Ok, today I've been busy putting layouts away and labeling albums. And I'm kinda torn as to how to organize my layouts in said albums. Now, I'm not a chronological scrapbooker, I'm all over the place scrapping what I feel like.
I already have albums dedicated to each of my 3 children individually, I have Disney trips and other big trips in their own albums. Christmas also has its albums. Now I'm stuck with the random layouts. I've thought I would employ Stacy Julian's library method, with albums such as the places we go, things we do, all about us.... but then I get caught up on where certain layouts should go!!
The places we go are about short trips, nothing that would need a whole album, such as a day fishing trip, Etc. But what about a trip to the local County Fair? Would that be places we go, or things we do? We go every year.
And also what about holidays? All in one album? See how this has me all worked up?! LOL!
I want to be able to label my albums and just slip each layout into the album under the category that it fits in.
So can you help a girl out and let me know how you organize your albums if you don't do it chronologically??

I don't necessarily scrapbook chronologically but with a few exceptions - I organise my albums chronologically.
But I think if you want to follow Stacy Julian's method - then you need to label albums and just go with what feels right to you.
I would say that the fishing trip would be in 'places you go' - the county fair would be too unless you exhibit, then it might 'things you do'. I think consistency is more important than perfection though - the idea is to be able to find those photos/layouts later so think about how you'll look for them.
Holidays? If I were to divide mine out - I would probably do it by holiday (Easter album, Halloween album, Christmas album) or by season (Spring holidays, Winter holidays, Summer holidays, Autumn holidays.

Just had to comment on this one! I employed Stacy's method 10 years ago and regretted it ever since. It just didn't work for my brain and my family didn't know where to look for layouts. Just too all over the place! Two weeks ago I started dismantling all those albums and sorting the pages chronologically. I just finished 2 nights ago. At least 400 pages and now I'm finally content. Take that for what it's worth to you...just my opinion!

So I guess I also have to add.... I've been scrapbooking for 19 years and I have arranged and rearranged my albums so many times it makes my head spin!! I've done chronological and didn't like it. I'm hoping to get this done and leave it like this for good!

I don't always scrap in order, but I file my pages chronologically, and arrange the albums that way as well. I tend to remember things by WHEN they happened.
Do you date the events and trips and activities you scrapbook? In a "Places we Go" album, would the pages go into it in chronological or random order (or the order in which you scrapped them?). Or all the fishing together, all the fair pages, etc?

I have what I guess is a Library of Memories type method, but my categories are all my own. I scrap all over the place but file chronologically within albums.
My main album categories (using colour coded albums) are Travel, People, and Daily Life. Within travel I include anything from day trips to long vacations. I have specific albums for some vacations, everything else is mixed in chronologically in others. The people category is split between family albums and friends albums - I don't do anything more specific than that (but don't have kids). Daily Life covers pretty much everything else, and is purely in chrono order at the moment. If I get to the point where I've got enough pages on a specific topic to justify separating out into its own album I might do that, like pages about my cats perhaps.
Holidays aren't really a big thing here and with no kids there aren't a great deal of photos. They end up either mixed in with Daily Life or Family depending on the specific page.
I have one more album category which I don't ever expect to be very big which is layouts about things which are very personal to me, and I don't necessarily want anyone leafing through my albums to see so they're kept separate. It's kind of a Me album but specifically the more reflective/intimate stuff.

I really like your approach/categories jennyap. Up til now I've just done separate albums for big vacations and a couple of years of PL but have been struggling with how to organise layouts from short holidays, pics of my niece, random daily events etc. I think a few key categories is definitely the way to go, and chronological within that.

I don't necessarily scrapbook chronologically but with a few exceptions - I organise my albums chronologically. This is me too. Each of my kids has a school album and an album all about them (which mainly holds their birthdays, halloweens, some family photos when I can get them all in a pic with their cousins, etc.) I do a modified December Daily, in an 8x8 each year. Well, for the past two years, and I plan on it again this year. And then everything else goes in my album(s). I use 3-ring albums and put the layouts in chronologically, but I don't scrap the layouts chronologically. I would organize the layouts however makes you happy.

I have an album called file 13. Its for things like you described, exactly. When it gets full, maybe it will be more clear what you should do. I rearrange layouts between albums all the time as I get different ideas about what to do with them.

