I said "yes, ma'am" to someone younger than my children! When I was little (probably three/fourish,) my mama used to keep a small dish of M&M's in the refrigerator. Every time (or more likely most of the time) I would say yes ma'am or no sir or please or thank you I was allowed to get an M&M from the dish. That was in the days of warm fuzzies and cold pricklies, but I think these days they would call it positive reinforcement/classical conditioning. To this day, I ma'am and sir everyone. My sixth grade teacher did not let us have recess until everyone "yes ma'amed" automatically. And fifty years later, it is still automatic when I'm in Alabama.

It looks like I'll be the first midwesterner to admit to saying, "Uffda." I make a point to use the word hotdish instead of casserole because it is just so Minnesotan to say it. We must keep that going.

I'm LOLing at all of these. I say most of them. Fixin' to, y'all (ALL THE TIME), Lord have mercy, etc. It gets worse if I'm 1)drinking 2) around northerners 3) super tired 4) really having a good time or really mad. Looking at that list, I'm probably pretty southern more than I realize!
Last week though I had a confrontational situation and I got southern batshit crazy, redneck (no offense intended) in about 2 seconds. First thing out of my mouth was 'aw hell naw, what did you just say to me?' Let me say that I hate confrontation and avoid it wherever possible, but if I get backed into a corner or my kids are involved, it's on.
