I just got the new Cricut Air 2 in the mail the other day. I am dreading setting it up. My last Cricut took several months to get working. For some reason, the Design Space is not my friend. It took me three minutes to hook up my Silhouette when I got it. I have over 135 cartridges, so I am going to learn it.

I haven't logged in since Halloween. I am going to try and cover all points I missed since then so this might be a long post. scrapnnana- Cogratulations on your move. Explore does not work with Gypsy. I wish it did but it is not happening for us Gypsy girls. You will link your Gypsy through Cricut Craft Room. You can not link Gypsy through Design Space. It has to be through Cricut Craft Room. After that your cartridges will be online through Design Space. I am including all the linking information here- us.cricut.com/home/learn/machines/cartridge-linkingI have done this and all my cartridges are in my digital account including George. Little tip do this kind of late at a night when things are quiet. I noticed all the years I have been Cricuting that everything goes askew during business and after dinner hours. Late at a night is quiet and the best time for us Cricut users who have a lot of cartridges to upload. It goes super fast too. Yes, Design Space still sucks and is so basic for us who have advanced die cutting skills. That is the worst part. It is really great for beginners but advanced it is challenging. Everything you are used to doing as basic functions such as checking nodes, doing offsets the function is not available. Welding, slicing and grouping are available. I think Cricut Craft Room is more full featured than Design Space. Save a lot with your projects. To be fair I heard Brother Scan n Cut is challenging for advanced users too. I guess these cloud based die cut software are no frills basic. I do all my designing in Inkscape. No worries about using Adobe Illustrator. You will be fine. Two very important tips. These two tips are the holy grail for Design Space. Save as plain SVG. Do not save as Illustrator SVG, Inkscape SVG or Draw SVG. I got that info from Cricut. Second rule is do not group your SVG's. Keep them ungrouped. This is one of my habits is to group my SVG's. I found out that is a huge NO the hard way using Design Space. If you follow these two rules loading SVG's is very easy and should not be too problematic. I never had any problems since I started doing this. NightOwl is right you can use SCAL to design your files, save as an SVG and then upload to Design Space. I saw it on CraftEdge website the other day. I was looking for info about Scan n Cut since we can use SCAL with Scan n Cut now to convert to their proprietary format. My iPad is slowly dying too. I am thinking of upgrading to the 9inch iPad. I actually do not want to put Design Space on my new iPad. I thought having an iPad would be the new Gypsy for me. I don't even have the Cricut Explore with the bluetooth built in and I haven't bought an adapter. I don't miss it. I did take my old gaming computer to my craft room. That has been very helpful. You all know I love my Aqua Expression since I keep talking about it. The Explore does cut much more accurately than any of the old legacy Cricut's.It is the most accurate cutter I have ever worked with. The close second would be the Cameo. It is all the nicest made cutter I have ever owned. This is a high quality built cutter with a frugal price tag. The things I really love about the Explore is that I can work with all sorts of fonts now. I can Print & Cut my cartridges. Printing and cutting is only 300dpi. Cameo users can go 600 dpi & up. I do like the bleed over registration marks. I think it cuts more accurately for Print & Cut. I did hear that Cameo 3 is doing bleed now too. I work a lot in miniatures. I like to make doll house miniatures. I can make very intricate small detailed cuts with the Explore. I can make tiny snowflakes or trellises. I know that is really not important feature for paper crafting for the most part. I have so many cartridges I have bought over the years to make dolling items with. I can now use them to their full potential. It cuts heavy materials nice. Cons of the Explore. The software is basic and has a lot of issues and you will have to play let's find the best browser. I used Microsoft Edge. Never had any problems. I have used Google Chrome. Never had any problems either. I prefer the Edge for really no reason I guess just personal preference. Firefox does not work at all for me. If we buy files we can not save them to our hard drive like the Cameo. That really is a no go for me. I don't know why I feel that way since I do buy games from Steam and Big Fish. I just think it is because I side eye ProvoCraft hoarding their files like we are going to spread them all over the Internet. I know that is a legitimate concern of theirs and I don't blame them for that attitude. I saw what happened over at pcCrafter. I remember the story of the disgruntled employee who sold Cricut's designs as SVG files. I kind of feel like they are punishing their larger customer base for a few bad apples. Design Space and the time of day. I cut really late at night. That is probably why I don't have issues. I am in there at the time everyone is asleep in North America. I have a powerful gaming computer. I know that is not much of a help. You do want a decent updated computer to run Design Space and that is Mac & PC. ProvoCraft apparently changes requirements quite a bit to run Design Space. I heard Mac users got hit really hard about it a few months ago. Linux users apparently you can use Design Space if you use Ubuntu. I don't have all the specs but I heard talk about it on the Ubuntu forums. The software and online issues does not make the machine a problem to use when I want too. Having to use the Edge and not plug in my Gypsy makes things a bit of a hassle. Uploading SVG's is quick but not as quick as the Cameo. For us that started with cartridges and enjoyed the freedom of no computer that has been lost to us now. I did have a lot of learning curve issues. I set down and read the Design Space manual and played with the software and that helped a lot. Here's the manual- content.cricut.com/b/pdfs/design-space-manual/_dsfull.pdfI know this is long but I hope it helps.

