I'm watching the USAvsSweden womens soccer now and it's been GREAT!! It's on one of the cable channels! Dh's family is from Sweden so we always root for Sweden too so we don't care who wins this game! My Fijian cousin is posting stuff like crazy this morning.. it's kinda funny! They are just giddy! And my step dad is from Holland so we cheer for them too! It sounds like they closed the Dive pool again this morning ESPN posted the artical about it OlympicDivePool Green

I still can't find it, @dottyscrapper . Can you click on the video and find then copy the URL for it here? I tried that but it defaults to the general page. I don't know how to put a video directly on here. I'll see if I can find it somewhere else. link

Gabby confirmed my determination to never be videoed chewing gum. It's just not a good look. I have zero issue with the hand over the heart kerfuffle - but she did look like a poor sport when the other teammates stood up to clap Aly and Simone and she stayed seated - or perhaps team player would be more accurate.
I totally felt for Lochte. I wanted him to at least medal. The 100 free was by far the best final of the Olympics - that was a crazy race!

Dressage on the NBC Sports App ... lucky enough to watch at work. To think it all came down to Valegro stutter stepping and it changed medal outcome.
Back in the day before child, I was lucky enough to have a horse. Now I'm older and fatter so I just watch equestrian events and realize how sucky a rider I was !
Michael Phelps - phenom. Hoping he goes into coaching - he needs to share how to do what he does along with handling pressure of everyone having an opinion of what you do and how you do it.
Chinese ladies gymnastics - those children are NOT the minimum age, or even close to it.
Tim Daggett is a lousy judge LOL He always says "oh that won't be more than a .30 deduction" - and boom, they lose 1.6!! Rowdy Gaines must be friends with the soccer "goal" guy! Gabby Douglas looked bored to be there last night ... not her best shining moment and SO agree about the gum!
And yes, we'd love to see other countries participate. We seem to see more of our athletes getting congratulated or taking wraps off or yet another pile of commercials that NBC puts in every 3 minutes.

Michael Phelps has said that what he wants to do most is work with children coaching them. Watching BBC, I have missed all of the shots of Gabby Douglas sulking and all the misleading scoring by commentators. I instead watched gymnast after gymnast from all the different countries without commercials and scoring guesstimates by a commentator that were dead on accurate. And this is why NBC sucks so desperately.

Chinese ladies gymnastics - those children are NOT the minimum age, or even close to it. There was one in particular that I started paying a LOT of attention to. She's the one who rotated with the Americans in the individual all-around. Different camera angles helped to show that she may actually be older than she appears. Apparently, she's been on the scene for some time so I had to guess that her age had been settled before this competition. Although I do know that in previous Olympics, the only way to prove some of these young girls' ages were from the state records. If they fake their records, what can you do?

We don't have cable tv, and picking up stations over the air is next to impossible due to our location. So our Olympics coverage is coming courtesy of Canada, as we are able to stream it online. Can't say I mind that one bit. DH is Canadian and I love the country for many reasons, so it's just fine with me. Consequently we are getting some different coverage.
I watched some Rugby 7's; wow, what a fast game! And I'm really happy for Fiji!

Funny, I read an article only a few days ago about the Nigerian U17s soccer team, 26 of the squad failed an age test following a mandatory MRI scan of their wrist plates. I have no medical background so can't explain the science. This test was used to discover if they were older than they said perhaps it can be used the other way too. www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/36990537/nigerias-under-17-squad-wiped-out-as-half-are-older-than-17

I'll have to check it out. This one Chinese girl I mentioned is shorter than Simone Biles by a good several inches and she has a very baby face. Simone is 4'9". The shape of the Chinese girl's face reminds me of some Vietnamese girls whose faces are slower to show age and who are the smallest kids I've ever been around, so every time she was on, I kept going back and forth. She's not old enough.... she might be old enough.... she's not old enough.... she might be old enough. Whatever her age, she is going to be an extremely small adult. I know the gymnast you mean - and I'd bet she's definitely not min. age. While I would hope that the others are legit, most of them have no international exposure and that clouds the issue. China was stripped of their bronze medal in 2000 for lying about ages, and in 2008 there were more rumors. Their internal pressure is to win and only win. I believe they said last night that they want bonuses refunded from the coaches that received them.
Watching our women gymnasts you realize how much Bela & Marta Karolyi have contributed to the way gymnasts train and work. What an incredible legacy to leave behind.

