7 days at Universal is way too much. There just isn't that much to do. We did one park for 2 days and then the other for one day. It was enough.

Hubby wouldn't be able to but I probably could. I got Disneyed out last time we had passes for Disneyland and am too old to deal with the lines and crowds lol. I just am over it. Honestly do whatever works for your family. Hubby wants to take DS to Universal here soon.

My kids were about that age when we did an Orlando trip a couple of years ago. We hadn't planned to do Disney at all that trip, but we added a day at Disbey after DD suffered an injury that prevented her from doing any beach or water activities. They much preferred Universal to Disney. The rides at Universal are more teen oriented, and my kids are huge Harry Potter and Superhero freaks.
That said, 7 days is too much for universal. We were there for 2 days and it was more than enough.

I live here Orlando...just a 20 minute drive to WDW...I avoid it like the plague so I say YES!! You can do Orlando without going to Disney. There are plenty of other things to do in/around Orlando. www.traillink.com/trail/west-orange-trail.aspx This is a great way to spend a leisurely day with the family, enjoying some quality time outdoors seeing the "real" Florida through one of the most quaintest little towns with a real Mayberry RFD feel to it...LOL With that being said....on the rare occasions we do go...we just wing it...no planned rides, no planned eating/dining times. It's much more relaxed that way.

Personally, I'd skip US before I skipped WDW, but that's me. If we had the front of line passes for US, I'd plan two days max and the rest at WDW.
For Disney we need at least one day per park, and an extra day for catching up on what we missed. DH, otoh, swears that Epcot can be done in a half day, whereas I could spend two solid days there. Definitely a ymmv issue.
Either way, have fun!