I have had the baby bug, Expression, and an Explore Air and I haven't had any problems with them so I am not totally bashing Cricut, I just wish they would get back to the cute designs they started with. I think a lot of us on here love our Cricut's so much. I never want to bash them either. I get frustrated with them. They get in the worst habits and then it blows up in their face. Their PR department makes me roll my eyes. They act like the PR for celebrities. How they go on the celebrity blog sites and post as regular members taking up for their star when there is a big scandal going on. I think it is pretty hilarious. If ProvoCraft ever goes under their PR department can move to Hollywood. I have only really gotten upset with them once and that was when the lawsuits were going on. Had nothing to do with the lawsuit. They apologized to me. Not I am a sorry apology but a real apology. I started off with the Baby Bug. I had no issues. Went to the Expressions. No issues. I had an Imagine and no issues. I was one of the very few that loved the Imagine. I had a Gypsy when it first came out and no issues. I updated the Gypsy several times too. I think it's because I am tech geek I got lucky. I really want my cute paper piecing designs too. I miss them. I actually do love and design home decor. I do not design home decor on my computer. I seriously doubt it will ever happen. Thanks for the heads up about the Heidi Swapp cartridge. I am really excited Heidi Swapp is coming out with a cartridge. I am just really excited it is a real physical cartridge. Can't wait to see it.

Thank you, Ontario Scrapper and Amayalylac, for answering my many questions with such detail! That helps a great deal!
I was hoping that the Explore would go on sale Black Friday, but Michaels' ad shows it for the same price they are selling it for right now.
After hearing that they are working on a new version of the software that is flash free, I think I will wait. I have only just begun to set up my crafting area. In reality, I probably would not have time to learn how to use a new machine till after Christmas, anyway. Unless I can find a good deal on it, there is no reason to rush into buying it now. Last week I was ready to buy it, but thought I should wait till I got the answers to my questions. Now I am glad I waited because I will have a house full of company for Christmas, and I still have a lot of unpacking and setting up to do prior to guests arriving. After Christmas there will be a flood of new owners trying to access Design Space. I think I'll wait awhile after that, when new owner use dies down, but at some point, I am probably going to buy the Explore. In the meantime, I guess I could download the software and play with it if I have time.
I still love some of the Cricut designs. I also have some of the old PC CDs with clip art that I will never give up.

I really want my cute paper piecing designs too. I got the Explore so I could cut other SVG files and fonts, if I just wanted Cricut designs I wouldn't have upgraded from my Expression because I was always happy using that with my cartridges. I am having a ball finding super cute designs at other places, since I got my Explore I have only used it to cut things I find other places. Although it is a step in the right direction them getting the Heidi Swapp designs.

