Our family will be traveling to Virginia Beach in June to visit family there. We thought we would go down to the Outer Banks for 5/6 days also, I know A LOT of people go there. But, I have been doing some research and I don't see what the attraction is?? Am I missing something? It certainly does not seem to compare to the Florida beaches, seems very "sleepy"-can someone help me out? Is it a place worth going to? What's to do there, besides obvious beach stuff or is it JUST a beach destination?

It's the rustic, natural beauty. The laid-back, casual atmosphere. The lighthouses. The aquarium. The wild horse Jeep guided tours. The Elizabethan Gardens. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Jockey's Ridge. Kitty Hawk Kites. Duck Donuts. Wonderful restaurants with outdoor dining. Time to play games and do jigsaw puzzles and read great books. It's a chance to escape from the fast-paced world we live in and enjoy the people we love. If you're looking for big-city, man-made excitement, you won't find it on the OBX. I suppose you could say it's "just" a beach destination. But I wouldn't trade my time there for all the money in the world.

I found the same issue with Hilton Head. If you are very used to Florida beaches, Mid/Northern Atlantic beaches do seem much "sleepier". We went to HHI and honestly left 1 1/2 days early because we were so very bored. Part of it had to do with being unfamiliar with the area, not golfing or being really into bicycling. Friends that go at least 1 time per year love it and seem to know more things to do behind the scenes.
I prefer Gulf Coast Florida/Alabama personally.

As someone coming from New England, you get a lot more for your money with rentals, you get water that is warm enough to swim in, you get clean, uncrowded beaches. I'm not sure exactly what it is Florida beach towns offer that's different. To me the appeal of a beach vacation is it's a relaxed, casual vacation with your family doing family activities--eating seafood, playing mini golf, doing some sightseeing, getting ice cream.

I've spent a week on the OBX 14 or 15 out of the last 18 summers and I'm not bored yet. But yes, it is a different vibe than Virginia Beach, Panama City, etc. (ETA: We aren't going to make it there this summer and I'm sad...)

I lived in Norfolk/Va Beach for many years and the beaches there are really great and unless you know the locals spots you're going to be extreamly crowded by other tourist when going there. The OBX was my vacation away from Va Beach tourist because it was so much more laid back. I never had people right on top of me on those beaches, they have things to do without it being too commercialized IMO.

It's not a Myrtle Beach/Virginia Beach/Ocean City kind of destination. If that's what you are looking for, you will be disappointed. The beaches on Hatteras and Ocracoke are regularly on the most beautiful beaches in the world lists. It's all of the things Legacy Girl shared. We vacation on Hatteras Island and there is no mistaking it for anything other than fishing villages making themselves welcoming to tourists in the 21st century. So there are galleries and coffee shops and bead shops but mainly just a lot of beautiful open beach (it's national seashore down there) and not very many people.

I don't know but I'm going in June and I'm so excited I could scream! I just want to with my family, learn about Kitty Hawk, enjoy our friends, ride our bikes, be lazy, play games and fly kites.

Yes I would much rather go to Floria or the Caribbean. But the OBX is a great alternative for us.
For us the OBX is within driving distance. So that is a major plus. It is way less crowded than virginia beach, myrtle, etc. You can rent a huge house with a few families. There are houses in all different price ranges. We like right on the beach with a private pool! The beaches are clean, and depending where you are you can have the beach to yourself. We fly kites right on the beach because we have so much room. No rows of people like other places.
You can choose your "remoteness". We tend to stay in kill devils hill. So there are plenty of places to eat, shop, etc. There is mini golf and other beach type activities. Just no boardwalk.

DD and I are going to Washington, NC this weekend and hope to visit the beaches of NC. We want to go to Shacklebanks and maybe Okracoke beach. So to say that DD and I are excited is an understatement!!! LOL!! I really prefer quiet and less crowed beaches. My sister moved to Largo, FL and we love the beaches near her. Indian Rocks beach was so nice last year on July 4th. It wasn't crowed at all.

It is a nice seafood/steak place (you have to make reservations or you will never get in) but we love, love, love it.

Another OBX lover and I agree with everyone else--we go for the laid back rustic beauty of the beaches there and just the relaxation. We usually go to the Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo area which is VERY quiet. We generally rent a house on or near the beach with a private pool and we just enjoy family time. We spend long lazy days on the beach reading, swimming, boogie boarding, shell gathering, sand castle building. We head back to the house in the afternoon, maybe swim some in the pool, shower, mix some cocktails or open a bottle of wine and make dinner. We just unwind and listen to the surf, play some games, go in the hot tub--we just love it. At least once or twice we do a fire down on the beach, make s'mores, have a few beers, the kids chase ghost crabs on the beach with a flashlight. We've done some touristy things--went to the Lost Colony (the oldest, longest running outdoor drama in the US), visited the Wright Bros Memorial, went on a dolphin watch cruise, did a sunset sail on Roanoke Island, rented jet skis, etc. We usually take one trip over to Ocracoke Island and walk around to all the shops, visit the beach there, eat lunch at Howards and ice cream at Sweet Tooth. Sometimes we'll go to the acquarium. It's just such a lovely relaxing vacation. We've went there for years and I never tire of it. But it's not for everyone. If you're looking for a really busy boardwalk and tons and tons of shops and novelty things, it may not be for you.

The OBX was my vacation away from Va Beach tourist because it was so much more laid back. I never had people right on top of me on those beaches, they have things to do without it being too commercialized IMO. I lived in Newport News for 5 years and regularly drove right past Virginia Beach to get to the Outer Banks. I despise touristy beaches. I live in SC now and hardly ever go to Myrtle Beach unless there's a compelling reason (mostly kids' sports tournaments). Give me a pure beach with very little distractions and I'm a happy camper. I grew up in Florida way back in the day when there were many beaches there that were still pristine and sparsely populated. That is still what I prefer as a beach. We are renting a house this summer in Ponte Vedra hoping to get away from some of the tourism. That said, we all prefer different things. My ex-H and I vacationed every summer on Hilton Head. His northern cousins joined us there one year (they were used to Myrtle Beach) and hated it. They wanted the hustle-and-bustle beach experience. YOU have to decide what you are looking for and decide accordingly.

My mother lives in Newport NC which is on the mainland across from Atlantic Beach. I grew up in Southern California but really appreciate the relatively untouched beaches of the Outer Banks. Shackleford Banks is a nice place for shell scavenging and looking for wild ponies.

The appeal is that it is "sleepy" and not completely overrun by tourists all the time (although judging by how many OBX) stickers I see on cars that might have changed). That and one of my favorite aunts lives down there so I'm biased.

If you think of "just a beach" as a negative, you probably won't enjoy it.
