It's too humid here in the summer and we are prone to popup rain almost every afternoon so they would end up needing to be washed again. Funny isn't it? I live down the road from you and I hang dry everything outside.

Ages ago, when I lived in the UK , I read a tip to leave clothes on your line if you are going on holiday. This was to fool thieves that the house was occupied. I put some old towels etc on my line only to return home to them beautifully folded by my rather prissy neighbour. She took them in when it rained! Bless her heart how very thoughtful of her

Would you believe that I have never had a clothes dryer in my life. I hate them. I have had three dryers dropped off by friends because they think I'm nuts but we had to haul all three to the dump because I just don't need one. For about six months when I was first married I did laundry with a friend and used a dryer. It beat my clothes to death. I hang everything on hangers when they come out of the washing machine. When they are dry they go right into my closet. If I had a dryer it would all lay in a pile after it came out of the dryer. I do a load a day and it works for me. I hang my sheets and towels on the line. Hanging clothes is one of my favorite chores. I love being out in the garden and love the way my sheets smell. I live in So. Cal. and clothes dry in an hour or so for most of the year. I will admit that towels do better in a dryer but I don't care enough to actually use a dryer. Although cost is not the reason I don't have a dryer a side benefit is that my gas bill and electric bills are rarely over 20-25 dollars. I only had one kid so I never had the large amount of laundry that big families have. With a big family I probably would have had to use a dryer. Now my washing machine on the other hand I would never give up. No way am I beating my clothes on a rock.

I live down the road from you and I hang dry everything outside. If I were home during the day, I would probably chance it by getting it hung early in the morning....they would be dry by noon before the humidity and rains kick in. I leave my house by 7/7:30 and don't get home until 6:00 at least 5 days a week...sometimes 6.

femalebusiness-- I hate folding and putting away the clothes but I have always liked hanging clothes on the line, too, for some reason!!

I don't even have a clothes dryer so it is a clothes line all the time for me. Wow, I thought that I was the only person in the world that doesn't have a clothes dryer. We should form a club!

I love hanging laundry out and I agree don't hang your undies. I use one of the type that @dottyscrapper posted.

This is one thing I miss about England, I love seeing lines of laundry, love it. Since moving to CA I have tried to hang things out to dry and although they dry in record speed because of the heat, you really need a good windy day to stop things becoming as stiff as a board. That being said, I do hang our bedding over our deck railing. I love every Sunday night climbing into freshly dried outside bedding. I also have a confession, not do I only love the way the bedding feels, I love the way it smells too - and yes - while I sit in bed reading every now and then I hold up the sheet and sniff it.

Since moving to this house in 2004, it came with the heavy metal 4 line clothes lines. Love it !!! My ds got me a new dryer for Mothers Day. The old one worked ok, but I usually preferred my coveted clothes lines. I'm finding that it's hard for me not to do my laundry based on the weather. I'll probably still use the clothes lines the most.

We use a retractable one. I hung it on a fence post and then I unwind it and secure the other end on another fence post. Love it!! I love clothes that have been dried on the line. We sit at the top of a hill so no one can really see in our yard but I just wouldn't hang my unmentionables outside. Can you maybe just lay those out to dry in your house and then hang the clothes outside? Honestly, growing up we didn't have a dryer and hung all our clothes outside. In the central part of the city where houses are built on top of each other. Everyone could see everything! So we just kept undies and such inside on a foldable clothes rack and everything else went outside.

A good drying day is a thing of great joy to a Brit. We wash everything in sight: strip beds, get old dressing gowns out the cupboard, gather all the bath towels in the house, and set to work. Like the weather here generally, people at bus stops and shops can be heard commenting on what a good drying day it is. I love that

I say to let the undies dry outside! Heck yes! Let people look! LOL. Truly, I don't care if people see my undies. Most people wear them so they also wash them (I hope). No big deal.
My mom dries EVERYTHING on their clothes line. Bras, undies, slips, EVERYTHING. I do NOT miss super stiff jeans, that's for sure. Or scratchy towels. Those two should be dried in a dryer to make them soft. Everything else, I'd LOVE to put on a line.

I love drying clothes outside in the summer. Yes, they might get a bit scratchy and stiff, but they smell so wonderful. Unfortunately, DH was taking a tree down in our backyard and knocked down my clothesline. I've been on him since to get something up. I have sheets and t shirts in the washer right now and I'd love to hang them up on this brilliant sunny day. We live out in the country and so I could go outside wearing only undies to hang up my undies!

Yes, most people hang their laundry outside here unless of course it's raining. I have a rotary line which is great as it spins in the wind, doesn't take up much room and can be folded and covered when not in use. like these I don't use my dryer unless the weather isn't favourable to hang outside. ^^^

I have a 4 line clothes line. However, I can't use it.
When we moved in, I hung most everything out, even the undies. I would hang the undies on the inner 2 lines as to appease my husbands sensibilities. LOL!
Anyway, the ability to hang clothing outside was always limited. I had to be mindful of allergens because of my husband's many allergies. Plus, when the blackberries were on the vine, I didn't dare hang anything out.
A number of years ago, we had boxelder bugs move into the area. They put a stop to hanging clothes on the line. Fortunately, they seem to be less and less every year. They made a terrible mess on the painted portion of our house. Unfortunately, the stink bugs moved in a couple of years ago. They are now the nuisance.
I miss being able to use the clothes line.