scrapnnana- I forgot all about the holiday congestion for Cricut's. That is the notoriously worse time for anything with Cricut. I would wait too. That was one of the BIG hesitant reasons last year when I got my Explore. My husband is putting the Explore in the cart and I am thinking do I want to deal with Cricut drama's on Black Friday? Luckily, I had none. Hopefully, they will open a lot more servers. Facebook girls maybe you can nudge them with the idea, lol. Definitely download the software and play with it. You might think it's great or think it's horrible. Least you will have a feel for it when you do get the Explore. I decided to go ahead and get the Scan N' Cut. DH & I will both use that machine. It is just so different than my other cutters. The sewing patterns feature was a big sell for me. I would like a cutter to cut my doll patterns with. My husband wants it for quilting. My thinking is that I will use it a lot for textile work. When I get it I will probably use it for paper crafting, lol. NightOwl- I probably wouldn't have upgraded to the Explore but my Aqua is slowly going. She is hanging on. I got mine for a great deal. I already have a Cameo. I love my Expression. I was using the Expressions with MTC. I have the version before the lawsuit. I love the cute files online too. They are so adorable. You should check out Etsy. Lots of cute SVG patterns. I buy a lot of coloring books too and turn them into cut files. I love to mix & match my Cricut designs with my non Cricut finds. I love that I can use my Ornamental Iron cartridge for example & cut a file at the same time. am cutting a cute file I found of a skunk. Yes, I make some quirky things. That was my one dream for Cricut to allow us to have best of both worlds.

I just wanted to pop in and give an update on my experiences with Chrome and Edge when using my Explore Air. These are things I've discovered, and YMMV.
1. If I'm doing a Print Then Cut, I find that using Edge works very well. When I use Chrome, my machine will not recognize the registration marks, no matter what I do. It used to, but not anymore.
2. For all other projects, I use Chrome.
3. Edge will not allow me to import PNG files into Design Space. I often run into problems with Chrome, but they do eventually show up in my account - usually. Sometimes they take awhile to show up, so I find the process unpleasant. However, the end result is fabulous.
4. I have to remember to check for the free images every week. Sunday I printed and cut the most adorable Christmas images.

They have been testing the new Design Space which is not Flash driven so hopefully it will be an improvement. Oh, thank gosh! Christmas Cricut Gift, lol. I am sooooooo tired of the browser game. I hope it is not going to be one of those long testing periods that they will drag out longer than game developers promised games, lol. I still wish for offline software. I know everything is going cloud base. Even Silhouette is going in that direction. I can still use my Cameo offline. I would pay a fair fee to ProvoCraft if they offered offline software. I know development is expensive and time consuming. Did you all see that Michael's is offering a free cart with the purchase of the pretty blue Explore? I am mad at Michael's right now and their confusing coupon game. They wasted my time tonight, lol. It is a decent deal for those wanting to get the pretty new blue Explore. Just don't use coupons on anything else at their store, lol.

The beta testers are saying DS3 is good. But we were told that about the previous DS versions also!

So lately I have added the carts Best of Pixar, Best of Cricut-Party and Gifting and Quarter Note to my account. Been wanting Quarter Note for ages and jumped on the Black Friday sale Cricut was having. They now allow Canadians to use the free shipping code. So for $138 American dollars I got Quarter Note, Best of Cricut and their pack of 15 blue mats. Those blue mats can be pricey in Canada so was glad to find them having a good sale on the 15 pack also. This way when I am making Thank You Cards for my husband's theatre shows, I can just keep feeding mats in my Explore and later when I have time I can get the the stuff off the mats. I found Best of Pixar from a local Canadian seller who only used it twice and directly in her machine for only $15 Canadian. It's considered Disney brand so I never thought I'd be able to get this cart at a cheap price in Canada. She just wanted to get rid of it so I got lucky! I want to make my own Walle and Eve for my craftroom. I love that movie.

I know when I beta test a program I have to provide my resume. I understand if PC has gone with a professional team & is now doing open beta with normal users. I heard alpha & closed beta are done using PC stars. That is troubling. Waiting for the software. I am still waiting for the extra buttons on my Cricut Expressions. To unlink the carts off my gypsy since they actually gave me a set in stone date for that one, lol. Little secret it has come and gone, ROFL! My Motto with PC now is when it is released then I will believe it. Saves my sanity and not side eye my poor machine that I do like. Seriously I know PC politics are a hobby for some of the girls. I read celeb gossip they love PC politics. No, side eyeing. For me it causes way too much stress and I just wait till it is released and make pretty things while I wait. I do that with gaming companies too. It is almost the same kind of thing. Least we finally got Last Guardian. Yeah! I am looking forward to a more stable version of Design Space. I really loathe the browser game.

