If the train ride is the "party", I really hope they've made plans to make this not excruciating for their fellow passengers. Will 8 7 year olds sit quietly and look at the scenery?

The Amtrak ride would make me a lot more comfortable than having another parent drive my kid. I wouldn't describe the situation as dangerous, but I'm not sure I'd find it necessary to have more than four hours of transit for seven-year-olds just to get to a birthday party, and whether or not I would send my kid would depend on how close of a friend this was, whether or not the kid actually wanted to go, and whether or not I had seen the parent react to packs of cranky little kids before.
I probably wouldn't personally go to chaperone. I have other kids, and it likely wouldn't be worth it to spend that much of a weekend day away from them for a birthday party.

I tend to be over protective but I would have allowed that for sure if I knew the parents/chaperones fairly well and trusted them. Even if I weren't sure, if my dd really wanted to go I would have bought my own ticket and gone too.

If it is a group of parents/adults that both my child and I knew well and I trusted, then yes. If it's random classmate from school that I see once in a blue moon, maybe not. I would probably ask more questions before making a decision. I would ask a lot of questions of the parents if I didn't know them well.

Yes, I would let my kids go assuming I knew and trusted the parent throwing the party.
If I was hosting the party, I wouldn't let it bother me that the one mother who won't let her child go. It may be that she is a helicopter mom or she may have had a bad experience on a train or she may feel her child is too immature to handle the experience-who knows.

If I knew the parents probably. I don't see how this is dangerous? Is she worried about a train crash?

No, the party is just not the train ride. The destination is a historic station rented out for cake and ice cream and games. While on the train, they arranged for the boys to get to talk to the conductor, get specials hats and pins, and get to see the locomotive and caboose train. There's a lot planned on the train while they're seated and in the party room at the historic station. Plus all the boys get a custom conductor outfit to wear that she purchased. She contacted Amtrak and they're really going above and beyond to make sure the boys have fun!
She's planned what has the potential to be a great party. We were just surprised at someone saying it was " dangerous "

The moms "dangerous" comment was just super odd to all of us. She knew all of the above details and then some and was adamant this idea was just horrible and she was not putting her kid in danger because other parents plan reckless parties?.. okay then, lol...

I'm going to stretch a little here and sounds like that mom doesn't want to have to come up with a party that compares to this! Heck, now I want to go! I once threw my kids (twins, boy/girl) a survivor challenge birthday party. The parents STILL talk about it! It's been like 3 years! But, I have only these 2 children and when I could do a big combo party, it was easier to go big! I smell parent envy and they are trying to convince their child it's too dangerous to prevent that child from wanting that kind of party!

I would have loved for one of my boys to have been invited for something like that and would buy myself a ticket to join in just to watch the kids enjoyment! (just out of curiosity, which train station are they stopping at?)

It's absolutely stunning inside!

I still think it sounds like an absolutely fun time. I wish someone would invite me to a party like that.

Sounds like a great experience to me. I was an adult before taking my first (and only) train ride. I'm sure the trip will include information about the history of trains and how they have evolved.

It doesn't sound any more dangerous than attending any other birthday party where the parents are not in attendance. Young kids love to ride on a train, well at least mine did. It was a great adventure for them as they didn't do it that often.

Would I? I let my 8 year old take a 2 week long cattle drive down the side of the Sierra Nevada mountains without me and then a few weeks later fly to Space Camp with a change of planes in Atlanta by herself. So yeah, I'm probably the parent that would send her on the train by herself. But I don't think badly of other parents who don't parent the same way I did. Well, this explains a lot! This might be one of the reasons that AN turned into such a smart, capable, independent woman!

I'm not seeing this party as being more dangerous than any other, and in the case of some parties, this one is probably safer!

Maybe she is thinking of those old cars where you are exposed to the outside while going from car to car?? Maybe she is afraid her kid would climb out a window? I tend to overanalyze, and I cannot think of anything inherently dangerous about riding on a train.

Six kids and four adults in an enclosed train car and a party room.... Seems to me the risk level here is pretty low. I would absolutely let my kid go.

Sounds cool. *I* wouldn't worry about *my* 7 year old. My only concern is that it is a loooooong day. 2 hours there, 2 hours back, 2 hours (ish???) at the station. That's a long day, and a long time on the train.

I think this is a really great idea for a party. I would probably go too, but not because I didn't trust the party, but for my own enjoyment
