in your living/family room? Do they match? Are the shades all the same color?
We are redecorating our living room(we had some water damage in the ceiling) and I can't decide if I want the same color shades or not.
TIA!

1 we never use it and I need to get rid of it. We put in can lights (with dimmers), have lots of windows and a couple of skylights along with tall ceilings. I hate rooms with out good lighting.

One floor lamp in the living room. It has a low wattage bulb in it and serves more as a night light instead of being a real source of light.
ETA: My living room has large windows for light during the day. I don't use the room much after dark except to sort of watch tv. The lamp gives more than enough light for comfortable tv watching. If I have company I turn on the overhead lights.

We have eight lamps throughout the house some are used more than others. There are two in the lounge which are matching and are used only occasionally.

LR has 2 small end table lamps, my Daylight lamp for cross stitching and then there is a ceiling light. The ceiling light is way to bright for me, but hubby seems to think when we order dinner to be delivered that he has to turn that light on so people can find us. I hate it as it lights up pretty much the whole house so you can see from front to back, the bedroom and the kitchen when that thing is on. The end table lamps are only on if I'm not stitching otherwise I use my day light every night.

I love table lamps, I use them all the time and rarely put the ceiling lights on. I hate the feeling of lights shining down on my head!
In my living room I have 6 lamps. Matching ones either side of one of the sofas (gold/glass with cream shades), matching small tall candle holder style ones, in a patterned neutral colour, either side of a console table. I have a large glass blue base with a duck egg shade on some drawers and finally I have one behind my TV to give a back ground light.

One. It's mostly just for decor but I do use it to read by in the winter.

In our living room we have 3 lamps. 1 floor lamp, 1 accent lamp, and one large lamp. The shades coordinate, but do not match. The lamps are all a dark oil rubbed bronze look, but do not match. I like lamps to match on your bedroom night stands, but in the living room I think they just need to coordinate.

One floor lamp and two table lamps in my condo sized living room. They do not match. Floor lamp is antique bronze. One table lamp is a beautiful turned wood in a vase shape, the other table lamp is a cylindrical shape covered in mother of pearl inlay.
ETA: the shades do not match, though all are off white/very light beige and a simple "drum" style.

Two in our great room, three in our basement great room (which no one uses) two in our master bedroom, one in each guest room and one in my craft room. In each of those rooms, the lamps are the same. We have recessed ceiling lights in every room (hate them) and use them because we don't have much natural light coming in the windows.
We just bought new lamps, OMGosh the furniture stores wanted anywhere from $130 to $300. Found an outstanding selection at Tuesday Mornings and Hobby Lobby.

we have three-- two that are a set of matching lamps / lampshades that sit on the end tables next to the couch and loveseat and an Ott light on the other side of the loveseat that I use if I'm crafting. Okay, technically there are four-- there's a light on the ceiling fan-- but we never use it; it's more for mood lighting than to see by, but I hate overhead lighting in general.
I don't think it matters, as long as it goes with your overall style-- if your decorating style is eclectic / non-matching, then get individual lights.
eta: in our bedroom, the lamps on either side of the bed match-- same lamp, same shade. I also have a smaller (different) lamp on top of my dresser (mine is the taller dresser) so I can see my earring, necklace, and brooch collection, which hangs on the wall right next to my dresser.

I actually only have one lamp in the living room. We used to have 2, but one broke, and we reworked the room, and felt it really wasn't even necessary to have another, so we never replaced it. They did match at the time, but I don't feel that if you have several they all need to match.
In fact, using different one might be one way of helping to define different areas within the same room. You know, matching lamps on either side of a sofa, but something different in a corner with a bookshelf and an armchair, or on a desk. It might give those other areas their own special feel in a way.

OMGosh. This is quickly becoming a discussion in our house. I currently have two lamps in my living room, which do not match but have the same shade. I like the matching shades for some kind of continuity. I am pleased with the way they look but truth be told we use the overhead lights 90% of the time.
My mom just moved in with us. The woman is a lamp hoarder to beat all hoarders. She is convinced we don't have enough lamps. And that ceiling lights are of the devil. I have a very Pottery Barn kind of vibe going in my decorating. Clean. Simple. She is insistent we need a wrought iron, scrolly, large, floor lamp with a red silky butterfly imprinted shade that she doesn't want to get rid of and she already has four (FOUR!!!) lamps in her bedroom so obviously the butterfly lamp needs to be in my living room. I'm trying to show grace. I'm trying to show grace. I'm trying to show grace. Sigh. I want her to feel at home but I really don't want her to redecorate my house. Then I feel all guilty about that. lol

We have 3 - although we have canned lights in the ceiling - it's vaulted and the lights are way too high to provide good light for reading. 2 are on a table behind the couch and match - one is next to my husband's favorite chair and does't match but has very similar colors.

I have a total of 5, plus the one overhead ceiling fan light and the chandelier over the dining room table. Our family room is the family/dining room combo.
On the regular, we use the one floor lamp and the 2 matching candlestick lamps on the buffet.
One of the table lamps is an OTT light and it's used only when one us is reading or needs to see something clearly.
We have a table lamp in the dining room section of the room on a small side table that almost never gets used and I really need to move it to another room. It's my favorite lamp as it's the faux mercury glass, triple spheres stacked and I just had to have this lamp....but, it's really too big for the space and never gets used.
Other than the 2 candlestick lamps on the buffet...none of them are matchy, matchy but they all do go together.

3 in living room. 2 have matching shades. At the time we bought those shades, we only had 2 lamps in there but decided it was still too dark at night so added another lamp. The shade on the last one is a close match.
ETA: None of the lamps themselves are the same.

I have 3 in my living room. 2 match, because they're on the sides of the couch. The other is a standing floor lamp across the room.
I don't have ceiling lights, so lamps it is!

Four. I hate using the overhead lights, especially because they're ceiling fan lights.
Two are a small matching pair on the mantel. They're kind of random. I actually bought them for the bedroom, but we didn't have bedside tables so they ended up on the mantel, and they are nice up there, especially in the winter. One is a giant lamp made from a Japanese vase with a gigantic shade. The last one has a small mica/orange plastic fake mica shade that was supposed to look very Craftsman, like the house, but which I'm over (although the orange mica shade does tone nicely with the woodwork, I just don't like the lamp any more). The three that aren't orange have cream fabric shades that tone with the walls so they are neutral. I'd like to get a nice floor lamp but I haven't found one I love yet. It will also have a cream shade. Our living room has a rather random, cobbled together style - structurally it's run down 1920s elegance, with a dash of mid century modern, hand me down junk, business warehouse piles, dog hair, and a touch of Japanese minimalism. lol.
Another thing - we have all our lamps on timers. They help make the house look lived in even if we're not around (the living room is the front of the house, facing the street) and it's nice and welcoming when we come home. Also, we're lazy. We just adjust the timers periodically during the year as the day length changes. We also have the porch lights on light-sensitive timers so they are on dusk till dawn without any effort from us ever.