I heard alpha & closed beta are done using PC stars. That is troubling. I am leery of the beta testers. I heard they are PC's favorites It is hard to get an honest answer/review because it seems like the Cricut reviewers usually get free stuff, like the Explore reviewers get free machines so they end up with a lot of yes men. The glowing reviews I have read about the new DS were from the Mods of the Facebook group who don't allow any bad comments about ProvoCraft/Cricut but I still am crossing my fingers that it will be better. I was hoping they would make it so you could use it offline.

I recently bought the Explore Air 2 at Michaels. I figured that the price was as good as I was going to get for awhile.
I have not had much time to play with it, unfortunately, and won't really be able to until after the beginning of the new year. However, I did contact Provo Craft about how to get my cartridges that were linked to my Gypsy to my Design Space account. I could not get my Gypsy to turn on, so I ended up photographing all my cartridges and emailing them to the gal at customer service. It took them awhile, but they are there in my Design Space account now. The only ones missing were the 6 Gypsy freebies, but they gave me different freebies, which seem as good or better.
I am no fan of the PC politics, but the customer service rep that I talked to was very helpful, which was a nice change from past experiences. Provo Craft has made some positive changes over the years in response to customer complaints, as well as managing to stay competitive. That is more than I ever would have believed would happen a few years ago.
I think there are some areas where they will not change. Customers will need to decide if any particular issue is something they can live with or not. For example, the crappy Design Space software was reportedly designed by their CEO. I suspect that other than making a non-flash version of the software, it will not improve much. I decided that I could probably live with that because the machine cuts so many materials and has the ability to cut better detail. For the price, it is a really good machine.
Will PC ever have a version of the software that lets you work offline? I doubt it. Even Silhouette is going Cloud based. I kind of understand their reasoning, but I don't have to like it.
I don't know if PC monitors message threads here or not, but hopefully someone will see the concerns over who is doing the beta testing. I think they did finally learn that they can't always take customers for granted the way they used to do.

Night Owl If I was on Facebook I would never join a Cricut forum. It really sounds like a lot of the old members created groups to Cricut politic. Not judging. I know that was a loi of fun in the heyday. I wanted to learn things and create. Plus, I have had enough politics this year to last me a lifetime, ROFL. I am not surprised about the reviewers. That is just becoming an epidemic in so many different areas now. Gaming industry I am looking at you. I know Cameo reviewers are really biased too. I have read some where the reviewer is just INSISTENT that the Cricut can't do something the Cameo can do. If they just changed a setting the Cricut can do that just fine. This is vice versa too. It is very frustrating to make informed purchasing decisions. It does disturb me the mods of these Facebook groups are glowing review the new DS. I really hope there is not going to be a horrible problem with the software. Really, they need to be held as responsible as Provocraft. They are receiving compensation for false or dishonest reviews. scrapnnana I hope your Gypsy didn't suffer the screen death. I agree the PC changes have been positive. Then again it is the same story different year. ! That makes sense why we are stuck with Design Space. The CEO created it! I didn't know that. That solves a lot of unanswered questions for me. I am definitely not happy with the software. We all know this by now, ROFL! It does not stop me from using my machine. I am getting to be a pro at the software. I really do love the machine. I only have two complaints and that is I wish I could print at 600DPI & have some offline functionality that is not tablet specific. One last request (If we got a Cricut rep reading this thread) some more paper piecing files like Create A Critter and those type of designs. I know that really is not a lot PC can control because that is the artists decisions and who wants to work with them. After very many years I ordered Forever Young cartridge. I am really excited about getting it.

One last request (If we got a Cricut rep reading this thread) some more paper piecing files like Create A Critter and those type of designs. I second that, I love the two Create A Critter carts, also Baby Steps I have used a lot (they are both by Nancy Kubo wish they could get her to design more stuff) After very many years I ordered Forever Young cartridge. I am really excited about getting it. I have mulled over buying that one too, it has some cute cuts on it. As for the Cricut Facebook groups... I do like getting info on new things but I don't spend much time on them. I mainly just upvote people's projects but I rarely post. I realized from day one that it was not a place for complaints and I don't view it as a social place for myself.

