My new Cricut Explore Air is under the Christmas tree. I know nothing about DS or SCAL, or the Gypsy, or Craft Room. I'm jumping from a Cricut Create, with about 13 cartridges, to the Explore Air. Mainly, I want to be able to cut titles like this: www.ebay.com/itm/Merry-Christmas-Scrapbook-Title-Premade-Paper-Piecing-/332056521745?hash=item4d501c6c11:g:nSUAAOSwo4pYSKVsI am not interested in cutting anything other than paper, for scrapbook pages. Am I getting the right machine? Some of the carts I have may have been linked to a gypsy before I bought them, I thought I was going to sell my Create, but it looks like I should keep it. That is one of the reasons I got the Explore over the Cameo, I thought I was going to have one less machine to keep up with. Do you have to pay to get DS?

karensay and all our new Cricut girls. I know I grumble funny things about the Cricut machines all the time. I akin it to lovingly teasing our favorite pet peeve celebrity, lol. The Cricut is a good machine. She cuts beautifully. The machine is so well made. It is just a fun machine to have in your toolbox. Design Space is 100% free. The only thing Design Space has for sale are Cricut designs and they have a subscription to their library. You do not have to pay to use the software. My only problem with the machine is that Design Space is completely tied to the Internet. If you don't have a good Internet provider then this is not the machine for you. This is where you start looking at the other big two like Brother Scan n Cut or Cameo 3. Both of these machines offer Internet (Cloud) and Offline cutting capabilities. There are other machines on the market but I am only going to mention Brother and Cameo since I know the other machines are not talked about very often and can be overwhelming if your new or have very limited experience with a die cutter. My other things about Cricut are peeves. They are just peeves and I don't find them actual problems. My peeves are Design Space is basic. This is a great thing if your just learning. It is a learning curve if your advanced. I can run Design Space very well now. Anything I need to do advanced I do this in Inkscape. Of course I can't do advanced with Cricut designs I purchased. It is workable and hopefully ProvoCraft in the future will advance the software. Yes, I know I say it all the time the software does annoy me to no end. I work with a lot of software and do a lot of testing. I have super high standards. I can list things that drive me crazy about the Cameo software too, lol. Cricut does win the award of I will never understand how they think when they design things category. My other peeve is I can't save my files to hard drive. I am still buying Cricut cartridges. That's ok. I want a hard copy of my files. Some people don't want that kind of clutter. I definitely understand that. I will buy files from Silhouette Cameo's store. I have never bought a file from Cricut's digital store. I doubt I ever will because I can't save it. ProvoCraft not allowing this is just not giving them more sales revenue. Maybe they will change it in the future. There you have it a great machine. One big major problem and two small pet peeves. No, you did not make a mistake unless you are still on AOL dial-up or live in an area with terrible Internet. The majority of my die cutting work is paper piecing. I will always, always love the Cricut for paper piecing. I don't think any other machine could replace the Cricut for me in terms of paper piecing. I don't just use Cricut's files. I make my own paper piecing files. Go to Cricut Craft Room also free. Load your cartridges through Cricut Craft Room using your Gypsy. It is quick and easy. They will be linked to your Cricut account. You can then use them in Design Space. If you have trouble ProvoCraft allows you to take a photograph of your carts and they will link them for you. You only have 13 carts so I don't think you will have any trouble. I linked my Gypsy through Cricut Craft Room and I had over 80 cartridges then and I had no trouble. I hope that helps. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukah to everyone. To the girls who don't celebrate or are waiting for Orthodox (me) I hope your day is lovely and blessed.

I don't have a Gypsy, and I bought all of my carts thru Ebay, and I think most may already be linked, but I am not sure. I don't plan to take my Explore traveling.
I have Time/Warner Cable Internet, so, it's the best available where I am located.
I know nothing about .svg files. But I don't plan to buy any from Cricut.
It will be fun to be able to use online fonts. I have been wanting QK Eliza Mini for a while and not been able to afford it. I think there is somewhere that I can find a similar font.

Try your carts in your new Explore to link them through the DS. If they don't work call Cricut on Tuesday or email them and they might be able to help you link the rest of your carts. Time Warner Cable will run DS just fine. No problems there. I love to cut fonts from the Explore. I have a Cameo and various Cricuts over the years. I hardly ever cut fonts, titles or anything like that with those machines. When I got my Explore I started cutting out titles. Weird, huh? I updated my wish list of Cricut carts for carts that had cool titles. I do love working with fonts using Design Space. It is simple. I also love the writing feature. I have been geeking out about that feature a lot. I don't even have the dual head Cricut Explore. Did anyone get anything Cricut for Christmas? I don't open presents on X-mas day. I have to wait two weeks. I am getting Damask Decor. I am finishing my Wish List of cartridges.

