I scored a mess of books for my kids for the summer for 25 cents a piece, but that's it so far.

**GypsyGirl** Wow, I love that scarf and the buttons and you certainly can't go wrong with Williams Sonoma. What plans do you have for the buttons?
I was overcome by impulsive typewriter weakness. I popped into two estate sales last weekend while walking my dog, and each one had a typewriter with a carrying case being ignored. What could I do but save them? I bought this Royal for $12.50 and a blue Smith Corona for $25.00. Fortunately, my husband was along to help carry. (The Smith Corona is at the typewriter repair store being cleaned and acquiring a PURPLE ribbon, so I don't have a photo.)
I also found a large TG Green mixing bowl at Goodwill for $4.99.
And a groovy Contempo Frost coffee pot for $4.99.
And since everyone I know seems to be having babies, I bought a never-used Stampin' Up set called "Puns from the Past" for $3.99 mainly for this stamp (though I like the others too)

Three flawless Vintage Fiesta mixing bowls at an estate sale.
They were on the bottom shelf of a bookcase. I almost didn't make the effort to squat down, assuming they'd be priced at over $100. Then I had a "But if they knew what they had, these would be displayed prominently" thought...so I squatted, then got on my knees, then bent over...
$15.99!

Oh, @gmcwife1y@gypsygirl, I want to come over and play 'buttons' with you! I have a big box that I've been adding to for years, and every once in a while I like to dump them out and play in them. Those rhinestone buttons are beautiful.
I haven't been to a thrift store in quite a while, but I do still look on Craigslist all the time. I try not to, but I get sucked in. I also get the local estate sales emailed to me every week. I love going through the pictures of what will be being sold so I can decide if I want to trek out to one or not. And I also visit two online auction houses. One has their base facility in San Diego, so I have to go down there to pick up my items, but it is a nice Sunday drive.
The last estate sale I went to I bought a package of miscellaneous pieces of vintage lace. I also picked up a really cute 50s folding card table and chair set with the intention to give them to my niece. Once I got it home and started cleaning it up, I decided to keep it. It is not your typical set, and I know she wouldn't appreciate that. I just wanted to get something for her so I could get back the table and chairs that I lent her before they get ruined.

I have two vintage suitcases full of vintage laces that I use to make fabric/lace journals. Despite this, I feel the need to acquire more vintage lace and fabric whenever I come across it. I never seem to have enough.

I've missed these threads but won't be participating in this one as I have movers coming on Monday to start packing us up to go back to Tampa from Monterey, CA. I have had to really restrain myself the last month or so from buying anything else. Once I'm back in Florida though, it's game on!

Tell me about vintage Fiesta. (I'm not a thrifter, but I could be one day...) Does it say Fiesta underneath it? Vintage Fiesta was made from the 1930s-1970s - six 1930s colors and five 1950s colors. Post86 (1986) has produced about 732 colors. Okay, kidding. A few of the colors can be hard to tell apart without experience. Vintage is lighter (weight) and chips more easily. Post 86 is heavy, bullet-proof and has a much shinier glaze. Vintage usually has a wet foot (the entire bottom of the piece was glazed) and many pieces will have three small unglazed marks on the bottom where the piece rested during glazing. Post 86 usually has a dry foot (the resting rim will be rough and unglazed). There are also style differences, e.g. Vintage tea cups always have ring handles. The markings are confusing. Most, but not all, Vintage is marked. Stamped and embossed marks will ALWAYS say "fiesta" in a lowercase scripty font. Post86 stamped marks are often - but not always - all upper case or have an upper case "F," but there definitely are embossed lower case "fiesta" stamps. P86 pieces often - but not always - have an "H" at the bottom and/or a "TM." If you google, there are many websites and books that explain the differences. Most Vintage is sold by dealers or collectors, so prices are high. It's unusual to find cheap Vintage "in the wild." There's also a disturbing trend now to call - and price - very common P86 pieces as "Vintage" - either because of ignorance or to rip off the customer...or simply because people believe that something made in the 1980s should be considered vintage. Heh. That said, there ARE some discontinued rare P86 colors (Sapphire, Lilac, Chartreuse) that can command high prices. Have I thoroughly confused you?

AmeliaBloomer - What a find! Did you have to stop yourself from doing the happy dance right then and there? When I find a really good deal on something, I really have to control myself! Truth be told, at first I had a little ethical crisis about whether I should tell the seller she had grossly underpriced the bowls! I would never tell a professional estate sale seller (their job is to research, and all of them know Vintage Fiesta), but this was a family selling Auntie's things. But when I looked around and saw all the collectible stuff that the antique dealers were snapping up, I decided I was just happy that I was the first one who spied the bowls down in the shadows! Amazing how a little competition affects my moral compass...

chendra, totally green with envy over that typewriter! Purple ribbon?! What a great idea. Please tell me it's going to be used for scrappy journaling! Y'all have found some AMAZING things. I haven't been out thrifting in awhile. I need to remedy that. DS actually loves coming with me so some day soon when it's 4,422,093 degrees out this summer, we will go as an inside activity.