Night Owl I love fashion. When Forever Young came out you would think I would have had it on the first day. Nope! I waited and waited. There was a lot of Cricut drama back then. I will be the first to admit that I stopped buying cartridges due to the drama. I wasn't sure if my cartridges would be supported. On the Cricut MB it got so dramatic you ask a question about a cartridge and it would turn into a bash fest. I was pretty nervous ordering it this weekend, lol. I am so relieved I got it. I really want to buy the cartridges that were on my Wish List years ago. When I bought Rock Princess years ago I e-mailed one of the higher ups asking if buying cartridges was going to be safe. She said "Good question. Let me talk to the higher ups and I will get back to you!" She really did talk to them. She told me where the direction of the company was going. That never happened, of course because after that PC imploded. I was pretty leery buying Cricut items after that. Took me a long time, years to buy another cartridge. I think I waited at least four years. I always try to be cheeky and funny about my posts. PC can make me mad. I know we all have been there. I know they are a company and they are going to do what they think is successful for them. I as the consumer can take it or leave it. I make a lot of comments about issues with these machines because I know they are expensive. The reviews are so one sided that I hope somebody researching is able to make a good purchasing decision on an unbiased review. I am grateful when I have been able to find those kind of things. That is one of my ways of saying thank you to other people who have helped me save a ton of money and heartache. My other reason I know PC is famed for spying on popular forums. Silhouette does too. It makes good business sense for reps to come on the boards and see what is trendy, what is not working and how to improve. I always hope reiterating things they will take notes and listen to our praise and concerns.

I always hope reiterating things they will take notes and listen to our praise and concerns I have had 3 Cricuts (baby bug, Expression, Explore Air) and been happy with them working well so I did want to say something positive in case they are reading. I am keeping my Expression with cartridges even though I upgraded to the Cricut Air because I don't always want to be connected to a computer. I don't have a separate scrapbook room so I do my stuff at the kitchen table so I put my machines away after I use them.

Cricut Totes and BagsOk, I will be negative. WOW! For that price they better had Kate Spade design those or a Pierre Cardin designer, Tom Ford, Versace, etc, etc, etc..... Except if that was a Versace it would be a lot more expensive. I don't care they are made out of tweed. I can make a bag out of tweed. My positive- They are handsome bags. I bet Cricut men are like "Nice!" I am glad to see that ProvoCraft is catering to more masculine styles. My guy friends ask me to make more things for Cricut items than my girlfriends. I am the only one in my group who crafts. I can definitely see a female market for the bags. The ladies who love classic elegance. I love elegance too. I guess I fall more into the Alexis Carrington elegance. I would need bling.

Otherwise in the other groups you get a ton of crafters saying Oh I have no problems with DS. Um that is so NOT helpful! With the Gypsy if you can't get it to connect to Craft Room to link your carts you will have to call in and they will tell you to take pictures and they will link them for you. You can not link through Design Space with your Gypsy. The Gypsy is no longer supported and no more updates will be done so you can't put on new cartridges. And those new machine bags and rolly thing? REALLY? We are making fun of them in one of my can speak your mind groups. We want a working DS. I have so many Cartridges and they are all linked to my account. They are harder to sell that way. This is why I'm sticking with my Explore for now. I just can't afford to jump ship. And I think they know there are many of us stuck like this. This is why I think they took until the last possible minute to get DS off of Flash dependent. They are getting close to Flash being gone that it's making some crafters twitchy. They have to make DS HTML5 or else we all will have fucking paperweights! Expensive paperwieghts.

The two Facebook groups I am in they seem to make everything with vinyl and I use my Cricut for scrapbooking so I mainly skim through the posts to find out new Cricut information.

I just looked at their new tote bags and gagged at the price! Absolutely ridiculous!
As to the DS upgrade, I'm convinced it will happen. I can't believe they would release the Explore Air 2 and have it become an expensive paperweight almost immediately after. I do think they were stupid to procrastinate so long to fix the flash issue, though. If they don't get the new software right, they stand to lose a lot of very angry customers the way they did following the lawsuit. The software upgrade needs to work well immediately upon release. I just hope they make it better while they are weeding out flash, because it's really pathetic software compared to Silhouette's.

