This thread got me thinking that there should be a mascot for this issue:

Oh, and plurals do not need an apostrophe. It seems as tho the world has gone apostrophe crazy, just throwing them in everywhere just for fun. There's a local market that has an ad in the paper weekly with prices for "tomatoe's" or "apple's". Nope, I'm not shopping there. That ^^ One of my peeves too.

I have mixed feelings about this topic. I do get annoyed when I see these errors, especially if it's a post or other text I'm reading and the grammar and spelling are just so bad throughout that I have a hard time understanding what I'm reading. However as someone who knows the difference, I find that the older I get the more mistakes I make when it comes to things I'm writing in a hurry. I sometimes find myself writing no instead of know or are instead of our. I never used to do that. Usually, I notice it before I hit submit or send but not always and that's embarrassing.
I also have a husband with learning disorders and a daughter with slightly more severe problems. My husband can't spell or write worth a darn as he wasn't given the help he needed. He relies on technology to help but even that is far from perfect. DD is getting much more help and has made great strides the first two years of high school but she will likely always struggle somewhat with grammar and spelling, especially if she is in a hurry or upset.
I think people need to remember that we have a diverse group of people here. Some have learning problems. Some don't. Some may have an IQ of 140 and others an IQ of 90. Some may have dropped out of high school and some may have a Ph.D. Skip over if something bothers you but realize that a person may be doing the best they can do, and while they may not be great at grammar or spelling they may have other skills and/or things that make them a great person that you do not.

gahhh---this is one of my biggest pet peeves. why did people never retain this info from elementary school? That's what I was thinking. This one is so easy. It's not like then/than, affect/effect. The effect of this is on everyone. It affects all of us. Did I get that one write? right?

You're fighting an uphill battle with this one. Yep, people just don't care if they look or sound ignorant.

We know the difference - we just don't always proofread our posts. It's all how your brain's wired. I make phonetic typos all the time. They're glaringly obvious when I read them, but when I'm typing fast....my brain goes into some weird phonetic mode. Yesterday I typed know for no - why in the world would my brain type 3 EXTRA letters. It makes absolutely no sense. I do this ALL the time! I guess just b/c I'm in a hurry and distracted? I don't know. If I see my post later I'm mortified and edit it, but it's really weird. I know the correct word but my distracted brain apparently does its own thing sometimes. ETA: I REST MY CASE! ha! It's....its.

I tend to be a grammar Nazi (in my own mind--I never call anyone out on it). My husband, very intelligent man that he is, is terrible at grammar and writing in general. However, he is a wiz at math/science. He's an engineer, and the way his mind works is mind boggling. He is very good at what he does, and is well known in his field in the city we live in. While sometimes the way he says and writes things makes me all twitchy, I don't ever say anything to him about it. I'm sure he probably thinks about me, "well, she may be good at grammar and writing, but at math stuff, she really sucks!" (That's because I do!)

Wow, I thought it was just me with the phonetic misspellings. I've noticed I do it a lot in the last few years. I usually catch myself with no/know and are/our. This did not happen 5-10 years ago. I'm 51 this year.

Also in my 47 years I've found there's a difference between "booksmarts" and common sense. Some of the self proclaimed geniuses I have known in my life do not have the common sense God gave a mouse.

My Dyslexic daughter (with a very high IQ) constantly confuses her words. Not everyone has the capability to grasp our language. These types of posts anger me.

Ditto it's taken me a few years not to be so sensitive about it too. Sometimes it takes a bit for fingers to catch up to my brain or is that the other way around School was a bitch and I didn't get tested till later in school, we just figured it was my physical stuff that made me slow. I like the edit option. I almost always have to go back and edit. But I do find lots of these funny!

I don't care if you get your, you're, their, there, they're, too, two, to, witch, which, dear, deer, ant, aunt right. I won't judge you. But a lot is two damn words and seeing alot makes me judge you. One certain pea gets it wrong every time and I only notice because she acts like a superior, know-it-all bitch who obviously has no friends in real life and I just want to scream at her "TWO WORDS!!!' Then I take a deep breath and remind myself that this is the internet and I was lucky enough to have hooked on phonics as a child and can sound it out because I have a brain. You are welcome for the run on sentences.

Once you start using " and ' correctly I will consider editing my posts for typos.
It's correctly spelled YOU'RE btw.

I get typos, auto-corrects and phonetic mistakes. Their/they're, here/hear, etc I can easily look past.
There are habitual misspellings that are becoming so mainstream, however, that they are indicative of the decay of basic knowledge.
The one that drives me most insane is could OF in place of could've or could have. That is not a typo or auto correct. That's ignorance and I have no patience for it. If I come across that twice in a written piece, I stop reading.

Affect and effect.
Spelling of separate.
I still read the posts, but it grates. However, I am certain that I drive others crazy, too.

Patients and patience. Lose and loose and loss.
OMG, what's worse is that my mommy brain actually writes the wrong word even though I know what the right one is. I don't even know what my fingers are doing anymore. It bothers me when other people do it, but the fact that I'm now writing waist when I mean waste DRIVES ME FREAKING NUTS! I mean, how I can correct other people when my own fingers are working against me?!

I consider this forum as a chat place not a formal lecture place. I roughly check what I've written but life is too short to proof read every quick answer.

I do find a severe double standard to math ignorance and grammar/spelling mistakes. I'm not sure why it's so pervasive, but there seems to be a phenomena of almost bragging about one's inability to complete simple math problems, but the judgey pants sure come out over spelling mistakes! That's an excellent point. It seems to be a badge of honor among women especially to be coy about poor math skills. We aren't doing ourselves any favors with that.

I fully admit to sucking at algebra. I've twice gone back to college and had to take remedial algebra both times. Both those times and the two years in high school I was an excellent algebra student while in the class. It's all about what's important to you and how you use it.

For some people it's just easy to "see." My first year I had trouble, but after that it just seemed to click and I've loved it ever since. My daughter, who was in the gifted classes and won spelling bees, just couldn't get it. I would try to help her but she couldn't "see" it. In "my" life I don't write something down everyday (unless it's a text to my husband) but I do use my math.

I'm 51 this year. I've noticed that in the last couple of years my brain has gotten a little foggy and I tend to type as I speak-southern drawl and all. Half the time my spelling, grammar and punctuation reflects that and while I try to fix everything, I still miss a lot. Even worse, I lose my words all the damn time. I know what I am trying to say, but the word just floats right out of my brain and I sit there staring at the person in front of me or the key board like an idiot trying to remember what my point was. I figure it is a function of menopause-makes me crazy. Hopefully people will forgive me when I mess up.
