Voting until 11 PM? When I was a Voter Registrant, working from 7 AM to 7 PM was bad enough. Having to be in the courthouse until 11 PM would be horrible. There's no law that says west coast people have to listen to newscasts before voting.

Or maybe people on the west coast should just vote anyway. It's not like it's just one election on the ballot. I'll still vote. I'm just realistic my vote for president will not matter. I have never once, in all the years that I have been voting, been asked a single question as I exit my voting place. Neither has anyone else I know. I was actually asked once as I finished voting. I cannot remember what organization they said they were from. I was honestly annoyed that they were there so I lied on my answers.

I think there was talk of making Election Day a federal holiday that required time off work or something. I thought I saw a blurb about it somewhere. I think we should go back to biblical times - everyone has to go to their place of birth to be counted - you could apply voting rules like a census what if you weren't born in the US?

Well obviously it would be your polling location in this case. In biblical times you had to go to where you were from.....

There are a whole lot more problems with the system than that... but I'm not going to go there.
We don't have that problem in my West Coast state because we are a 100% vote by mail/drop box state. We send in our ballots long before any votes get counted. Maybe we could give the post office something to do and change all states to vote by mail...

So when do they start counting and reporting results? You can register to vote by mail here and have done so for a long time. Polling stations are open from 7am till 10pm if you physically vote in person but the same people covering the stations don't do the whole shift for that time. I appreciate that we're different as far as the time is concerned here though. In a general election the counting doesn't start until all the polling stations are closed and the results for each constituent is announced as each finish their counting. But in the referendum that we will have shortly the counting won't start until all the polling stations are closed irrespective of the number of postal votes and the results won't be announced until all the regional counting offices ( each polling station take the sealed voting boxes to a central counting venue ) have submitted their numbers to the main office. We'll have exit polls predicting the results but they're not totally reliable....they are what they do ..predict the results.

So then as far as the presidential election goes unless you live in California you don't likely hold enough electoral votes for it to matter who you elect.they call the election before you even start the count.

I wouldn't presume that it's like that across the whole country but I have worked on elections in three different constituencies and there was never the option to work part of it, it was always the whole day (which actually means 6am to 11pm for the workers). It's a very long day!!

I love the experience of voting So do I and I have brought my DD along every single time so she will understand how important it is. I know voting by mail is a great option for those who can't get to a polling station but I have this worry that votes can be lost/misplaced/not counted. At least when you put you vote in a box yourself and that box has to be accounted for in the counting process I feel better about the system. Not sure I trust electronic voting either.

As you say it does probably vary from one electoral district to the another.
