I had a filling done then I had pain a while after. Went in for him to check it out. He said we need to do a root canal, let's do it now. I started to cry. Then he said if I could arrange for a ride home they would give me some Ativan. He told the nurse give her 3, the nurse says we usually give 2, he said give her 3. I was feeling NO anxiety! I highly recommend taking something if you're that nervous. It was just longer than a cavity filling and you have to go back more than once.

I hear ya, sister. But it won't be nearly as bad IRL as it is in your mind. Good luck!

They use good drugs...you shouldn't feel or remember a thing.
Sleep dentistry...worth every penny.

I already have a temporary crown they put on today. That's when she took X-rays and basically told me I need a root canal ASAP to save the tooth. This tooth has been causing pain forever and she took pictures of the decay inside of it. It was disgusting. It took three flipping hours today and I'm pretty sure my dentist is out of local ansthetic because it required soooooo much numbing. My dentist said she can do root canals but prefers not to on molars. And this is a molar. I hate going to thbe dentist. I hate no matter how loud my music is that I can still hear the metal equipment doing god knows what to my teeth. I hate the chair. I hate the lights. I hate the smell.... Clearly full of dental hate today. My apologies to all dental peas. Thanks guys. Glad to see so many of you survived. There isn't a lot of drilling with a root canal. They create a hole and then do a lot of digging with a tiny tool. You can't feel the digging. My SIL says she would rather give birth than go to the dentist. We all have out issues!

I've had 5, and to me, they are no big deal. The only crying I do is when I get the bill for the crown which almost always follows a root canal. Yes, exactly!
No pain unless you have an infection, then you will be THRILLED to have the root canal to alleviate the pain.
Most dentists refer their patients to an endodontist now. Even my dentist, the head of the practice, no longer performs root canals.

Mine took a long time (I think it was 3 1 hour sessions?) but the worst pain is the novocaine shot (as is always the case for me). After I got numb it was completely fine. And if your dentist is sending you to an endodontist, they are doing you a huge favor, because they will be more likely to make sure all roots are taken care of and that the root canal is well done - that is their specialty!

I went to my mom's last summer. She was very scared, and asked me to go in and sit with her during the procedure. Other than it being a dentist office (with all the smells and sounds of one), it was totally fine. She was not in any pain or scared, and the doctor and I both kept asking. She hadn't had one in 20 years, and she said that one was incredibly easy. The endodontist agreed that the procedure used to be awful, but modern dentistry has made it pretty much painless. My mom is the most anxious person I've ever met, and she really was fine.

As some have stated prior - dentist sends patients to a specialist.
My dentist said she can do root canals but a specialist has more advanced equipment and does them more often. Therefore, their technique is more refined and they are quicker.

I had my first one back in Nov./Dec. and it wasn't a big deal at all. I do like my nitrous though. I've been more uncomfortable getting crowns. My tooth was a little sore the following day, but it wasn't bad.

root canals these days are not your mamma's root canals. I had one last year and I was shocked at how painless and spit free it was. I couldn't believe how great it went. I was in and out in no time and this was no easy job. a far far from the days when I got my first one but then again, my dentist was awesome and a specialist.

Oh hell, I'd probably cry too. I've never had a root canal and actually never had a bad experience at the dentist... but, those visits still bother me. I would schedule a bunch of pelvic exams before I'd want a root canal.

Ask everyone you know for a really, really good endodontist who ONLY does root canals. I've had two by the greatest guy - this is is whole business. I didn't feel a thing. I was nervous as hell the first time and this guy numbed me so much, I didn't feel one thing. He has a great bedside manner, very jovial and friendly and talks the whole time. It was actually fairly pleasant.

I have a major dental phobia. Last month I had to have a root canal. After working through a panic attack, I made an appointment with a specialist who uses sedation. I took a couple of pills the morning of the appointment. I remember sitting in the chair at 11:00 and then getting up from a nap at 8:00 pm. It was like the work just magically got done.

I'm not a big fan of the dentist, either, but I do go regularly. I had a root canal about 10 years ago (?). It was done by my dentist. I was really nervous because I'd heard all of the horror stories, but it wasn't bad at all. It took longer than just getting a filling, and I had to keep my mouth open longer but he used some sort of jaw propping device so that made it easier. I had no pain afterwards, either.

(((hugs)))) Root canals aren't any worse than getting a filling. They are a PIA because they take longer. And don't worry about crying. You are not alone, if it makes you feel any better. Last time I was at the dentist I cried ugly tears because I was in so much pain, but couldn't afford to have all the work it would take to save the tooth, so had to have it pulled instead. I didn't qualify for the care credit, and the dentist wouldn't take payments. And then I had to go to work 2.5 hours later. That's terrible. I'm so sorry you had that experience.

You are in better hands with an endodontist. They specialize in that and will do it faster and with more comfort.

I can honestly say that they're really not that bad. I have had several over the years. As soon as they give me that pain killing injection I am fine. Believe it or not I even dozed off once when they were doing a root canal!!
I remember that I also cried at the dentist once, and I'm pretty sure it was when I found out I had to have either a root canal or a crown. My grandpa had just died so I was quite emotional. I was really embarrassed because I am usually such a good patient at the dentist.

At the cost of dental procedures these days, you can't be the only one crying. :0
I cried right there in the chair when they told me how much work it would take to save most of my teeth. They gave me medicine for a heart defect that ruined my teeth before they grew in. Now they're down to little nubs, which require crowns over them.
Root canal? No big deal.

I hated when I had to get two root canals done, but it was so much better than the pain I went through prior to going in for them. Good luck. It's not much different than a filling but takes more time.

I had one 6 months ago and it really wasn't a big deal- maybe I was just lucky but I am usually a terrible baby at the dentist and was fine ( very numb for ages though.)

I'm in the process of getting a full set of permanent dentures. Seriously, after 30 of them, I feel like I have enough experience to tell you it will be fine. There shouldn't be pain involved & if there is, stop them & let them know. It does take longer than a filling, obviously, but that should be the extent of it, a little uncomfortable from holding your mouth open.

So sorry. And bummed your dentist doesn't do them! I've had a bunch.
I cried at the dentist's office twice recently. Once at my routine exam when the hygienist discovered a very large pocket next to my last molar on the top on one side. She said "humor me and let me do an xray." This pocket was a 7. The deepest I have ever had before was a 4 and they are usually 2s and maybe 3s. Anyway, she found a huge abscess and a broken tooth. I had no symptoms. This tooth was involved in a bridge replacing a molar I had lost for other reasons many years ago. I was so sad to be losing another tooth. I cried when I learned that first needed to come out as well. I am a baby and a recovering dental phobic.
I have a WONDERFUL endodontist now. She removed the tooth and cleaned up the infection. I still need some work done before the implants can go in. She is so fabulous, she gives you a massage to relax your facial muscles when she finishes!