OntarioScrapper - That is my #1 big gripe about PC that makes me see red. They want to be a cloud based company and they have unstable cloud based software and hardware. WTF? ? I admit that is my BIG PET PEEVE is sloppy hardware/software. I don't care who comes out with it. This is the time I am using my Cricut like crazy. Luckily this year I am not. I just finished a huge room redo last week. My room looks soooo pretty I don't want to play in it, lol. I have been working in my journals instead. I would be furious. Just massively furious if I couldn't get DS to work. I am not mad at them. They are in my DH's words "A sucky company." I just bought Ole this week. I hope I can use it when I go back to my art after the new year, lol. I don't know who came up with the concept that us crafters wanted to do home decor projects or already done projects. I guess he or she never saw the old message board full of beautiful projects that were created from scratch. That did include home decor that wasn't a vinyl squirrel, lol. Remember how the girls use to do quilted pillows with gorgeous flowers? The cakes, oh my gosh the beautiful decorated cakes. Of course there was us paper piecing artists. Nadia was the queen. I know she is into machine embroidery now. I was always awed on a daily basis what we were creating with the Cricut. I am happy for the vinyl girls. It is their time. It must be a relief for a lot who wanted to get into vinyl and PC made that easy for them to learn. I don't think they forgot us crafters. What I heard is they wanted us gone and a new breed of crafters. I guess we were drama queens because we called them on their bad behavior, lol. One of their problems is the servers get overloaded when a new machine comes out and holidays like Christmas are coming. They need a freaking bigger server which would help some! I think they were looking at trends when they first put out the Explore and DS. Trends make money. They probably thought everyone is too busy to sit down and actually want to do complicated designs. This would explain why DS has problems with complicated designs. I have had to take big projects and put them in several files otherwise DS would throw a fit at me! I look at their predesigned stuff and just don't care. Also now you really need to subscribe to their subscription to actually use most of those predesigned projects. I don't like the search function on DS. It's set to include everything and you can't make it default to just your images everytime you want to find something. It's all about advertising! And if it wasn't cloud base, it would be harder to advertise. I was in some of my FB groups last night and crafters were showing off those new expansive totes from Cricut! Look how pretty they are. Ugh. At that price they better last forever! I couldn't finish a Christmas gift in time because the DS severs were being overloaded. So my friend will have to get her gift late.

That is one of the reasons I got the Explore over the Cameo, I thought I was going to have one less machine to keep up with. Do you have to pay to get DS? Congrats on your new machine! I started with the Create and then went to the Expression 2 and now have the first edition of the Explore for about 2 years. If you are mostly going to be cutting paper, get the blue mats. The newer green mats I find are really sticky. You can pat them down with your hands though before first using them to get rid of some of the stickiness. I tried a blue mat and the difference is better. My paper doesn't curl as much when getting stuff off and I find my vinyl comes off better! I ended up buying a 15 pack of blue mats during a Cricut sale and since they now offer free shipping to Canada I jumped on it! Those blue mats can be around $20 each Canadian and I got 15 for $75 Canadian! Awesome when you saw money. When I am making cards I can now use several mats and get things cut out to take to the tv room and watch something as I get everything off the mats. You can use DS for free. If you want access to their library of Cartridges, you can buy a subscription monthly or get a discount and prepay for a year. Any of the liscensed images like Disney though are not available. Usually you get some free time when buying an Explore. Mine came with a 3 month free sub. However I have so many cartridges that I decided not to subscribe. Some of the newer cartridges come with a code for 72 hours free sub. I save those for when there is something I need for a project. DS does have some writing fonts in their sub. (some of the fonts that I own also can be written with a pen). I do love the writing feature of the Explore and have used it a lot. I used Craft Room with my other machines so had already been linking cartridges from my Gypsy to CR. You can't use the Gypsy with DS but anything linked thru CR shows up in DS. There are a few cartridges though like "George" that won't show up in DS so you have to get Cricut to do it for you. So just make sure all your cartridges are linked! You use the same log in for both programs. There are lots of freebies on the internet of SVGs that you can upload in DS. Other files like PNGs and JPEGs can also be used. When I needed Steam Punk images for a box card, I grabbed images off of google, uploaded them and used the Print then Cut feature. Saved me have having to use one of my time limited coupons for DS to access their Steam Punk images.

