right now my DH and I are thinking about giving up our mini van for a Smaller car. We have 3 kids, but one is leaving for college and has his own nice car that he just bought and another will be driving in about a 1yr. For the most part it is just me and the 2 kids going places in town, Sometimes DH in the car and on a rare occasion, all 5 of us will go to dinner together. I would love to save some $$ on gas, that would be great, BUT I am worried about the space I am giving up..... We do haul extra kids sometimes ( not that often though). We do take road trips for vacation, but thought if we were going someplace we could not fly, we would just rent a van. Our main purpose of doing this would be the savings on gas. there is nothing wrong with the van.
Anyone else go through this? Did you wish you had the space back? Do you feel like you save $$ on gas with the smaller car vs a mini van?

I did ditch the minivan last year, but I went with a small SUV (crossover). I don't like being as low as you are in a car. The gas savings are great though. I was getting ~16 mpg with my minivan, and I'm getting close to 30 mpg now. I have less seats, but I don't miss the trunk space - I rarely used floor to ceiling.

I went from a minivan to a Honda CRV - I didn't want to be low down either and I wanted space to carry my scrap stuff when I went to a crop. I get between 24 and 27 mpg depending on how much highway driving I do.

I went from a Toyota Sienna to a Jeep grand cherokee. I do miss the cargo space. Even at the grocery store. Ugg.
And we went on vacation and I couldn't pack like I normally would. Ugg.
So much so that dh is considering ditching his truck and getting a mini van LOL. I'm not driving it but won't mind the room on vaca!

I went from a minivan to a Malibu. It feels very small and cozy, and low to the ground. Visibility (my looking out) is not as good. The visibility might be because the newer cars have thicker 'supports' between the windows for safety reasons. That's what the sales person told me...
I miss the space a little, but not a great deal. Yes, mileage is better.

i don't know if you consider a fusion "small", but it's certainly smaller than the windstar we gave up for it. things i miss most: tons of room for buying/transporting large purchases. we go junking often, and now i don't have the luxury of knowing pretty much anything i find will fit in the back of the van. we're about to leave on vacation, and 4 large suitcases is going to be a stretch to fit in the trunk, too. and going to the drive-in movies, now we won't be able to raise the hatch and camp out like we used too. things i don't miss: gas mileage and the fact that i was driving a minivan. our boys are 9 and 6, and they fit fine in it. the led room for adults is fine too, i think if we had a smaller sedan tho that would be an issue.

My Honda Odyssey blew it's transmission on 7/3; it wasn't worth repairing since the van was just shy of 250k miles. I bought a used 2012 Accord that is almost identical to the one DH drives. I like it, it drives great, and it gets great gas mileage, but I miss my van. We have no other large vehicle, so I will have to rent something when i make my trips to Home Depot or for Rabbit compost. I wish I could have justified fixing it, but I knew that there were to many things that could go wrong soon to justify the $4k the repair would have cost.

I went from a Ford Windstar to a Kia Sorento. We too have 3 kids, one in college. Although she lives at home and does/goes with us everywhere. There is NO room, and if we were to win the lottery I would ditch this thing and get another van. If we took a vacation in this thing we would have to rent a thing for the top and put the luggage in there. I have to fold down a seat to put in the groceries. Totally wish I had not done it. Also just an add, the Kia is supposed to seat 7 (2 in the very back) my youngest(9) cannot get out of the very back seat by himself. He isn't strong enough to get the middle seat to move out of the way and climb out without almost breaking his neck. Good luck with your decision. Cynthia

Don't do it! We had to ditch my '02 Odyssey due to transmission issues and I seriously cried getting rid of it. It's been over a year and I still miss the old girl. I only have two kids, but I loved the cargo capacity or that I could tote extra kids when needed.
DD had a bonfire for her birthday at the beach and we had to take two cars to fit everything we had to take (tables, wood, ice chest, etc.). I got a used PT Cruiser (rushed decision) to replace the van and I hate it! You have to make sure to clear things out before heading to the grocery store and even then the cargo space is small! The gas mileage is comparable to a van I think which is surprising since it's not that big of a car.
DH has an '07 Prius so luckily we both agreed to rent a car for vacation. Even with a bigger trunk, we barely had room for all our stuff.
Renting a van for a week is about $700. We opted for a sedan instead. If I had a chance to get another van, I would do it in a heartbeat!
My kids are teens now (17-driving, we share a car, and 14) but I still would love another van.

Sharla-do you know something about them or is it just that it's obvious that going from a van to cruiser is not a good idea?

We would be going from a Newer Sienna SE to a Prius V. I am not super worried about being low to the ground. the SE sits about as low as mini vans come. ( a lot lower than my old mini van did) the low profile tires help with that. the Prius V seems to sit up a bit higher than some other cars, it does sit higher than my DH's accord. I have looked at the cargo space in both. they have the same cargo space if you leave all of the seats in the sienna up. I am worried about the space I will be missing with the seats down, Like someone else mentioned when you go junking. We do have a truck so if I KNOW that I need the space for something big, then I can take the truck, But, It is really nice not having to worry about the space, I know I have room. lol. I feel like this is a life decision. hahaha.