My brother was a Peace Corp volunteer in Fiji in the early-mid 80s. I visited him a couple times and fell in love with Fiji and her people. I totally cried when Fiji won. So very, very happy for my friends. Bula vinaka!

I looked up the Chinese gymnast that was in the All-Around finals. She is 20 years old! If they were going to lie about her age, why make her so old? And I read she comes from an improvished family and has health issues, so that may be why she is so small in stature. Hard to tell with the makeup she had on too.

She was so incredibly tiny that I wondered how she could even have the reach on the uneven bars. She must have to work twice as hard to do what a heavier opponent is able to do...I did all kinds of mental contortions that I think might be a physics thing about speed and weight and ... it made my head hurt, but in the end, I just wondered how she was able to do a thing on the vault. (on a side note, speaking of physics and gravity, I swear Simone Biles just kind of hung in the air when she was flipping around on her floor exercise.)

I homeschooled my kids for a while, and we studied the Olympics. We tried to follow one of the Chinese superstar women gymnasts, but we had terrible coverage on TV. I was able to learn a lot about these girls and how they leave their families at incredibly young ages to be raised in these.... gymnasiums. They may only see their parents a few days a year. (At least that's the way it was last time I checked into it.) Remember, in China, when you're one in a million, there are a thousand more just like you. (on a side note, speaking of physics and gravity, I swear Simone Biles just kind of hung in the air when she was flipping around on her floor exercise.) She is barely taller than the vault! I'm watching on a live feed and it keeps pausing for a second and then picking up right where it stopped. It was a lot of fun watching these new hover maneuvers the gymnasts suddenly incorporated into their vaults. Not to mention how magically these hovers disappeared during the reruns. I was teasing that these were HarryPotteresque moves. You could just imagine someone from Hogwarts sitting in the stands with their wand out.

I got annoyed when the lady was interviewing the very sweet Nathan Adrian, who just won a bronze medal swimming, asked "what happened". He looked happy not disappointed. Uh, he just won an olympic medal --really? Was she implying if it's not gold something is wrong? He handled it very well.

I've only heard good things about their coverage over the last several Olympics. the growth plate test might be able to prove that someone is older than they are claiming but it would be easy to get past someone younger than they are claiming to be. People age at different rates and the growth plates close at different times. My 14 year old son has the growth plates of an average 11 year old. He just reach 5' in height six months ago. It would be very easy for China to just say that their gymnasts are slow growing. I agree with you though. They look very, very young for their ages. All of them do. They have been caught more than once trying to pass girls off as old enough to compete. At least now it's biting them in the butt. They have never gotten over how the sport changed when the minimum age changed. The change from 12 to 15 made a huge difference in the sport and what "good gymnastics" looks like. The older girls have more strength and power than the younger girls. China has not adjusted to that change and it's showing in their scores.

Many high-level gymansts (and you see this in divers, too, but to a lesser extent) stay tiny and look far younger than their age. Partly this is because their intense training regimen is not allowing them to experience normal puberty. This is particularly true for the Chinese, who more or less torture their high-level atheletes starting at a very young age.
It will be interesting to see if Simone Biles grows once she stops competing; I'm betting she does.
My own daughter went through two separate puberty growth and change spurts. The first was when her periods started at age 13. However none of the other changes occurred at that time, and she looked like a little girl all through her teens. At 19 she finally grew hips, filled out in her thighs, and put on some weight. She still looks younger than she is, but at least now clearly looks post-pubertal.

I wish we had better channels. We have USA and some other channel during part of the day and it's been basketball, a little archery and then at night (from 8-midnight) we have to depend on NBC and the gymnastics have been on so late after 10 according to my 9 year old waking me up to complain about it (I didn't know she was still downstairs watching TV at 10pm, oops) that we would need to record them to watch the next day (I should probably just do that). I enjoy me some water polo and rugby when it's actually on a channel we get. Darn west coast time zone...