OntarioScrapper I really do hope the girls love their new totes. I hope they last forever too. I got Damask Decor in. I loved it. I did try to link my new cartridges last night and had some errors. I read the help file and then felt stupid. User error. You know restarting your computer fixes so many issues, lol. I did get annoyed because the message kept telling me to call Cricut Customer Support. No, thank you! Rather pull out my fingernails and call them. I rather call my cable company. I wish they would put a link to the help file and then a call customer service message in the help file if the issue is not resolved. I am not complaining. I know they read over here. I am adding a suggestion. I am not on Facebook. I will never get on Facebook. Where does everyone go that is not on FB for new Cricut news? I want to find the information for new cartridge or design releases? I want more cartridges.

Some of the big cricut ladies have blogs still.

Anyone who is on Facebook, the great group I am in for Cricut users is not secret anymore. Search for Cricut Misfits. If you have problems with Design Space they won't boot you out! Though bad language is allowed so if that makes you faint, you may not want to join, This awesome cricut group shares projects and you are allowed to rant if it's beyond your control to get a project done

OntarioScrapper - Is Cricut trying to be only a Facebook company now? Is it that is where all the Cricut fans are hanging out? I love my blogs but I haven't found a lot of Cricut girls doing blogs. I should say the ones that I would be drawn to read. I know there are a lot of cute Cricut blogs right now. The ones I seem to be drawn too are the smaller ones and the girls are still using the legacy machines. Speaking of legacy machines did the E2 cut well? How does it compare to the Explore? I am looking for one of the legacy machines as a backup when Design Space is down. I am pretty sure this time my Expression is on her last legs. Can anybody give me some tips on how to cut out the Disney Princesses eyes? I cut the Sleeping Beauty file. I did cut it large. Her eyes will not cut. It is driving me crazy. I really don't want to hand cut out her eyes. It is starting to look like I will need too. Yes, I did use the Explore to cut her out.

I really don't want to hand cut out her eyes. It is starting to look like I will need too. Yes, I did use the Explore to cut her out. FB seems to be the place to hang out if you want to know all about Cricuting. Their own forums died a long time ago and they finally got rid of them. FB is fast pace so I think that's why many hang out there. Also Youtube videos are popular. Just stay away from Melody Lane ones if you find her voice irrating. Though for me that was the start of my problem with her (she does a lot of Cricut stuff and it looks like she is one of their spokespersons with the way she pushes the Cricut products). She sometimes does NOT check out what she is showing in the videos before hand. So she will have a video that you think you will learn a certain thing but oops, not set up for that! She also will not always stick to the topic on hand. I like ScrappyDIVA Crafting Tutorials (she does other cutting machines also, and she's Canadian if any Canadians are interested), and Lorrie Nunemaker for Cricut related stuff. My E2 could not cut a circle properly to save it's life! Otherwise it was a pretty good machine. The Explore cuts wonderfully for me and I haven't touched my E2 in ages. Though yes it is a good backup! Problem is though you can't used Craft Room Designs with Design Space. All the time that I used Craft Room I never experienced the down times that DS has had. Though the E2 is a standalone machine that it's good for a backup if the internet isn't working well either. (I live out in a rural area in a small town so that's why I haven't sold my E2 yet) I have not tried cutting the Disney Princesses yet with the Explore. But I know with the E2, it wouldn't cut them right. I know there have been crafters who have posted pics of actually having those eyes cut out on their Explore. Though I believe they had to cut the princesses out bigger than they wanted to. Maybe try a bigger size? I have cut small designs with the Explore with no problem. It could also be your settings. Put the Explore dial on Custom and see what is there. Sometimes you have to play with settings. Like not every Vinyl actually cuts on Vinyl settings. Some you have to go into Custom and pick Washi tape.

OntarioScrapper What I am understanding is that your saying FB is the go to place for everything Cricut? I have asked and looked several times where is ProvoCraft's official areas for news? Cricut only has one official place for Cricut news and that is FB? They do not have a blog, Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram or other social media to provide news of machines, cartridge releases or new items in their digi stores? I am sorry I can't with that. Silhouette several different sources for news. ProvoCraft wants to be a mass produced plotter for the general market but only have an elitist group for their customer base. What they are saying is buy our machine but only if you are in our special group? Isn't that what they created the Circle for? Cons- No offline software. Basic online software that is glitchy or has server issues. No social media sites to promote their company and reach a wide range of audience. No way to backup your digital files you purchase from their store. There are a lot of Pro's to the machines. I do mean that truly. I do think it is a beautiful machine. They do have a great help file on their site. There are so many good machines on the market who have offline software, lots of social media sites to provide news, updates and help. I guess ProvoCraft only wants a certain group to give them money and support their company. Thank you for the help. I am thinking of getting rid of my Explore. I do love the cartridge designs. I am not going to join one social media site for a silly machine when there are so many great machines on the market that cater to their customers needs. The Cameo is excellent & Scan n Cut. Even the Zing who does not have a large social media background still tries to reach a wide audience of customer base & actually treats you nicely and not like you should be honored your using their machine. I know guys I sound upset. I really am. I truly wanted to give ProvoCraft my money. I was looking to upgrade and buy more cartridges. I guess they don't want that unless I join Facebook. I will give Silhouette my money instead. Tax time is coming up. I know there will be people looking to buy a cutter or upgrade. I know many will see this thread. I am telling you all don't ever buy a cutter when all you hear is if you want to be "IN THE KNOW" is join Facebook. A company that wants your money and for you to be "IN THE KNOW" will reach you through a wide range of sources.

