They're going to make a movie in the town where I work, so they held an open call for bit parts and extras. The director went around to the local TV stations and said that they really do have some speaking roles left -- not sure how much I believe that, though. But hey, you can't get into the movie if you don't go out for the cattle call. So I made my hair as big as I could stand it, and I went to a cattle call in a mall. First time in probably 20 years. You think auditions are cruel? Cattle calls are the *worst*. 80% cute young things who believe this is their big break. 15% crazy attention-seeking people. 3% interesting locals. 2% experienced actors who are kicking themselves for not getting their agents to get them a real audition. I don't have an agent, but I still put myself in that last 2%. It was horrid. No wonder I haven't gone to one in 20 years. ... Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!! UPDATE: Just got an email from the production crew!!!! Got a callback for Friday evening!!!!! I'm up for a one-line speaking role!!!! NURSE! But veterinary nurse, so I don't get to take movie star's pulse. (Aw, rats!) (Wait, maybe I can take the dog's pulse...) Can't get into the website that has the sides [pieces of script] for the auditions!!!! Can't breathe!!! Just cussed a whole bunch in the front office while one attorney gaped at me and wondered if I had lost my mind, and then he pointed out that such foul language would be more understandable if I *hadn't* gotten a callback!!!!! I need to sit down.

Good luck! Would love to hear more about it. There's really not a lot to tell. I got there three hours early because I knew it would be a mad house. About an hour and a half before the thing was supposed to open, someone started a line. Ugh. Had to get up from my incredibly uncomfortable seat and get in line. Someone else "organized" the line around a circular area in the mall. But at least I got to sit down again. We waited forever, in the heat, thanks to a skylight in the roof, until finally the Hollywood people came along. We had been told to have headshots and resumes, but they also said to have a piece of paper with name/phone/email written on it big enough to be read in a photograph. A woman waiting with me asked how this was going to go, and I said, "Well, I haven't been to one of these in about 20 years, but it'll probably be, 'Hello,' get your picture taken, g'bye. They're looking for a look, that's all." So as I went through the line, first a young woman took my resume and headshot, and she checked the back of the headshot to make sure my name/phone/email were on it. Then I met the director, who shook my hand, said my name, and said hello. I stupidly didn't say, "Cast me! I'm fun and I'll act the *bleep* out of whatever you want me to do!" I should have said that. I Should Have Said That. Then a young woman at a table asked if I had a piece of paper with name/phone/email, and I said yes and showed it to her. Then she complimented me on my glasses, and I gushed, "Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!" Ugh. Then another guy shook my hand and asked me where I was from. I said the name of my very, *very* small town, and he exclaimed, "Hey! One of our guys has a farm there! We love your town!" Then a guy took my picture. And then it was over. Agony. They're looking for a look. Talent be damned. There were at least 1000 people in line behind me. I was close to the front. I am not sure I would do it again. Still, hope springs eternal.

Dd went to one cattle call last year for Disney and said never again. The call was actually for 3 specific types of dancers. She fit the profile of 2 of those types perfectly (style of dance, height and general appearance). She does what you did- gets there nice and early to get in line. This was NYC so it still wasn't quite early enough for a 9:30am start (she was there by 8am). Waited and waited for her turn, observing the scene- dancers in stage make up, dancers who obviously don't really dance, etc. Finally, she gets into the room and learns they are only looking for one type of dancer- tall, muscular hip hop dancers. Dd is not any of those things. SHe gets through the combinations and sees that those they kept for the next round are all tall, but not necessarily what she would call a good hip hop dancer. Was really all about the look. They all had darker skin tones. Dd is not tall and is as fair as Snow White.

So tell us about your previous acting experiences! (Or as much as you feel comfortable in doing so without revealing too much.) How fun!

Also, why did you make your hair as big as you can stand it? Is it an 80's film?

Wow! I'm feeling pretty lucky. There are a ton of movies and shows that film here in NM, and the casting director posts things like "Here's the look we need - email me a pic, and be available tomorrow." If you fit the look, they'll email you, and you work tomorrow. Boom! I even know a couple of actors and they'll send me stuff if they think it fits.

So tell us about your previous acting experiences! (Or as much as you feel comfortable in doing so without revealing too much.) How fun! I've been acting since I was 9; I've had big roles in small places. I've done one professional play at an Equity theatre in a Southeastern city. (Loved it. Only time I had my own dresser.) (Didn't get enough points to get an Actors Equity card.) In the mid-90's, I did a lot of TV spots (commercials) and a ton of radio. I have done a number of professional regional touring shows -- things like fairy tales adapted for the theatre, which tour elementary schools. (You have to get up early.) I've also done touring shows that we refer to as "traveling drug shows." These are "just say no" plays that are supposed to be cautionary tales. They tour middle and high schools instead of elementary schools. (Those casts are full of people who are currently doing the drugs that they're telling children not to do.) (Actors are disgusting.) (Reminds me of the bit from The Producers: "Actors are not animals!" "Didja ever eat with one?") For the last 12 or 13 years, I've just done the occasional community theatre thing. I'm old. And tired. The great thing about being old and tired is that I no longer have delusions of being the beautiful star of anything. I can go up for awesome granny or kooky aunt. (Kooky aunt is *so* much fun, and ingenues are so freaking boring.) I've been thinking about getting back into the professional side of stuff. There's so much work for character actors. On the other hand -- there are so many character actors! And besides, I love my day job, and my boss is so enthralled by the idea of knowing someone in a TV show/movie, he is very generous about time off if I get something juicy. But I'm not doing any more traveling drug shows. I don't want to have to babysit any more actors through their check-ins with probation officers.

Also, why did you make your hair as big as you can stand it? Is it an 80's film? This is the South. They're probably looking for Southern stereotypes. A lot of Duck Dynasty-looking guys showed up. I bet 4 or 5 of them will get cast just on the quality of their redneckness alone.

Good luck! Would love to hear more about it. Agony. They're looking for a look. Talent be damned. That's always the way - looking for a look. I could never act for so many reasons, and only one is because I couldn't handle the, "too tall, too short, too fat, too thin" rejection. I have several acting acquaintances who do auditions all the time and I admire their ability to not take it personally. Good luck to you!!
