I've had an idea buzzing around in my head for a while about doing an album of changes happening around our area. One example is a building which was only a couple of streets up from our house that had been there for probably at least 100 years. One day I was driving home from work and noticed something was off. It took me a minute to realize the building had been torn down and left only an empty field. Another example is another nearby building which has transformed over the years from a schoolhouse, to a post office, to a grocery market, and now sits empty as the restoration process has stalled. I've noticed with these things is that there is no record that I've been able to locate of documentation of these changes. I'd love to make an album, and include digital images, documenting these changes in our town that the news and such seem to not notice. Has anyone done an album or gone about documenting these things in your town? I'd love to hear about it and/or see some examples!

I haven't documented it but I have some great photos my grandmother took in the 60's of the town I grew up in. She included lots of the iconic buildings plus views of the main street and from a local watchtower. She also has a whole series of her church being built (her mother was one of the two churchgoers chosen to open the doors for the first time) and I really want to do something with those. I'd love to hear or see ideas on this topic.

I don't do EXACTLY what you do - but I would if I lived in an area that had historic buildings that they where changing. If through FaceBook groups, other internet searches or newspaper articles I find an old photo or streescape of a place I have lived, or am just interested in I will make a page, and if I can go re-create the same scene I try to do that. The state of New Mexico had a great contest in 2012 where they posted 100 photos (2012 was the 100th anniversary of statehood), and the goal was for people to identify the photo and than travel around the state and take a modern photo of the same place. Of course that became an entire album. I identified and was able to travel to 75 of the 100 photos posted. I also photograph and get photos from around the country of County Courthouses to complete my project of having a page for every County Courthouse in America. I have a National Register of Historic places project, a project of abandoned buildings, homes and cars, a project of post offices, the list goes on. I find I really enjoy these type of projects. I have a few of the courthouses, NRHP and the 2012 NM State contest up on my website at www.tripswithtwo.com. Enjoy, and I would love to see what you come up with on your project.

I've not documented per se, but have taken photos of areas we've lived where changes were happening... the new subdivision popping up around an old, well established farm - changing the landscape, the seasonal vegie stand that used to be an old school bus, restoration to a tiny town historic area. I've not been able to document many changes in one town because we're never there long enough lol! I've always tried to take pics though of things that were often not really taken much notice of, small town quirks and changes.

That sounds like a really fun contest! I checked out your link and noticed you don't have any photos for California Courthouses yet. I can send you photos of ours. Just let me know your email address to send them to.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I would have never thought of that! I did see for one of the buildings I mentioned that I was able to find it on Google Maps Street View. But your suggestions is great for older buildings. The photograph within a frame photos are so cool! If only I could line up photos at the same exact place. Sounds like a great challenge to me!!!

I think your idea is terrific. I love taking pictures around my city. For instance, we have a kazillion "city steps" around town and back in 2009, I went around taking pictures of some of them. Some are so high that I won't even climb them! I think lots of people are interested in pictures of their town - more than you'd think just checking out the former Pea Gallery ... or Pittsburghers are just "hometown proud" because we even have tv shows and books about "things that aren't there anymore" and "then and now." LOL
One thing I try to do is get pictures where my family has been, but might not be there in the future - there's a corner market where my ex as a child, and then my children, bought penny candy. I took my DGD there for the pics. The city pool that my ex and then my kids swam in during the summer has been turned into a sprinkler park, so I got pics of that. Not quite the same as a building going missing, but I love how it documents the "then and now" in a way. One of my more recent LOs was an ice cream shop that included its history over the last 50 years or so going from all sorts of businesses like a gas station to an ice cream store.
When I go back to my birth city, my sister and I go around to different homes our family lived in, or places we went as kids, and we take pictures documenting the changes. Sometimes we've been lucky enough to get the actual changes, sometimes we just get a picture of an abandoned lot.

excellent idea.
Something I want to do in our town is take photos of the different places we go - our church but also the other churches that we have had meetings in (Girl Scout, Boy Scout), the schools my children attend, the playgrounds, the pool, the shops we frequent etc...
There's a FB group for the town I lived in as a teen and people are always posting old photos of places there and it's bringing back lots of memories for me and others - I want to make an album for MY children of what our current town is like NOW while they are growing up so that in 25 years or so (I graduated high school and moved away 26 years ago) they'll be able to look back and remember how it was and compare it to how it is now.