I have all 3 machines because I bought the E2 as a backup for my Expression, and I recently bought the Explore. I have never tried to cut Disney Princess eyes, but sometimes the card stock you use can make a difference as to whether the details cut well. Not always, though.

Thank you for the help NightNurse. I really, really, really do appreciate it. I did try the Print & Cut method. I am either missing a step or the file is not correct. Her eyes still cut out and it was all choppy. I am trying to cut Aurora the standing pose. She is at 7-inches so it should be fine. I do think I am missing a step. Yes, I am frustrated and tired of Disney Princesses, lol. What is sad I never had this problem with this cartridge before even on the Baby Cricut. This is my first time I have cut this Aurora file.

I am thinking of getting the Mini to use with my Gypsy. I like to take my Cricut with me to my gaming groups to create scenes when we are gaming. I really do not want to haul my Explore around. Plus, I do want an offline machine. We had a big winter storm in my area this weekend. My cable was going in and out. It was not too bad but you can imagine if I was using Design Space at the time I would have had all sorts of issues. I did try three different cardstock weights for her eyes. I tried custom settings. Above in Night Nurse's post I wrote I tried Print & Cut it is still wonky. I do think I missed a print & cut step even though I was hugging the help file at the time. What is sad about this Aurora drama is that her lips cut perfectly. Those little tiny lips were perfection but her eyes were trashed. Everything else cut out beautifully. I bought the Best of Disney cartridge when all this drama started. Now, you all know I am side eyeing that cartridge, lol. I want the one with Merida from Brave too. I just can imagine what a nightmare that will be.

If you're doing print and cut, the eyes shouldn't cut out. It really does look amazing when it works! You have to flatten the image, then print and cut, so your printer prints the princess, your cricut cuts around her. She will be all colors but flat and one dimensional, so then I go back in, unflatten my image, hide the face pieces and skin, and cut the hair and clothes so I can layer them. I love my cricut but sometimes I want to kick it across the room! I know it can be frustrating and even if you're doing everything right, it can glitch, but if the eyes are cutting on a print and cut, there is some fixable problem somewhere. I'd be happy to try to walk you through it f you want to keep trying, but I totally get it if you've had enough frustration.

I know it can be frustrating and even if you're doing everything right, it can glitch, but if the eyes are cutting on a print and cut, there is some fixable problem somewhere. I'd be happy to try to walk you through it f you want to keep trying, but I totally get it if you've had enough frustration. nightnurse- Thank you so much. You are helping. I really need this file. I did flatten the image. It cut the image around her face. The eyes were cut out. I am thinking What The? ? I have turned other files into Print & Cuts with no problems. I am truly flummoxed and frustrated. I am thinking maybe I should have cut the whole file as Print & Cut. I did flatten some of the layers but hid her body and clothes. I have done this before on other cuts and it worked fine. Maybe, the Disney Princesses are different? My first thought was User Error. Tried again. Looked at the file and it looks fine. Did it again and again. Print & Cut her like six times. The same thing over and over again. I am all for taking credit if I have done something wrong. I do think maybe I am stressed out and missing a step. I did look at the file closely and I see some errors. I am wondering if PC uploaded it wrong. I have found a couple other files that do not match the original ones from our cartridge. I am not blaming PC. I know it happens. I have really great funny stories about bad files from the Silhouette store. Next week I am going to try cutting Aurora again. Hopefully, it will be user error and I missed something. scrapaddie- I love my Gypsy too. I wish PC would understand that still a large majority of their customer base needs offline options too. I am trying to be gracious about the online. I do understand a large majority of their customer base needs online too. My area of town Internet is expensive and spotty. I am blessed to have good Internet but I do pay a high price for it. My WalMart the majority of customers return their Explore's because it is online. I am planning to get a Scan n Cut in the next few weeks. My DH asked me this weekend if the Scan n Cut was online? I said it does have cloud based software but you can use the machine with SD Cards and you can also use SCAL. Scan n Cut users have options. I know PC will never ever never ever allow third party use, understandably, but options in their software would be nice.

