We have zero Pokemon education so even the explanations we've read don't make sense because the use Pokemon language. I know it's an app. I've seen headlines about people going places and other about havoc being caused. Is it sort of like Pokemon geocaching?

Yes that's a good way to describe it.... the GPS maps out n gives a distance of which ones are closest to you... as soon as 1 is in ur radius it appears on ur phone screen.. you throw ur poke ball to catch it... then you start ur collection... im pretty sure the goal is to "catch them all" but i dont know why... lol..
Is there a real legit reason???

"Gotta catch 'em all" is the slogan of the first pokemon series. it is not like geocaching, it is like ingress. you don't get coordinates and you don't have to "search" for something or solve any puzzles. It is just collecting pokemons outside, evolve them, walking outside (no driving) and fight in gyms against other pokemon trainers. I really like it! Give it a try! a good article about it: popcultureuncovered.com/2016/07/10/pokemon-go-you-hoodwinked-us/

My 22 year old DS was home for the weekend, and HE asked ME to go for a walk after dinner because -- you guessed it -- he wanted to find Pokémon! He was nuts about everything Pokémon when he was little, and he was like a little kid when we were walking last night! I love the fact that this app/game is getting kids outside to walk -- though I haven't heard the stories of havoc. In any case, everyone has to start with Pokémon somewhere, so even if your DS doesn't know all of the Pokémon characters and lingo yet, he will catch on quickly!

UGh this thread makes no sense. you mean someone goes around your town and places balls and your app picks up the cooridinates?

UGh this thread makes no sense. you mean someone goes around your town and places balls and your app picks up the cooridinates? Not really. There are no actual balls. The balls are just on the screen. It's a game. You open it up and your avatar is standing on a map of wherever you are IRL. To make your avatar move you have to physically move. As you move your avatar moves on the map on the screen. As your avatar moves he encounters Pokemon. When he encounters a Pokemon you can try to catch it with a pokeball. While you are throwing the pokeballs your screen changes from the map to your camera so what you see on your phone screen is the Pokemon wherever you are IRL. Once you catch the Pokemon you can train them and evolve them (enhance their powers).

I find it completely ridiculous, but my lazy 16-year-old walked over 3 miles willingly this weekend, and wanted to go looking for more. I usually can't motivate her to leave the couch. So I downloaded it, and I'm playing as well to compete with her, because if it gets my kid moving, I'll suffer through it! Ah, the things we do for our kids!

I have been seeing this all over FB, online groups, my kids have been talking about it, but you are the first person to make any sense to me. My kids don't have iphones so they are out of luck. Thankfully they are old fashioned to some extent and are outdoors all day on the trampolines, playing ball, riding bikes and swimming. I am lazy but have no desire to be walking down the street staring at my screen. Save

I was just frustrated when I was riding my bike for about an hour and it had no impact on the egg. I though riding a bike would also count as I am still outside doing sth for my health. but ok, i'll just walk everywhere now

Video of people playing thisETA: this is what I was picturing in my mind. People walking around staring at a GPS map while they walked. ETA 2nd thing.. yes I know it's not accurate, yes I read the comments, yes I know there is a radius etc. Yes it sounds interesting but my method of "Hey kids go outside and do something" still seems to work for me. Even for my teen who is now gone fishing for the afternoon.

Hmph. I brought my 15yo to the mall today and it's filled with people (much more so that usual) walking around staring at their phones. DD said the mall is a gym plus there are tons of pokemons around.

My friend said - Hey, if this is one way to get out and get a fitness plan, bring on Pokemon!

Costco was a gold mine of Pokemon today, as was the drive to and from dd's physical therapy. However, I wish I'd thought to have dd use my phone also to catch some of them, because now she's ahead of me.

So I broke down and put this on my phone for my daughter to try. First pokemon was in our living room. Great. Next pokeman was "too far away" according to the app. Sounds great for metro or more heavily populated areas, but the farming rural areas not so much. Glad it was free.

We took a walk and found 3. We used incense to attract them. We are about 10 minutes from town so I wasn't sure how much we'd find.

I was so excited when I heard about this. What a great way to get people moving - and FUN. Unfortunately, my phone is too old and crappy to download the app and I'm cheap so I'm not getting a new phone just for this app. Very cool, though.

My ds has been playing it since it started & he put it on my phone today You have to do a whole bunch of stuff to get it - you need a US iTunes account and get it through that. It was too much work for DD to bother....
