Back in the 70’s my favorite band was Skyhooks. When I was 11yo I won one of their records in a competition. My favorite song was called “Smut” but I never really understood the lyrics – I just loved the tune. I played the song for my 18yo DD a couple of weeks ago and she was horrified and highly amused at the same time! I cannot believe that my parents let me listen to that record. There was another song on it called “You Just Like Me Coz I’m good In Bed”. My dad freaked out about me listening to that song, clearly he never realised how bad the lyrics were to the other song! This is so wrong and awesome at the same time. Was this an Australian band?

My favourite song as a little kid was Charley Pride's version of 'The Green Grass of Home'--I loved it because the singer was going to get to go home and see everyone he loved and walk around on the green grass. I was probably 18 when I realized that the guy was going to be executed and put beneath the green grass of home

I haven't read the thread yet. Yellow Rose of Texas is what I thought when I read your title.

Summer of '69 had nothing to do with 1969. WHAT?!?!?!? That is seriously news to me. I'm shocked that I never figured that out. In fact, I did the math once and no way was Bryan Adams old enough to be in a band in 1969. You would think I would have pieced it together at that point. Well. I feel like an idiot.

Bryan has told this story many times over the years. Yeah, he was 9 years old during the summer of 1969. No idea how old he was during the summer of '69.

I remember happily singing along to "Semi charmed kind of life" with my 4 teenaged kids, even going twice to see the band, and now, when the song comes on the radio and I hear: "She comes round and she goes down on me"
Or
"Doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break"
I just cringe.
Actually, multiply this scenario about 100 times and that describes the relationship between myself, my kids, and music. I could go on and on.
On the plus side, they really have introduced me to some wonderful music over the years.

This is so wrong and awesome at the same time. Was this an Australian band? Yes it was an Australian band. There were some pretty awesome Aussie bands in my day with questionable lyrics. Jimmy and the Boys, Radiators, INXS etc.

Well I always thought "Afternoon Delight" was about a picnic, fireworks and all. It was more recently that I realized what it was about for real, ha ha. LOL, yeah, that. I was pretty young when that came out, but all that went through my head, was why would you have skyrockets in the daytime? They show up much prettier and brighter when you light it at night.

In the late 90s some friends and I went to see a re-release of "Grease" in the theater--none of us had seen it since we were kids. Let's just say our jaws dropped open about a hundred times during that movie! Esp. during "Greased Lightning!" Then we got creeped out by all the little girls sitting there having a great time! My 13 year old just did the "school version" of the show... WOW is it inappropriate.

Jimmy and the Boys, Radiators, INXS etc. Let's not forget Supernaut with "I Like it Both Ways" I agree, but I never had any issues understanding what those lyrics were though I remember being about 12yo and being upset because my parents wouldn't buy me the Suzi Quatro album because the word "bitch" was in the lyrics. I can't say I can recall any song that I later found out was significantly different to what I first thought. My 13 year old just did the "school version" of the show... WOW is it inappropriate That reminds me, there's a school near me and last year they had a big sign up promoting their junior school play which was "A Streetcar Named Desire" I had to wonder if any of the teachers had actually read this book? Blanche is mentally ill and sleeps with delivery boys and then she's revenge raped her brother in law. Doesn't seem particularly appropriate for 13 & 14 year olds to be acting out.

My daughter's theatre group was thinking about doing Rent.. they range in age from 12 to 16. How could they possibly act that? They need to find things in the characters that are relatable.
