So we got a package today from the Residence Hall Association for the college DS will be attending and they are suggesting we order bed linens from Residence Hall Linens. They say the beds they have are longer than regular twin size beds and their sheets are guarateed to fit.
The prices aren't too bad, the packages are much more than he needs, but the separates seem ok. So please tell me, is this worth it or will I be able to find linens cheaper some place else?
Thanks
BTW this might be the first of many questions over the next couple months as we prepare to send DS off to school. The Peas are by far the best source of information in times like these. Thanks!!!
Here is another question, how do you know if your child gets an grants? He received the information about loans, but we did not see anything about grants, and just in case, what are some creative ways to get money for college, or lesser known financial aide resources?

We bought the goofy dorm twin sheets at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Seems to me they were reasonably priced.

You will definitely be able to find linens for the dorm beds cheaper (and with more selection) elsewhere. Just look for XL (extra long) twin sheets, they'll be everywhere at "back-to-school" shopping time.

I asked this question last year. We got all our stuff at Target. Don't be sucked in by their, "you can ONLY buy this here!"

We bought a set just because we really liked them and then got another tshirt material somewhere else. But I was also outfitting two dorm rooms at the same time, so it was convenient. We wanted the eggshell carton pad, mattress pad etc. And after 3 years they have held up well.

You will totally be able to find them elsewhere - we got ours at Target, but saw them other places - Twin XL is what you'll be looking for.

Congrats to you for surviving senior year stress and to your son's acceptance into college! We bought my daughter's from here and they have a guarantee for the linens to last for four years or another set will be issued. We did it because daughter liked the package offer and we were done. Since then, I have bought new sheets because the ones they supplied were not as comfy as the ones she and at home. Her comforter was the worst because it has pills and faded after one washing. Now it looks grey instead of black and no bleach was used. The towels are rather scratchy. Anyhow, we lived and learned. Also, she never used the storage bags, the clip on fan, or clip on light. Those clip on items are useles with the wooden beds. The frame is to wide to clip on. The comforter stays folded at end of bed. The throw they gave was lost the first year.

I was wondering about the quality. DS is so not picky, but I want something that will feel nice. We will keep an eye out this summer for sales. We have plenty of time. Thanks Peas you really are the best!!

Yup, ignore the packet. Buy your own extra longs. All the stores will be carrying them soon. I also recommend getting those stretchy mattress "garters." Its a piece of elastic with clamps on both ends. You clamp them on either side of each corner. Dorm mattresses are often so thin that the sheets slip off them. The garters will hold them in place.

You can get xl sheets anywhere.
You will want to find distinctive bedding and towels, so his stuff doesn't get mixed up with roommates stuff.

We bought our twin XL sheets, mattress topper and mattress pad from Kohls. Also purchased quick dry towels from there. We purchased the comforter set (Tommy Hilfiger) from Ross. A twin comforter will work fine on a twin XL mattress.

We get this question every year. It's sent out to every college kid. The colleges must get some sort of kickback for giving out names or something. you will also get the good old midterm gift basket fliers too. Just send your own. Buy the XL sheets, etc at target, JCPs,etc, etc..

I liked that I could preorder everything from the BBB near me in Massachusetts with one of those little scanners. It was all ready in boxes to pick up at the BBB in Atlanta. They had tables set up in there to spread it out and decide which things I actually wanted to buy. We went back to the dorm with exactly what we wanted and needed. It was helpful that once we saw the dorm room, she realized she didn't need some of the things she'd picked out.

Here is another question, how do you know if your child gets an grants? He received the information about loans, but we did not see anything about grants, and just in case, what are some creative ways to get money for college, or lesser known financial aide resources? It sounds like he was given a letter outlining his financial aid package. Federal financial aid is disbursed based on "need" (a complex formula of family resources and cost of college) Normally if he recieved any grants that information would have been with the info about the loans. But, to know for sure, contact the financial aid office at his university.

I guess when we go in for orientation he will have to confirm everything. Thanks.

We always ditched those letters. We bought their linens on sale at PB Teen. They will be seniors in the Fall, and they have lasted all 4 years! Money well spent.

Far fewer people do than expect to. Or he has failed to register for the selective service (military name for the not-draft but still have to register) If you think your income is low enough. But, colleges only receive so much in funds based on needs of their previous demographic. Once they have awarded it there is nothing more to give even if more students show up that are eligible. Financial aid needs to be taken care of early in the process or you miss out.

Most twin sheet sets are XL now.
As for the egg carton mattress pad--check out feather beds instead. They have synthetic feather beds if real feathers won't work.
The mattresses at my school were horrible. I found a feather bed on QVC--I've seen them on Overstock as well. I loved mine! My bed was so comfy.
I just wish I had known about feather down comforters and duvet covers back then. My synthetic bedspread and duvet cover I made to cover it the last two years in college was ok.
I LOVE my down comforter! I got it at Ikea. If your kid loves a thick comforter--you could get a king and fold it in half. That's what dh and I do for our split king bed. We bought an all season down comforter at Ikea (two thin layers snapped together for winter), and now that we each have our own sheets, we each took one of the thin layers. SOOO comfortable to have a huge comforter to scrunch up around you.

Best was that we didn't have to schlep everything with us and it minimized returns. We did go back to bbb and target for a couple things we hadn't thought of, one being a rubber mallet to assemble some of the stuff.

Yep. Twin XL
All three of my kid had to have the T-shirt sheets. All 3 hated them and by second semester had gone to Target and bought regular cotton sheets to replace them.

Boys need very little. Everything DS took to school fit in the back of our van, including his easy chair and a fridge with a freezer on top. I bought the same sheets that DS has on his bed at home from Kohl's, along with the egg crate mattress pad, pillows, blankets, etc. I just shipped it all to my brother's, who lives 20 minutes from DS's school. (We are 1,300 miles away.)
DS brought his clothes, school supplies, and his lap top, along with his winter gear. I added a box of medical supplies (cold medicine, cough medicine, band aids, etc.)
One thing that really came in handy was his tool kit. It was just small bag of tools that he had had for years when helping DH out around the house. The screw drivers and pliers were just from the Dollar Store, so when he loaned them out it wasn't a crisis if they didn't come back. That tool kit got used a lot that first week of school.
We added a box fan after he got to school and a humidifier once winter started. That's all I can remember sending from Amazon, other than ink cartridges (there is a printer, but it's 3 floors down. And we had an old printer.)
We will need a caravan when DD goes off to school...

We also did sheets and towels from Target. For DS, we splurged on a quilted comforter from PB Teen. It's classic and will last him a long time. DD wanted a duvet, so I sewed the flat sheets from 2 sheet sets into a 2-sided duvet cover that matched her sheets. She picked out the inside comforter from Target.