This thread is bringing back so many fond - and a few not-so-fond - memories for me. Growing up, we did not have a dryer - we had a permanent "umbrella" style in the backyard. Mom hung almost everything outside - and sometimes things froze. The other option was to hang them inside in the "utility" room where our furnace was, and then everything smelled like oil.
On nice days- oh how wonderful the sheets smelled! Our next-door neighbor also had a line. Many a summer afternoon some combination of me, mom and the neighbor would race outside to bring in everyone's laundry when it started to rain!
My backyard is all fenced in - I just may work on getting a clothes line up - if only just to have the sheets smell so good!

In New Zealand, just about everyone has a clothesline in the garden. Mine is a Hills rotary hoist (Australian brand) like this. It goes into an in-ground socket but can be lifted out if I need to use that area of the garden for entertaining etc.
I only dry things in the dryer when I absolutely have to or if it's pouring with rain. I much prefer to hang things on the line.

My mom was apparently remiss in teaching me one of life's great joys as we have never hung our clothes outside to dry. Actually, I don't think I've ever known anyone that has. Any Texas peas here? Was it common around you?
Now DH and I do have two 3'-4' rods in our laundry room as we hang most of his shirts and many of mine so they won't shrink. He has a really long torso so if his shirts go in the dryer, all 'tall' they are several inches too short in no time.

I can't imagine not hanging clothes out to dry. I only use my dryer for large items like sheets on days like today where it has been raining constantly. Everything else will dry inside on a folding clothes rack which I put beside the ducted heating vent in the spare room.
For me though, one of the greatest joys of the type of clothesline that anniefb posted was swinging on it as a kid. We loved running to get up some speed then lifting our feet and continuing to fly around in a circle.

I have an umbrella type one and love it. Clothes smell so good! Mine is removable, we make sure it's down so the lawn service can do their job unfettered.
It holds a TON Of clothes!

I hang all of my clothes and my kids' clothes to dry. I don't hang them outside because I worry about the direct sunlight fading them. I have two hanging racks (you can buy them at target) in my laundry room for clothes and I have hooks running all along the cabinet doors for underwear. I live in a super sunny place and hang out my clothes most of the year. I don't have any issues with fading, I just hang clothes inside out.

In the UK virtually everyone hangs out washing and it isn't considered an offensive sight in any way, including having undies on display. Contrary to popular belief, and from a lifetime of drying washing in Scotland, sun is definitely not required to dry clothes outside. They'll dry well on a cold, overcast day, so long as there is a bit of a breeze to stir the air. I hang out washing all year round, and a 'good blow' can dry clothes relatively crease free and soft. I also can't imagine anyone in the UK being prohibited from hanging out washing. It's just considered to be such a basic human right, and the expensive non-eco friendly alternative of using a tumble drier is not something the government and local authorities would want to be seen encouraging. Ditto in Australia. It seems so weird to me that people are so funny about hanging underwear out too!

This thread reminds me of a programme featuring Billy Connelly who was telling the story of bringing his Mum over to California to visit and showing her the vista of a wonderful valley with all the other homes basking in the sunshine. "What a shame" says his Mum. "What's a shame?" replied a confused Billy. "Wonderful drying weather and not a clothes line in sight" replied his Mum. He also told the story of bringing his children back to Scotland to visit and when the children got off the plane they asked why the sky was so low? (lots of cloud cover)!

Yes, we have one attached to the wall at the back of the house, so it is out of the way. You can fold it down flush against the wall if you need to.
It would be very unusual for someone NOT to have some kind of clothesline here.

No HOA here. We have one in our yard. I seldom hang clothes on it but it's great for drying out camping gear -- tents, tarps, and sleeping bags when the guys come home from trips. I also have the kids hang their beach towels there if they've been swimming at a friend's house. The towels get washed but if I'm not doing a load that day, I don't want wet towels on the basement floor.
I have one neighbor who hangs her sheets out to dry almost year round. There is something very comforting about that sight. Reminds me of my grandmother and mother doing the same when I was a kid.
I also have several clotheslines in the basement that I use all the time for things that can't go in the dryer and for all that camping gear when it's not practical to hang it outside.

femalebusiness Haha!!! We just might be long lost cousins or something! I get a weird sense of satisfaction to see a sparkly clean sink with no dirty dishes. I actually get a bit twitchy when one of my DS's offer to do the dishes for me. I always wipe down the kitchen bench tops and the stove top and the sink when I have finished.Every single time. They tend to leave suds sitting on and in the sink and crumbs on the bench. I am proud that they want to do it though.
