Looking to get a grill. Any recommendations? Small family so nothing large needed. May just be me using it at times. Anyone use electric?
Andddd.....have to be honest. The gas grill scares me a bit. So maybe charcoal or electric is the way to go?

We have gas for two reasons. 1. It's just 2 of us (often just me), and gas is quick and finished with quickly. I don't need the hassle of beginning charcoal so far in advance of when I want to cook, and having to be sure it is fully extinguished. 2. We live in an apartment and grill on the balcony, so gas is a lot kinder to our neighbors than charcoal.
Why does gas scare you? I've lived with them most of my life and never had an issue. Maybe we use a different gas in Australia and Germany than you do?

Charcoal tastes better, but gas is quicker and easier. Electric, you may as well just use your stove, in my opinion.

I like the convenience of gas but flavor of meat cooked over smoke chip coals.

Gas grill except for the fact you have to take those gas containers back and get a new one when it runs out unlike charcoal where you can un to the corner store and grab a bag.
Gas you just fire it up and it's ready.

We just purchased a new charcoal grill yesterday after using gas the past 5 years. While the gas is more convenient, the food never tasted as good to me as it does when cooked on charcoal. I also didn't like the maintenance required with a gas grill.

We prefer gas for the convenience. It takes minutes to heat up and it's convenient. I would never grill of I had to prep the coals, light the coals, wait for the coals to be ready... We grill several times a week and I like the convenience.
We actually have two gas tanks, so we can swap one out for the other when the gas runs out.
We bought a new one at Lowe's a few weeks ago. I've found that they need to be replaced every 5 years or so because the brackets inside rust out. The cast aluminum ones don't rust, but they are closer to $1,000. We paid about $150 for this one and it's a medium size. I just light two burners when it's just our family, but it's large enough if we have company.

I do think food tastes better on a charcoal grill, but if we had one we wouldn't grill nearly as often. It's just a pain to have to deal with the charcoal before and after grilling.

We went to propane gas years ago. Easy and clean.
When we went to my brother's for a Memoral Day bbq, he used a little charcoal grill. We'd forgotten how much we like the taste and went out and bought a grill/smoker. Loooove having both.
Quick meal that is basically done outside instead of in? Propane.
Time to let coals become ready and get that amazing grilled flavor? Charcoal.
You could get a small one of each!

My gas grill is plumbed to use natural gas. No propane tank to worry about. If you can swing that, IME, it's the easiest option. It cost $150 to have a gas line run to the patio, which paid for itself in about a year of not having to buy propane tanks.
But my husband bought a wood-pellet grill last year and I have to say that the food he cooks on it tastes better than any other grilled food, gas or charcoal. It's part smoker and part grill and the food is really delicious. You can cook anything on it.

We have a gas grill because we cook outside a few times a week. It's just easier and less mess than a charcoal grill.

I must have had an old gas grill way back. Had to turn on gas then use actual lighter. Is that still the case? Was always told to stand way back when lighting it.

Charcoal all the way. (Walmart has the classic Weber 22" on sale for something like $68-69 right now; can't beat that with a stick.) We use a chimney to get the coals going fast. My sister has a gas grill, and when we visit her, we grill for her on that, but we soak wood chips so the food will have *some* flavor. We really prefer charcoal, though.

No, they have a button you push that ignites the burners. 1/2 the time that button breaks, though, and you still have to use an actual lighter.

I'm terrified of our propane grill ... I would also be afraid of a charcoal grill ... If I didn't have dh to do the grilling there would just be no grilling going on in my house My mum does have one of those big George Forman electric grills and she likes it so that is an option

Gas. We had charcoal and didn't use it that much because it was a PITA to get going and the temp right. Sometimes we just wanted to get dinner made, not turn it into a social event. Love the gas, and I'm a scared cat. Once you use it, you realize it is quite safe.

Charcoal tastes better, but gas is quicker and easier. Electric, you may as well just use your stove, in my opinion. I don't think this is fair. I have an electric grill because my complex doesn't allow anything else. It definitely isn't like a regular grill, but it does wayyyyyy more than a stove. Don't knock something unless you've had ample experience using it. I love my electric grill and I'm glad it's an option.

DH changes the propane tanks for me though.

Gas because it's so much quicker and easier vs charcoal.

I might be a bit of a pyro, but I enjoy starting my charcoal fire, maybe a wee bit too much But anyway, the flavor is so much better and that is what is most important to me. Worth a little extra work.

We've also had a Weber Genesis for 14 years, also. My DH has replace the grates once, and new bricks once, I think. It is on our deck year round. Still looks and cooks great. One of the best features is that you can cook indirectly on it. Put a chicken, or roast on and just let it go til done.

When we lived in the US we bought a Weber Performer. It's a charcoal grill that has a gas ignition. You just pile on the charcoal, turn on the gas and push a button to ignite. Turn the gas off after a few minutes. No hassle, no mess, charcoal grilling. Best money we ever spent, and I can only recommend it!
