had less experience made it an issue and unknown to me she agitated about it behind the scenes, made it sound more than it was, got the patient's doctor involved and as a result he was told he wouldn't be required any longer. I had no idea, no-one asked me for my opinion on his overall work etc. He was just gone and I had to suck it up. Once the decision was made, there was nothing I could do about it. Sure I was pissed off about it...even more so because of the other far less capable nurses I had to work with after he was gone.
Do I think I should have been involved/told/consulted? hell yes...but at work that's just how things go sometimes. I don't know why Kelly thinks she would be any different to anyone else, that's just very naïve of her, especially in her field of work.

I suspect there's more to the Kelly story.
She might have had a handshake agreement with ABC or a producer that they would tell her if MS was moving to GMA full-time, or a co-worker agreement with MS along the lines of "hey, I promise to give you a heads up if I'm considering moving permanently".
For me, these would explain her feelings of being betrayed personally. She had to see the writing on the wall and had to be asking questions.
At my workplace, it's a mixed bag. If a person is professional and cooperative they may be given a heads up, especially if they suspect and ask outright if a coworker is leaving and they would be helpful to the business in the transition. Someone less professional definitely would not. It's risk management.

Yes, his last day is now 5/13 (I only remember b/c it's Friday the 13th!)but it was supposed to be September. They sent an email to employees yesterday that moved it up. It said they discussed it with Kelly and Michael once she came back. So somebody wanted his last day moved up. But I saw the clip of him announcing it on the show and he would be there until September. That's why I said 5 months.

I work for a large company. I would not get any advance warning of a change at the corporate level. However, I would more than likely be directly involved in any decision for my specific area of the company.
I am notified when any of my employees applies for an internal position, but I wouldn't necessarily know about a co-worker unless my department as involved.

As I said in the original thread, no, we would not be notified and very few co-workers share promotions with each other before it's announced. We are always told to not share until AFTER the official announcement.
From the other thread: We didn't find out for three days that one of our co-workers wasn't coming back to work. She was the assistant and the person we were all supposed to go to with any daily issues or questions. She went home Friday night like normal. We thought she was out sick and three days later we were just told she wasn't with the company any longer.
I think I've only been personally told by maybe 2 or 3 people over the 13 yrs I've been at my job before an announcement.

Gone the next day, and we are told they can't tell us. Nothing. We never ever know unless we eventually run in to that person out of work. or are friends with them off work. It's crazy!! to me it leaves a feeling/cloud of distrust among employees and our bosses. Will we be next? what happened? what's going on? vs just tell everyone.

I don't think she did herself any favors in how she handled this situation. I can't second guess why ABC wanted MS at GMA, but it sounds to me as if she thought she would be elevated to that show over him.
When a co-worker gets a promotion, I don't think the employer has any duty or obligation to tell me about it ahead of time. I'm trying to think of a comparable example at another station -- let's take NBC. So if Hoda Kotb (sp?) was being moved to the Today Show directly, NBC has an obligation to tell Kathie Lee first? I guess they could do it out of kindness but I don't see the butthurt over it.
