As far as NBC coverage though, primetime I will agree I am having a hard time staying awake for, there are a lot of things shown during the day, I was able to see a little trampoline which was amazing and wished they showed more different things like that.

iamkristinl16, I don't think that prime time needs to be 50% filled with swimming preliminary trials for starters. They state they'll be showing x, y, and z and end up just showing x until something like 10:45 at night, which to me and most people I know doesn't count as prime time. I don't understand how they've done the gymnastics coverage, when I know gym is one of the biggest draws. I figured they wrote off the men because they didn't medal (which I'm not personally cool with but can perhaps understand from the financial angle), but then to divide even the women's into two pieces that were hours apart was idiotic. I have more thoughts, but am being harrassed to get ready for DD's softball tryouts. Time for our own "Olympics," lol.

Dressage on the NBC Sports App ... lucky enough to watch at work. To think it all came down to Valegro stutter stepping and it changed medal outcome. Back in the day before child, I was lucky enough to have a horse. Now I'm older and fatter so I just watch equestrian events and realize how sucky a rider I was ! Michael Phelps - phenom. Hoping he goes into coaching - he needs to share how to do what he does along with handling pressure of everyone having an opinion of what you do and how you do it. Chinese ladies gymnastics - those children are NOT the minimum age, or even close to it. Tim Daggett is a lousy judge LOL He always says "oh that won't be more than a .30 deduction" - and boom, they lose 1.6!! Rowdy Gaines must be friends with the soccer "goal" guy! Gabby Douglas looked bored to be there last night ... not her best shining moment and SO agree about the gum! And yes, we'd love to see other countries participate. We seem to see more of our athletes getting congratulated or taking wraps off or yet another pile of commercials that NBC puts in every 3 minutes. Michael Phelps has said that what he wants to do most is work with children coaching them. Watching BBC, I have missed all of the shots of Gabby Douglas sulking and all the misleading scoring by commentators. I instead watched gymnast after gymnast from all the different countries without commercials and scoring guesstimates by a commentator that were dead on accurate. And this is why NBC sucks so desperately. Was it a bbc commentator or Canadian that totally mixed phelps and Lochte up during a race?

I assume they split it up to keep viewers from both sports watching for most of the night. The preliminaries pump people up for the medal race, and show what the swimmers had done. If phelps (or any other swimmer who people expected to do well) had not made it to finals, people would probably want to know what happened in the preliminaries, just as they want to see when they do well. For many of those swimmers, they don't get past the preliminaries so would never be shown on tv if they only showed the medal race.

I think their names might be Adam Moorhouse & Andy Jameson, FWIW. They're both former British Olympic swimmers and have a good enough rapport that they could be on morning radio in the states. Instead of mixing up the swimmers, they know who has the fastest time for the year, who has the world record, who has the Olympic record, etc. The men's 100m Butterfly and award ceremony was an absolute joy to watch listening to them because it was the best of the best tying for silver with a younger kid from Singapore (that Phelps is friendly with) taking the gold. It was an Olympic race in every sense of the word and these guys allowed you to appreciate it more than you would if you didn't keep up with the world of swimming more than every 4 years. Really good stuff.

He mixed the lanes up which is probably quite easy to do under pressure and "excitment" together with the fact that they're also some distance from the pool. These swimmers swim so darn fast that there's no chance of actually recognizing any of them.

How about this? Michael Phelps and Joseph Schooling. There's a lovely article in the Telegraph live over here about both of them. Phelps has truly been a world wide inspiration to many a young swimmer. He was very gracious too in defeat when he realized he was in the silver position. It will be kind of strange not to see him in that pool in future. He's certainly one heck of an athlete. LINK

iamkristinl16 - Katinka Hosszú from Hungary broke the 400m IM World Record by nearly 2 seconds to win Gold, beating 2nd place by nearly 5 seconds. NBC commentator Dan Hicks credited her husband/coach as "the man responsible" for her achievement. After heavy criticism, Hicks doubled-down by saying It's not exactly like having a good coach is something unusual among Olympic athletes. You'd think they'd have figured out how to mention them without giving them credit for a world record shattering gold medal performance!

He apologized immediately when he realized he had the wrong lane. Felt horribly for him. He got roasted over it on social media and it was not done maliciously.

I'm very annoyed by the gymnastics coverage on prime time evening hours...,they're only focused on the US (which I definitely want to see) but I would also like to see top competitors from the other countries and they show so little of that, it's been disappointing. That has always annoyed me as well, but on the other hand I am coming to believe it is simply human nature. I am here in Brazil and the tv is spending 90% of the time focused on Brazilian competitors.

People make mistakes - but I think the idea that you can't recognize these swimmers during the 200 IM is incorrect. I'd give a total pass during the 50 free as it's a true whirlwind - but the fly strokes are different enough that it's really not difficult to tell them apart in the pool.

I've been off work all week, so I have watched A LOT of the Olympic Games. Mostly on NBC... And I have really enjoyed it. I've seen a little bit of almost everything. Weight lifting, gymnastics, swimming, fencing, trampoline, rowing, track, volleyball... Even table tennis (those people are insane, btw). I won't have the same luxury next week, at least for the few days I work, but this week has been a lot of fun! My observation... I want legs like Kerri Walsh. I haven't been off work this week, but have taped a many hours of coverage. I've also watched a lot of different events. Just finished mens road cycling and now watching whitewater. Table tennis is so intense Fencing was interesting too. I also watched some womens weightlifting, haven't gotten to the mens yet. I've been using my Olympic tv time to get my dog on his grooming table. He's looking pretty good with all this combing

I don't understand the continued green water diving pool problem. I realize that they said they ran out of the needed chemicals, but can't they bring in more of whatever is needed? Or is it just too far gone to bring it back to clear?
ETA: I just saw on my news feed that they are draining the diving well water tonight and refilling it so that the diving finals will have fresh pool water for tomorrow afternoon's event.

Rafael Nadal is disgusting. He howks at his bum before every shot - I wish someone would buy him a pair of pants that don't give him a wedgie. He also just gobbed out a big bit of spit beside the court. I can't bear to watch him.