I found some great finds in my own house! DH and I are doing a major decluttering in anticipation of downsizing in the near future. We packed up a trailer full of stuff for a lady who is going to have a garage sale for us. (They are not allowed in our town). I did some research on some items we wanted to get rid of and was shocked at what some of items were bringing on eBay and other sites. A couple of years' ago, my husband brought home a huge coffee table book. A colleague at my husband's office was retiring and left it behind in his give away pile. My husband is the only one who wanted it. It turns out that ugly book is collectible and recently sold on eBay for $87! That was just one of many pieces of junk that turned out to be a treasure. I can't wait to get this decluttering process over with so that I'll have more space to start cluttering up again!

I think I will buy a green ribbon for the Royal. Our local typewriter repair store/sales store/museum (I'm so glad we still have one) has a variety of ribbon colors available and a selection of beautiful typewriters (I have my eye on a gorgeous purple Royal, but I tell myself I can only buy them if I find inexpensive ones in the wild). I love visiting the shop. It was a father/son/dog business that has been there since the 60's, and now it is just the son and the dog. The shop looks just like you would imagine. I half-jokingly asked if I could be his apprentice.

OH! I forgot to show you this wonder of a machine. I didn't buy it, and in fact, I'm not sure if it was for sale or just on display. It's a Musicwriter--a typewriter that types music! I cannot imagine that it was very efficient. Do you type a note, roll the paper up or down to get the placement correct on the staff, then type the next note, etc? Very tedious, if so. I will have to ask when I go to pick my typewriter up from its detailing. I'm sorry the photo is blurry; I didn't realize it until I left the shop.

My husband is the only one who wanted it. It turns out that ugly book is collectible and recently sold on eBay for $87! Isn't that the truth! Last year I found an old pattern in my sewing room. It was for drafting/designing children's clothing. Another project that never saw the light of day. The original sales slip was in the envelope and I'd paid $4.50 for it around 1990. Listed it on eBay and it sold for $70! Are you planning to list the book yourself, or does this person do that for you as well? Save
She is going to handle the eBay listings for us. She has a marketing strategy which includes listing the items on local boards before she lists them on eBay. We're putting a lot of trust in her, but we've known her husband for thirty years and she recently did this for a friend and the friend was very happy w/ the result, so I hope it works out well. If not, I've at least done a lot of decluttering and can soon start acquiring again.

My husband and I headed out this morning at the crack of dawn with our friends that own the auction house. We hit an annual 44-mile year sale that runs near our town. We had a ball! I picked up a nice little stash of things to add to my Etsy shop. We also bought shelled pecans to put in the freezer for baking projects and a quart of locally gathered/processed honey. We ended at a famous buffet-style barbecue place in the last town and ate waayyyy too much. It was a great morning.

dropped off a good size load of donations at Goodwill this morning and went inside...found 3 chapter books for DD9, 2 books for DH, 4 old (2006-ish) card magazines/books and an old CK scrapbooking book (2004) - they'll be fun to look through and use for inspiration (colours or layout not product use obviously) and for 50cents each...
Went across the parking lot to the Hospice thrift and scored an old handbag...back when I was in jr high school, these Bermuda bags were all the rage...you bought the handles/liner and then buttoned on fabric outers (usually reversible)...for $2, I got one plus 5 different reversible outers. DD16 told me it was hideous but it brought back fond memories so worth $2 to me. Also found a pretty black blouse for her for .49 - can't beat that AND she likes it.
At the flea market - Dh found several books and I picked up a couple as well.

One of my latest and best finds was a Pyrex Golden Hearts 2 1/2 quart casserole dish for 50 cents. When I bought it the woman said 'You know those are collectible don't you?' Ummm, yes I do and thank you very much.
I have several pieces of Pyrex, a couple of Fire King and one vintage piece of Fiesta. I didn't pay much for any of it. One set of Pyrex was given to me after our house fire. The vintage Fiesta piece was given to me by a sister in law when I helped clean out her mother's house after she died.
I also got a metal outdoor plant stand/shelf thing for $2 and a new 4x6 outdoor rug for the patio for $5.

I am part of a Freesale Facebook group where all items are free. I got 2 bags of lightbulbs for my recessed lights in the kitchen and basement. My happy freebie was a ceramic kitchen composter that was brand new from plow and hearth Ceramic ComposterThe guy who gave it to me told me it was a wedding gift but the yellow color doesn't match their kitchen. It doesn't match mine either but I keep it under the sink and put all my veggie scraps and egg shells in it and once a week it gets dumped Into our spinning composter outside. Having it in the kitchen has made me use it and save so much more than before. It has a carbon filter so there is no smell at all.
