The old photographs really got to me. They get tossed frames and all. If there is any identification on the photos at all I wish someone would upload it to Ancestry.com or something.

Wow! That's neat! Always blows my mind what some people throw away. Though, living in NY, it may be much more difficult to donate, I'm not sure. Thanks for sharing!

For some reason the pearls got to me. My mom gave me a strand of pearls when I was 18 and those pearls in the picture made me think of the story behind them.

I suspect people put stuff out with their trash but on top or separate so other people can use it. Don't garbage trucks smash things down?

I go to Estate Sales and it bothers me how many personal photos and portraits are for sale. Who else would want them?

I wonder if they have ever had anyone come in to appraise the items? I can only imagine that there are some treasures among the treasures.

I go to Estate Sales and it bothers me how many personal photos and portraits are for sale. Who else would want them? People do buy them. Some people sell them online. Others try to find different family members who might want them. Others still donate them to historical societies and such. And some people just enjoy collecting certain ones. they tend to collect a theme or time period. Save

I go to Estate Sales and it bothers me how many personal photos and portraits are for sale. Who else would want them? I used to collect them, especially the ones showing women's fashion, children, civil war era cartes des visites, and tin types. I sometimes teach a class on preserving old photos and identifying information from your own old photos. I used some of them in an exhibit on the history of photography. I especially love the wedding gowns in the bride photos.

I'm amazed at how much stuff is in that collection! It's cool and sad all at once for me. Cool to see that they have created and kept this display, but sad at the amount of waste we generate that is still able to be used by others.
I understand that for many reasons people cannot always find new owners for every last thing they wish to get rid of, but to see so much all together like that is really something that makes me think, I guess.
And I too wondered about the value of the items.

My cousin now heads waste management for Northern Virginia, but he started on a trash truck at age 18, tossing cans at 4 am onto the back of a truck. This was before trucks with machines that pick up the toters, and when you could put out bags and trash and a trash person had to pick them up and toss them onto the truck. One time he brought home a new Nintendo game system, controllers and games that some kid's parents tossed to punish him. Lots of stuff goes out when landlords are cleaning out houses and apartments that someone has died or left. The guy who collected this stuff in this collection may have gotten much of it back in the days of picking and tossing since he collected over many years.
There hasn't always been the trash to treasure mentality of the past decade or so, and the shows where absolute junk has value. For many people, if I don't want it, it's trash. They are on the other side of the coin of the people visited by American Pickers, lol!

Very neat. And yes, kind of sad too. My neighbor is a garbage man and he's found a few things that he's broght home. The best one was a nearly new Weber charcoal grill that is on a cart and it's awesome.

These had to have been collected many years ago. Now, most cities make it illegal for people to remove things from the trash. (I don't understand those laws, but..)

Wow, look at all that crap Am I the only cynic thinking: how much time did he waste picking thru other people's trash? I'm torn between cool, gross, and just plain weird.

My gut feeling is that these items weren't down in the middle of a bag, but somewhat obvious or visible. I've seen people have a yard sale, then just toss everything into open boxes and drag it to the curb with a "free" sign, so whatever is left by trash pickup day is there and open, kwim? Or when my in-laws' neighbors' kids cleaned out her house after she passed away. They just stacked the stuff on the curb. No bags or boxes. Save

I've seen this article many times before and it never ceases to amaze me the stuff that gets thrown out, especially stuff of personal or family nature. I know we can't keep everything that is ever made or purchased but it's sad to see some perfectly good stuff land in the dump.