I love my Gypsy, too. I thought it had died, but thankfully it seems to still work. I really don't understand why they don't offer a new version of the Gypsy, or at least an option for their software to be used offline, although I think someone said that an offline version of the software is coming eventually. I understand that cloud based software does have advantages. But sometimes we just need to have the ability to work without having to use the internet. When we first moved to our new home in late September, internet issues were a huge problem. When will PC understand that some customers really need or prefer offline ability?

Cricut is on Twitter and Instagram but I don't follow them on there that closely, I still find out most info from their e-mails. Thank you so much! That makes me feel a lot better. If I heard FB one more time I was going to scream. No offense to you OntarioScrapper . I know your trying to help. I appreciate it. I do keep hearing FB from other Cricut users too. I did search for Instagram but I guess I missed it. How do you get the e-mails? I am signed up for the e-mails and I am not receiving them. No, they are not in my Spam folder. None taken. I acutally don't use twitter or instagram. I do get their e-mails but usually find out info faster on FB for some reason. I don't think I get all the emails though because they are not many sent to me!

My hack for the princesses, especially if I want them small: print then cut, then unflatten and cut your layers. That way, you get the dimensional look but don't have to cut the tiny eyes. That's odd. 7 inches should be big enough for those tiny eyes. Maybe your machine needs to be recalibrated? And no, I'm not sure how that works. May be settings in Design Space for it. I just remember doing it when I first got my Explore. Some users have had to recalibrate later on.

The CEO has posted on FB that they Gypsy is a dead technology. They are only now contracting on Craftroom and Design Space. He has also stated that Design Space will never be off line. If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod you can use the new off line feature there. Though you need to download what you are going to use FIRST. Then you can use it off line. I think they thought this would be a happy medium but good gravey! I am not a good enough planner for that! Besides I only have an iPod and that screen is smaller than my Gypsy which I stopped using because my eyes are getting old. I saw a video with the Cameo 3 recently. If I wasn't so invested Cartridge wise with Cricut, I might jump ship! It's harder to sell linked cartridges. Especially now that Cricut is putting most of their efforts into the Explore line and online software where you have to have linked carts and you can't unlink them to sell. At some point they will stop supporting the older machines like they have the Gypsy and their first software.

Ontario Scrapper, don't feel too bad about not having the Cameo 3. A lot of Cameo 3 owners reportedly have not been able to get the Bluetooth technology to work.
I have an iPad, but I don't plan ahead enough to download something first, either. I am disappointed that the CEO is unwilling to ever allow offline software use.
I really need to start playing with my Explore now that Christmas is over.

Update on file- It is user error and I am not trying to pass the blame but I do think it is part of PC's error too. To do the Print & Cut layering I will have to cut only a few pieces of the skin and a very large black background. I keep thinking of all the wasted ink. I have plenty of ink but my file is 7-inches in height. That is a lot of black ink. I think I will pass on this file and call it a Fail. I would have drawn her face in. I was going for a different look. I can draw Disney Princesses. I just might do that instead. Why I think it's PC's error. I was looking at the other Aurora files. They are all different in the face, even the ones that are similar. Each file has a small shift in layers that if you Print & Cut it will still look wonky. OntarioScrapper- That is disturbing news. I had one of the power ups tell me they were working on offline software. I didn't really trust it. When the CEO says we will never have offline software then that is final for me. I did buy the machine with a bit of good faith that we would have offline software. This is my fault. I should have never fell for the power ups words. You know fool me once shame on them. Fool me twice shame on me. I have been fooled six times now. I am pretty ashamed. Cartridge investment topic. I told my DH this evening that I am finally admitting the Explore was a bad purchase for me. I do think it is a good purchase for a lot of people. Not for me. I told him I felt bad about it. He was like "Why do you feel bad? You learned something." He pointed to a bunch of his games and said they were not a good purchase either. He doesn't feel bad about it. He learned something. Even though I feel like he's regretting the Xbox now. Especially when it came out that Crackdown 3 will be 2018 release date or possibly cancelled. That is what game #3 exclusive from Xbox that could have a cancellation? Motto- Don't feel bad girls about our machines. It happens to our guys too. I am going to upgrade to a Brother Scan n Cut. I love my Cricut designs. It is not the investment for me but I do love a lot of the files. I will use the Cricut for very specific files. I am thinking of getting a Mini to use with my Gypsy. Truth be told that is what I should have done in the first place when I was upgrading. I thought the Mini I had to use Cricut Craft Room. Another user error, lol.