I am way too left brained to even comprehend what you are saying. I did skip nine years though so that I could have my son's high school books done for graduation. Now I am keeping up with new pictures and going back and doing the missing years… in order.

And I never finish anything, albums are incomplete, I'm just a mess!!

I don't scrap chronologically but I have an album for every year. Then I have separate albums for Disney, vacations, one for my daughters vocal performances and one of my scrappy excursions.

I don't always scrap in order, but I file my pages chronologically, and arrange the albums that way as well. I tend to remember things by WHEN they happened. I do this. I have separate albums for my heritage photos (one set of albums for each side of the family) where the photos are stored chronologically regardless of when I scrapped them. My vacation photos are automatically in their own albums, and I have a general album for all the daily type pages that I do in years where I don't do PL. Storing photos chronologically works for the way I think but having the separate albums for the various topics also fits with my need to not have everything in one big general album.

I have six different trips to Las Vegas with our boys when the youngest was 5 and on the last trip 15. I really enjoy that album.

What is this "organization" that you all speak of? I don't scrap chronologically, that would make my head explode. I have to work on whatever is speaking to me at the moment so I'm all over the place, and to have to go back and constantly rearrange pages to put them in order would drive me crazy (well, even crazier than I already am). I have layouts for DD in one album and a few themed albums for certain projects (our silver anniversary, Disney, etc.) and everything else just gets more or less lumped together. I date every page so I feel like it doesn't really matter if they're in order or not, that can be a job for someone else to worry about down the road if they want them organized that way. And to be really honest, I have a huge pile of finished pages that aren't even in albums. They're just stacked together in storage boxes!

I have a mix of themed albums, and then random layout albums. Vacations, school years, dance teams, etc get their own dedicated albums. But stuff like daily life items are just in books together. There may be a dog layout, then a layout of DD driving, then fishing, then DS working. Just a mix. The only dedicated albums for my kids is their school albums, dance, sport season, and birthdays. Only because stuff like dance team was a 40-50 page album for the 10 month season. And I like to see their birthdays in one book to see how much they've grown

Thanks so much for your input ladies! It's really helping me figure out how I really wanna have my albums organized and it's great to see how everyone else does them and the train of thought behind them! Off to sort layouts!!

I have nothing to offer. I organize by theme and then chronologically. I get seriously stressed when pages cant fit together in a chronological way. In my England album I had to place pages together in a way that did not flow chronologically and to anyone else it looks great. To me I see, "yeah, but this happened before this even though these pages go together."

For example, the road trip to, the hotel, the morning getting to Disney and then the rides in order that we rode them, lunch... etc, etc! It's weird that I'm crazy about this kinda stuff being chronological but not about my regular albums!!

I definitely don't scrap chronologically but I like my layouts stored that way in each album.
So basically when I am all said and done I use the following categories for my albums. Christmas, Halloween (the only two albums that get their own albums) Each of my kids also have birthday and school albums, travel, and anything else that doesn't fit goes into an annual family album.
On top of that, my kids each have two personal albums (one 12x12 and one 8 1/2 x 11) that contain layouts just for them of more stories I wanted to share with them of everyday life. In 2013, I also started doing a Summer only PL album since we were doing so many fun things and I wanted an overall picture of that.
Personally I have two or three albums where I put all about me layouts or my own personal stories.

I'm hoping to get this done and leave it like this for good! That's the beauty of scrapbooking...it's not a one size fits all. Apparently you have more patience than I. I could never rearrange my albums multiple times. I was so involved with the project for 2 weeks that I couldn't actually scrapbook and that drove me nuts.

I tried doing it this way, and I overthought too much as well! I took them out of all of their albums and organized everything chronologically. Now my family albums are a review of the years events and very basic. I DO like to do themed pages. I have separate albums for Christmas, Easter, birthdays, Halloween, etc.. I like to put more time into these pages with embellishments and more techniques. like to put them out during the seasons or a kids birthday. I think I have given up on scrapping each kids an album. I almost did 2 of my kids ages 0-4 with the intention of a simple school album when they started school. Didn't happen. We rarely travel, but I do have an album for small trips. I don't know if I'm being helpful since you don't want to organize chronologically! I certainly don't scrap that way. I put photos to be scrapped in page protectors in the binders by years. So there's pages finished and some not when you look through my albums. Same thing for the themed albums.

I have a layout on one side and nothing on the other side because I didn't organize quite right in chronological order. Some day, I'll fix those.
