To be honest, I wouldn't have given a second thought to there being alligators in that lagoon. I would have assumed it was man made like pretty much the rest of WDW.

According to reports, the father jumped into the lagoon to wrestle the alligator and save his child. Is that enough for you or do you still want to blame the parents? smh and stj I'm not a fan of Rainbow's but this time I think that's a fair question. I wouldn't think for a moment that it was possible to be within easy reach of an alligator on WDW property which is a place for relaxing and enjoyment, especially with children! I didn't know that it was a given that if there's water, there's alligators....especially somewhere like that, rather than a natural body of water. I would also wonder how a child came to be somewhere that an alligator could get to it so easily and that maybe the child had wandered off. An absolutely horrific tragedy for that family

I have been to WDW many times and have never once thought about there being a chance that there would be gators in the waters there.

It is absolutely horrifying for this family. My heart breaks for them. I live in south west Florida, so I am very aware that ANY body of water can have gators. They came and removed a 10 foot alligator from the man made pond behind my house that sits on the golf course. It had lost all fear of people, and had unfortunately come up to the back yard of a neighbor and snatched a small dog. Alligators are very real and dangerous predators. People who don't live here and don't have to deal with this every day would probably not suspect that an alligator could take a child from them while on vacation at the most magical place on earth.

How horrifying I've been very near that lake a couple of times and never would I have expected a gator to come out of the water. Yes, I am aware that gators are out and about, in Florida. But I somehow thought that WDW would have had some kind of " barrier" so they couldn't come into the resort. It seems that is a very naive thought on my part and probably millions of others that visit there each year. I suppose you get into a false sense of safety because it's a man made lake within a "compound". I can't imagine what those parents are going through. Rainbow.....maybe " what happened?" would have been a more appropriate question than " where were the parents?" if you had not read any other reports before reading it on here.

So sad! If you read the Disboards there have been threads showing pictures of alligators in the lagoons/lakes on the property. I think if you look on youtube there is a video of a smaller alligator that was in some water VERY near Splash Mountain. Yup. www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1ZqrnJkQuQ

When we were in Florida, the only tour that mentioned alligators was the one that took us out to the NASA site, saying the alligators were unpaid security guards. When we were in WDW alligators never crossed my mind, I had assumed that it was a fenced, secure and patrolled location.
My heart goes out to those poor parents, I just can't imagine their heartache.

With the ?!? I'm not sure how you could read it as anything other than blame/accusation. Perhaps it's because I look for the good in people first. We'll have to agree to disagree and carry on. Now, I could see if she asked 'Where the hell were the parents?' That would sound a bit more blaming. Oh, well. Same here...I didn't read her post as accusatory - I read it as just a mere question,,,,wondering where they were, how close by, did they witness this, etc. How tragic!! I cannot imagine something like that..how awful. Gators are everywhere in FL and I am sure WDW does its best to keep an eye out and get rid of them but they are pretty fast animals and not always easy to see, especially in the water. Like everyone here though, I would not even be thinking about seeing an alligator at a WDW resort...it just feels like such a safe place, that it wouldn't have occurred to me...even though I have seen many gators in FL. Also, The lagoon at WDW is man-made but it is just like any other lake, man-made or natural...a lake is a lake and the same creatures (gators, snakes, etc) can get in there...fish will only get in there if the lake is stocked (at least once)

For those that don't think there are real gators in WDW, it's Florida. It's pretty safe to assume there are gators in every body of water. Weather it be man made or natural. I once almost ran right up on one on my morning run in my sub division at 6:00 am. We have, as most all sub divisions do here, retention ponds. It's well known that there are several gators that live and travel between them. I just didn't expect to see one in the middle of the road at 6:00 in the morning. My heart just breaks for this family. As for gators everywhere, it said they were from the midwest so maybe they were not aware of that (I wouldn't have given gators a thought if I was there) are there signs somewhere saying that?

Those are nasty bites and if you survive, it can cost about 100k in medical bills.

On our last trip to WDW maybe 3-4 years ago, we saw a little gator swimming around under the bridge where you watch riders come down Splash Mountain. Not in the ride's water features but yes, awfully close. Man made or not, you have to assume they are everywhere. That poor family.

