From their own account? I need ones and fives, so the ATM is out. I don't think I've done this in over ten years lol.

I don't know. I never did that. Back before ATMs, I would cash checks at the grocery store. I think you can still do that.

Yes, the bank will do that.

Thanks so much! Two of my kids aren't feeling great, so I'd rather not drag them through the grocery store when we don't really need anything there.

Um - why do you need to write a cheque? Can't you just go to your bank and make a withdrawal and ask for it in ones and fives?

Sure, you can do that! It still works the same way

Um - why do you need to write a cheque? Can't you just go to your bank and make a withdrawal and ask for it in ones and fives? This. I will just go through the drive through teller and give her my debit card for a withdrawal. I don't think I've written a check to withdraw funds in twenty years. And that was at a super small town local bank that didn't have an ATM.

I've written checks for cash at my bank. It's rare but every now and then I misplace my card or my dh accidentally takes it or whatever. It's not a big deal.

I do this to get cash in small bills for the kids allowance a few times a month.

My mom doesn't use the ATM so this is how she gets cash.

I would think it's different depending on the bank. It's been a few years, but last time I needed cash that was over the daily ATM limit, I had to write a check & cash it. That was the bank's policy, they didn't have withdrawal slips to just do a withdrawal.
Since it's been a few years, I don't know if they've changed their method or not.

You don't have to write a check. Banks usually just have withdrawal slips at the drive thru or you can just swipe your bank card at the teller if you go inside.

Sure, you can. At my credit union, we just have a card and you can withdraw cash without actually writing a check.

The few times I've needed to do this I've gone to the teller, swiped my ATM card and requested how I wanted my cash - fives, tens, whatever

Back in the day when I was a teller, a withdrawal slip for a checking account was called a checking debit.

yeah, why do you need a check? if you're going up to a teller, just use your ATM card and a withdrawal slip.

We did for vacation in April, rather than making multiple trips to the ATM because of our daily limit. It was awesome and we'll be doing it that way all the time now.

A couple of months ago I stopped at the bank to get cash and realized I didn't have my ATM card with me but was able to withdraw cash through the teller.
A slight hijack: we were watching Father of the Bride recently and thought it was pretty funny when Steve Martin was in his future in-law's office and saw his bank passbook on the desk. Our teens had no clue what it was and that it would show how rich the guy was.

My husband does all the time and I do once in a while. The bank has an ATM machine but we don't have a card or passcode or anything. I've never used it.

I'll admit, I'm a little baffled at all the people using ATM cards with a teller. Back when I worked at a bank, you would either cash a check or fill out a withdrawal slip. It has been 10 years though, so it sounds like things have changed. I don't visit banks often, clearly.

In front of each teller there is a card swipe/key pad thing like you would see at a store cash register. You can either fill out a traditional withdrawal slip or you can swipe your bank card and enter your PIN like you would when you buy something with a debit card.

Interesting. ..we don't have those at the teller window here. The only place to slide your card is the ATM outside.

I would go into my credit union and say "hi, my name is Mari and my account number is #########. I would like to withdraw a million dollars." And then they would give me money. No check/slip would be needed.

And you can swipe it to do anything....cash checks, withdrawal money in certain bill amounts, or deposit 500 bucks in pennies. Save

Thanks everyone! I got my small bills.
I was using the drive thru (because of the sick kids) and it worked just fine. I did have to give 2 forms of ID, which seemed a little excessive IMO but it kept me from dragging the kids out of the car. I rarely go to the bank anymore at all because we deposit most checks with our phones. It felt very retro haha.

I'm 44 and have never written a check just to get money from my own bank. You just make a withdrawal with your bank card. I have occasionally not had my card on me for whatever reason, and in that instance I use my drivers license.
