Please stop reading right now if annual school supply shopping vents annoy you... this thread may not be for you! I know there are people out there who love shopping for school supplies. (Rock on!) I am not one of them. I am in 3-ring binder hell... I have discovered that school supply shopping is slightly more tolerable on Amazon, while sipping a glass of chardonnay. Who else is with me? LOL! That's exactly how I want to do my Christmas shopping! I no longer have any children in school so not much help in that area. If you can find the stuff on Amazon and it's within budget, I'd say go for it. I'd take a glass of chardonnay over a hectic and disorganized school supply aisle any day.

Do NOT buy those ring binders as Staples with the rubberized edges on the spine. They are very difficult to get in and out of a stuffed backpack. While they hold up really well, my DD's both hate them.

MerryMom, I just read your post. You can't please everyone...BTDT... It sounds like some of the experiences I've had selling scrapbook supplies! Well, at least you tried. As I read your plan, it sounded great and super easy. So sorry that so many wrenches were thrown in the gears...that always seems to happen.
So when's the next sale?

My church is doing an event at a family shelter and we've been asked to bring school supplies which I didn't know what exactly to buy. I'd like to order from amazon because I have a cart pending $35 to ship, if someone could point me to something to buy that would be great thanks! I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend, but binders are the way to go if you want to help. People can find pencils, erasers, folders, notebooks, filler paper fairly cheap, but binders are the biggest expense. Some 1 1/2" and 2" binders would probably be welcome donations. If that isn't an option, Ticonderoga pencils are always nice to buy because they do last longer and don't break as easy as the cheap pencils. And lastly, highlighters are useful for older kids too. Hope some of that helps

So when's the next sale? Oh, we did it again the following year and sold about the same amount per grade (1/3 of the parents bought the packet). But the next PTO said it was "too much work". Again, it wasn't a fund-raiser, it was a service. It is just one of the 'PTO stories' that a group of other PTO and book fair ladies and a few gents tell when we meet up. Remember the time we had the garage sale and one of the boxes contained so many cockroaches?? Remember when I was hot glue gunning metal disks to the bottom of rubber duckies at 3 am for the duck pond at the carnival that started at 9 am because the "lady who never listens" failed to order the weighted rubber duckies when we explicitly told her to order the weighted rubber duckies, even gave her the item number... good times, good times. When I was in elementary school, back in the late 60's and early 70's, you bought a packet of supplies for your grade. No supplies bought at a store.

I love back to school shopping, but this year... Sigh. The allusive orange plastic 2 pocket folder no prongs has me a bit stressed. Apparently that is THE color this year. I've been to 8 stores. We have 3 more weeks and the grandmas are also in on the hunt. Her list was very specific this year so we didn't get to really make any fun choices so she got a new lunch box. Is orange popular for everyone? I found these on amazon is that what you're looking for?

My MIL lives in retirement land with all the big box office supplies. She also loves feeling useful. My DD is the rule following, must be exact type so while I say pick a yellow or red one she flips. Pick the battle and let granny feel good. We also have time. We went over the weekend due to tax free days or we probably wouldn't be looking yet. So I say "stressing" quite TIC, it's a folder for the love of God, not a kidney.

Staples has been running the 3 ring binder recycle ad. I made the teenager give up all her old nasty written on binders to get fresh new ones with a discount. Cool!

Emily - Sorry! Perhaps I should have used more smilies and not assumed my sarcasm was obvious. Mostly I'm just kidding. angievp - Maybe you should open a school supply personal shopper business. Can I just give you my lists and have you shop for me? misadventurous - I actually would love to head to Staples for the binders. I think their store brand (with the rubber reinforced spine) holds up better than even the heavy duty Avery binders. They are expensive though - would probably run about $61 just for the binders on my list above. It was nice to get the divider tabs, pens, pencils, highlighters, post-it notes, spiral notebooks, graph paper, calculator, and "Red Scarf Girl" novel taken care of at Amazon tonight though. twisted scissors - that is a long time! My order is supposed to be here Wednesday. School starts Thursday. We'll see how it goes. OMG that would be awesome!!! Although I DO NOT buy generic school supplies, so it'll cost ya!

Your list looks like binder hell to me!! I can never seem to find the right width binders in the colors the teacher wants. And decent binders are expensive!!

Thank you for looking! I found one this morning in a Staples two counties up! I had to pick up a rug and the store was next to a Staples. They had lots of orange but no blue. I'm guessing we are the orange district and that's the blue folder district! Makes me think of the behind the scene marketing analysis. LOL! I imagine some marketing intern computing orange folders per capita vs. red or yellow. Or how many school colors in this district are yellow and green and what about that one county that is all brown and orange. Or binders and the back to school production run that started in March with a focus on one inch only to be foiled by an increase in 3" requests. (Maybe I just need more sleep...)

FYI, if you are a COSTCO or Sam's Club member, they have (at least in Maryland) the 3" binders, if you really need them. One of the things about NOT being in college or taking classes, we do not need them anymore.
Also DO CHECK some of the thrift store places. I offered on freecycle first several newly new binders (from college classes) the one that did not find a home that way I donated to a thrift shop. I was in one the other day and they had a large section of school and office supplies, most were still in the original packaging UNOPENED!
