If you get the chance try the fried green tomatoes, they are a true southern dish. They should be sliced thin and dredged in flour then fried until golden brown and crisp. Cucumbers are great that way, too.

So it was all low calorie then? I'm not one for big slabs of meat, but my Dad would have LOVED going to a place like this. He was the first person I thought of when I read your post, but unfortunately he's now too unwell to go.

Danger Will Robinson!!! I have to warn you that any chilli that claims to be from Texas will NOT have beans in it. Source: many years living in TX plus attendance at several chillimpiad type events. That being said, I always make chilli at home with beans, so I'm a philistine. The Borracho beans look fabulous but should have a small chunk of bacon in the serving. The tequila marinated shrimp (prawns) look amazing. Damn! Now I'm homesick for Texas....

That sounds amazing Meg. I was reading a review in the Herald Sun yesterday for a bbq place and it got my mouth watering. I think my next trip to Melbourne might involve visiting one of these places. A review for Ike's Rack Shack was in yesterday's Herald Sun. That was the other place we were going to go to, but we decided to wait to take the kids. They'd be dirty if we didn't take them. Let me know when you're down here next, we'll make a date!

That sounds like a great meal. I can't believe how extensive that menu is. About 2-3 times more offering than most BBQ joints I've been to.

Some of the best I have ever gotten is from the guys with a smoker hitched up to his truck on the corner of a busy intersection/parking lot. Or a shack! I swear, sometimes I question the ability of these places to pass the health inspection, but taste seems to be inversely proportional to building structure. If anyone is near Goldsboro NC, there is a "shack" place where I think the floor is still "dirt" Tiny, run down looking place, but oh mama! Good food, better than "Wilber's" which is a larger place, that was once a "shack" too and had good food. Note, "had," it tastes like "restaurant food" (like Famous Dave's or Tony Roma's) not "home-cooked-food" Aussie Meg, What did you decide on having? All of it, and I mean all of that menu sounds so good. I think I will bug DH into BBQ tonight!

I am glad that you had a great meal. Next time, order slaw and fried green tomatoes. They are Southern standards. We even eat our slaw on the bun when we have BBQ pork sandwiches.

Oh, I know what we are having for dinner tomorrow night! The best BBQ I've ever had was at a gas station in San Antonio, TX. I wondered if your stomach could literally explode, we ate so much. We were there for 5 days and sent back twice! Where was it? I'm in SA and always looking for new good food.

We're definitely going out for BBQ sometime this weekend! My mouth is watering.
Here in southern VA, most places give you dry smoked meat and then let you apply your own sauce. Our favorite place has six or seven different sauces at the table, ranging from vinegary to super-sweet. I like it vinegary! With coleslaw!
I'm glad you enjoyed your venture into American cuisine!