I just am being a smart alec. My mom had a PT and I didn't like it. I didn't like the way the inside was arranged. It felt like no place to put anything, and the seating was uncomfortable.
I don't usually have strong reactions about cars, but did about the PT.

I agree Sharla. I found out after the fact that they were made to be fleet vehicles. Makes sense since everything on it seems cheap. 14 yo DS told me not to buy it. I should've listened. I might give it to DD and get me something else.
My FIL said he rented one and they are fun to drive...umm no, since you about get killed sometimes with its horrible turning radius. It does have cute body styling though.

We went to the dealer and they are giving us a REALLY great price on the trade in. that is another reason, if we were going to be upside down or they told us the current van was not worth much, then we would not even be looking into this.......

We went from a Sienna to a Kia Soul. We have no kids at home now. I have enjoyed going to something smaller. The gas mileage is great! We drove the Sienna for 14 years and had 277,000 miles on it.
I do miss having room for hauling things, but otherwise love my smaller ride!

I went from a Grand Caravan to a Caliber. That was about 5 years ago. I still miss my minivan! Not just the extra room, but I liked sitting higher up. Made me feel safer, especially in Michigan winters. Pam

My 2004 Odyssey gets about 15 mpg and my weekly gas was killing me. We went looking for a hybrid and the winner was the Lexus 300h. I wanted something prius sized but the Lexus won out on leg room. I have 3 kids at home but the 18 year old has his own car. We were lucky that the transmission on our Odyssey blew at 75k miles and was under the extended warranty. We still have it to haul our toys to and from the beach and as an extra car. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk

I went from a Honda Odyssey to a Honda Civic due to transmission issues on the Odyssey. I was really sad about it because I'd had the van for 10 years and was hoping to at least get through the last year of having a kid at elementary school (with all those carpools) before getting something more fuel efficient. The hardest thing to get used to was riding so low to the ground. Hate it. The front seats are ok, but I miss the center console and I'm pretty sure my teenage boys (2) still aren't thrilled with the backseat when we go somewhere together. It does make carpools more of a pain, because I can't take whoever needs a ride, I have to count heads in advance now. The trunk is adequate (we got a hybrid, so the trunk is smaller than a regular car as well). I can make everything fit on a grocery run (even with a bin for jumper cables, etc.), but for a Costco run, I end up using the back seat for the paper towels/tp/etc. I do love the gas milage (went from 17 to 41-ish) so there is that.

I do not feel as safe in my small car as I do in a minivan. And love all the space in a minivan. I think we will always have a minivan. Ours has been a workhorse and the ride cannot be matched.

We went from a minivan to a Nissan Murano, but that was after the youngest graduated from highschool.
I love the Murano. It's not the big bulky van, but it is still a larger car and we do have plenty of room. But it's just the two of us and the dog. Next time, I would like to go down another size and go with a Nissan Rogue.

I just got rid of my van for a small SUV, so I can't speak to that yet, but I can tell you that for the past month all we have had for four of us is our Honda Fit. We went to Costco in that bad boy and it worked. They have unbelievable cargo space in them. It's weird. But the back seat is even comfy for adults, and just this afternoon I folded the seat down and picked up my kid and her bike with a flat tire. She has a 26" bike without the ability to remove the front tire, and we still got it in the car with little effort. Any way. We get about 40mpg and I use it mainly for my commute but it's been a fantastic car.
My only complaint is that the car takes too long to cool off IMO (but we live in the desert) and my kids often complain about it, so I try to park in shade (hard to come by) when I can.

Mine blew at less than 60K in 2008 (my 2003) and then again 3 weeks ago. And another mom at the school was telling me that they had replaced theirs twice in their '03 odyssey as well. Holy smokes. That's just not a good thing. Last time I looked into it the '02 was the last recall for that, and they made us pay for our first one. It made sense to drop a few thousand then on a paid for vehicle with low miles, but this time around it would have been so dumb.

about 15 years ago we went from a dodge caravan to a dodge neon. I loved (still own) that little car. 35mpg and we call it the dodge neon 4x4. We'd load that car up with everything you could imagine. We even once brought home (45 miles) a 12 foot roll of carpet. LOL. I've never missed that old van much. I was just thinking today that the only thing I liked about it was the 3 rows of seats. We could take more people places but in reality we didn't do that much.

Raindancer-if you google Odyssey transmission issues, you will find many stories. It was a known Honda problem but they did not back up their product if you were out of the warranty coverage. So irritating. I loved my van but after it died in traffic with kids, that was it. (Had a rebuilt put in after original crapped out at 100,000 miles but it had to back 3 times for problems with that).