The Gypsy thing- I have no problems with mine. Never had a problem with mine, actually. I learned how to fix it to PC's chagrin, ROFL! All my carts are linked, with no problems to my account. I was being cheeky about the Gypsy and the time frame. I know they spy on us over here. What I was trying to convey is that PC is FAMED for saying they have a time for something to be done and it is never done or five years later done. They think we haven't figured this out yet and some of us have. Two CEO's does not change their policy on blatantly lying about time frames. If it is not blatant lying then I don't know what they think it is. I am sure they do not teach business practices like that at Harvard Business School. My motto with PC is if they say it is going to come out then I just ignore it and don't wait. I will believe it when I see it. When I was over at pcCrafter we all used this software from PC to organize our clip art. We asked for several years if we could have keyword search in this software. Guess what they said "We are working on it." "We are looking into it." "We are listening and will upgrade the software." pcCrafter is no longer and we never got our keyword search. That is the issue with ProvoCraft they have been lying about time frames before the original baby Cricut was on the market. They will NEVER EVER CHANGE! NEVER! It really has been proven to me with a different CEO that they won't change. I know I sound like I am ranting but I am not. It is just fact about their company. Sure it has annoyed me in the past. Now, I am just "I love Cricut designs and the company are jerks." Now, that they are more prominent in various industries the next time they will implode they won't be able to recover so easily or gain trust. They can be sued if they go under and not let us have our files that most of us own. Even when pcCrafter closed we were able to download our files. I will put some trust in ProvoCraft to do that again with our Cricut designs. That was when Jim was a CEO. Who know what this new CEO will do. He seems to be a nice man. I will put some faith in him. HTML5 is not much better. It is better than flash, lol. The new software they are making needs to be akin Cameo's software. I will never understand why PC wants to be the dominant force in the die cutting industry. The one thing they need to do is make a software program that is akin to the others on the market or even more powerful. Instead they gave us a generic broken software to use on their well made machines. It is like buying a Dollar Tree charger to charge up your iPhone 7.

Vinyl is the in thing I noticed in most of my groups. I do see scrapbooking pages in the smaller groups I am in. The bigger ones seem to want a contest who can make the most interesting thing with vinyl lately.

When Design Space first came out I got the feeling they thought crafters just want to do projects that are already done and home decor. Which means they really don't understand their crafters well. DS has been acting up a lot the past few weeks and I've seen posts get by in the big groups. I'm assuming it's because of the large volume of complaints and they can't shut them all down fast enough. Put out a new machine, gain new crafters and oh the server gets overloaded. I normally don't do touch DS around Christmas because I know too many will be using it. But I got a job this past summer and not as much free time. So I got one project done tonight. and now DS is acting up. Sigh.

OntarioScrapper- That is my #1 big gripe about PC that makes me see red. They want to be a cloud based company and they have unstable cloud based software and hardware. WTF? ? I admit that is my BIG PET PEEVE is sloppy hardware/software. I don't care who comes out with it. This is the time I am using my Cricut like crazy. Luckily this year I am not. I just finished a huge room redo last week. My room looks soooo pretty I don't want to play in it, lol. I have been working in my journals instead. I would be furious. Just massively furious if I couldn't get DS to work. I am not mad at them. They are in my DH's words "A sucky company." I just bought Ole this week. I hope I can use it when I go back to my art after the new year, lol. I don't know who came up with the concept that us crafters wanted to do home decor projects or already done projects. I guess he or she never saw the old message board full of beautiful projects that were created from scratch. That did include home decor that wasn't a vinyl squirrel, lol. Remember how the girls use to do quilted pillows with gorgeous flowers? The cakes, oh my gosh the beautiful decorated cakes. Of course there was us paper piecing artists. Nadia was the queen. I know she is into machine embroidery now. I was always awed on a daily basis what we were creating with the Cricut. I am happy for the vinyl girls. It is their time. It must be a relief for a lot who wanted to get into vinyl and PC made that easy for them to learn. I don't think they forgot us crafters. What I heard is they wanted us gone and a new breed of crafters. I guess we were drama queens because we called them on their bad behavior, lol.

I got the Olè cartridge in. I made sure I put the è in this time when I wrote it. I love it so much. I am so happy with it. I have a billion ideas for that cartridge. I did use Design Space. It was quiet and I had no issues. It was fast for me. I am using Edge browser. I wanted to post in case we have some new Cricut Explore users who got a machine for Christmas. I am not in any of the Cricut know circles. That is my personal experience that DS seems more steady. I think they fixed some of the server issues. I just ordered Damask Decor. I am really excited about getting that cartridge. I have wanted it for a long time.
