Background. I belong to a club that has a number of men's and women's sport teams. In women's tennis we have 6 rated from A-F which complete in match play against other clubs. Each year players rank each other and if we lose players to attrition (schedule prevents somebody from playing, moving out of area, etc) the top ranked person from the next lower team moves up. New members are assigned to the lowest team unless they have proven, documented experience that indicates they should be on a higher level team (i.e., my friend who played college tennis went straight to our A team).
I have played on our lowest team for a while. A few years ago I was supposed to move up but was injured and missed the season so was kept on the lowest team. Summer of 2014 our team won the F-level inter-club championship which meant that our entire team moved up to E-level. The league includes two E-level divisions Blue and Red which are considered competitively equal. Our club had an existing E-level team - they are played in Red and we played in Blue (remember, equally competitive divisions) but they were considered the higher ranked team within our club. Well, surprise, surprise, our team won the E-Blue division and we, as a team moved up to D-level. E-Red had a bad season and in fact almost got knocked down to the F-level.
Yesterday team rosters and schedules were posted and myself and two other women from last year's E-Blue team have been assigned to this year's E-level team and this year's D team has 4 members from E-Red - the team that played so badly they almost had to move down.
What I am being told is that they took the 4 highest ranked players from E-Blue and the 4 highest ranked players from E-Red and make them the D team and the rest were put on E. This because E-Red was considered the higher ranked team at the start of the season.
In your opinion, was the club's decision correct, or should the women who won their division in 2015 being given the chance to compete at the higher level?