When we stayed at the Polynesian resort which is next to Grand Floridian and also on the Seven Seas Lagoon, there were signs saying to not go in the water and at night when we went down for fireworks viewing, they did not allow anyone closer than about 20 feet from the edge of the water. There were employees manning the beach and if anyone went to dip their toes they were immediately told to back up.

I don't blame the parents or anyone in this situation, but having grown up in central FL, I wonder if the 2 yr old wasn't playing IN the shallow water. Usually when we hear of gators grabbing pets, etc, it's when the dogs go down to splash in the water. I know the reports aren't saying if he was playing on shore or in the water (just that he was dragged INTO the lagoon), but it's possible. Either way, it's summer and there should have been plenty of lifeguards or personnel watching the crowd. Just heartbreaking.

I am sick for these parents. Apparently the mom was with the 2yo and wading in the water and the dad did everything to try to save his son. It actually hurts to write those words.
There were posted "no swimming" signs, but like many other non-Floridians, I would never ever have thought that there were alligators in a Disney resort. NEVER. Disney knows they are there, removes them once they hit around 4 feet long (this one was supposedly bigger), but won't post "There are alligators in these waters" to make visitors be aware?
While I wouldn't swim where it says not to, I probably would wade just like these parents did unless a sign said to not even touch the water.

I'm not from Florida, and it would have never, ever occurred to me that there would be dangerous predators in the water on any property of Disney. I would have assumed, just like every other part of Disney, that it was meticulously sanitized to be incredibly safe. But the tourists don't know that. WDW should have had signs stating in no uncertain terms about the danger. I have no idea if they do have signs (I've only been to WDW once, at 15 yrs old) but if they don't, they absolutely should. My heart hurts so badly for this family. No one would ever expect that their child could be in danger from an alligator at Disney.

I can't ever remember seeing signs about alligators. I can remember that you aren't allowed to swim, there are a few of those. I didn't think that was because of the gators though I thought that be more for the fact of safety from drowning and the lack of lifeguards etc. As you say there's a big difference in swimming and just putting your feet on the edge of the water.

Also, if you ride the monorail around that area and look down, you can often see alligators below if you have a sharp eye. There is simply no way for Disney (or any other landowner) to create a barrier to keep out wildlife. We have many relatives who live in Florida in retirement or gated communities and they ALL have wildlife, including gators. My uncle was sitting in his home office one day, for example, and his Westie went nuts. He looked out the window and there was a bobcat out there. Another relation's neighbor lost her small dog to a gator when she walked it by the man-made lake in their gated community.

I haven't been to Disney for 6-7 years but I have been many times since I was a kid. Disney never made any secret that there was wildlife in the lagoons. In fact they often mention it in the speeches on the PA while you ride in the boat. They'd say things like ' keep a sharp eye out, native Florida wildlife can often be spotted in the seven seas lagoon'.
This is so sad. How horrible.

So heartbreaking. I can't imagine what those parents are going through.

Wow. How horrible.
And disgusting that Disney is so concerned about maintaining its pristine image that it wouldn't post warnings about a known danger.

Alligators are super fast. I was once driving along the turnpike south of Miami and there was an alligator running along the paved shoulder. That sucker was moving at an astounding speed, it looked like it was running on its tiptoes. They are part of Florida life and of course where here first, but they truly sleeve me out and I am cautious around any body of water.

My heart breaks for that family. On the reporting I saw this morning, it said they were a family of five vacationing from Nebraska. I can't imagine the horror and loss they are experiencing.
I hope the City of Orlando is able to recover from these tragic events that have happened in their community. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them.

How absolutely awful. It is true though, if there is a body of fresh water there will be wildlife. In Florida, that means alligators and snakes. It doesn't matter if it is a huge natural lake or a small canal on the side of the road, there will be alligators. One of the big problems is that in places with a lot of people, the alligators learn to associate people with food because there are always yahoos who think that it is cool to feed them. Over time the alligators lose their fear of people, and then tragedy happens. There is no way to keep an alligator out of a body of water. There should be signs that not only say no swimming, but also don't feed them, and to stay out of the shallows too.

I have been in that stretch, and yes, I do remember the No Swimming signs. The news I heard this morning said the child was wading in the water near the beach.
We Floridians know alligators are everywhere. It is their natural habitat. Our subdivision's man-made lakes have several. It's a way of life for us.
But I can see someone from Nebraska not really knowing that, or being aware. It's just horrible.
